Also received this email about the end of this walking project. In the beginning of Burningman it was really worth to walk some extra because the payment was worth it. The last few weeks the payment became lower and lower sadly enough. I understand that they could not keep this project working this way, the rate of each step you walked was already zero at the moment. Maybe you can try it again with some visible adds the idea about this project was great.

Was a nice app, on lasts months payments were too low, i suppose that developers didn't found sponsors to cover the cost of monthly payments.

The project was funded by the developers themselves. I asked the same question a while ago, here's there reply :

Bitwalking which I have never heard from them ever since I applied.

The idea is to run the app while GPS is active or at least need internet connection during the walk and they will take the computing power of your smart phone little by little it adds up to be a huge hash power when thousands of people install and run the app while has nothing to do with you walking.

The hashrate of your mobile phone wouldn't be enough to make even a little BTC. Also your battery would die soon if you start hashing on the phone.

So yes, android version is live since May.
