Never seen much talk about bitcoin's little brother. For me the only way Litecoin goes anywhere is if it can be used to compliment bitcoin in some manner. So there would be a need for a transaction that was somehow a litecoin/bitcoin mix imo. The thought that litecoin is silver to bitcoin gold is incorrect. Silver and gold are two different elements and each has their specific uses; silver of course being very much an industrial metal. There is no such distinction between litecoin and bitcoin. Both are crypto-"currencies", with slightly different rules, and bitcoin has 99% of the marketshare.

I'm a Litecoin fan too and I has a stash of both LTC and BTC, but for now and the very foreseeable future at least, BTC is by far the top dog.

The only success litecoin or any alt-scam has is to prove that cryptocurrency is unstable and worthless.

Imagine: "Oh, you use BTC? Try litecoin! Or whatever new one comes out next! Wait...where are you going? Why aren't you taking this seriously?!"

Get out.

We're all sorry that your sad that you weren't an early adopter of BTC and don't have 10,000 stashed away, but trying to ruin the whole thing because of your tears ain't the way to go.

Tongue

We are early bitcoin adopters. But we're not the ultra-early innovator types (apologies for anyone reading this who is in that élite group). If BTC becomes even semi-successful reaching even a fraction of critical mass, it may well be (but by no means with certainty) worth $1000 or more per BTC anyway; IMO even n00bs now, including myself, are still early adopters. Aren't there still probably less fewer than a half million estimated Bitcoin users worldwide?

This board is labeled, "Speculation about the Bitcoin price." That would be why nobody talks about litecoin. I bet in litecoin forums there would be people speculating about litecoin there.

Then what would the GOAL of whatever derp coin be but to either A.) Dilute the BTC name/crytpocurrency in general B.)Sucker enough people in so you can cash out ?  There isn't a single alt-scam that has ANYTHING even close to being original enough idea to "compliment" BTC besides those two ideas.

Plus, but yea. Doesn't even go in this board anyways like Yuhfhrhfr pointed out Cheesy

Ah poor baby scared it might steal some of the BTC profits away. If it can't handle the competition it deserves to die.

It's not that BTC can't handle it, but that the whole idea at risk.  Now, it's quickly apparent that you're looking forward to graduating junior high in a few months, but you failed to even address the concern in my post.  What GOAL could litecoin have except for bringing down all cryptocurrency?

A fix for one of the obvious flaws in btc for one the long wait times by having faster blocks which also protects against large loss of hash rate that will cripple btc if it ever happens. And my point stands if btc is that fragile good riddance.

The point of Litecoin is to have a cryptocurrency designed to be CPU-friendly for as long as possible (thereby providing a lower mining cost of entry for individuals).

Also, there's Namecoin, which provides a distributed key-value store using the blockchain model.

Sure, most altchains are just "me-too" operations where they took Bitcoin, changed the parameters a bit, and spat up their own genesis block, but let's not paint all of them with that brush.

If there is something that will make Bitcoin succeed, it is growth of utility - greater quantity and variety of goods and services offered for BTC. If there is something that will make Bitcoin fail, it is the prevalence of users convinced that BTC is a magic box that will turn them into millionaires, and of the con-artists who have followed them here to devour them.

I also think alternative coins are bad for the reputation of Bitcoin. There must only be one!

Why couldn't Bitcoin be like Red Bull, where every cheap attempt at producing a clone has only strengthened the prestige of the "original"?

Right, just like there should only be one fiat currency. LOL

Hopes and dreams won't get you what you want when it depends on other people's choices.

Sorry to burst your bubble but red bull was by no means the "original". The original was Lucozade Energy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucozade) which first appeared in 1927. Red bull came along much much later, and was actually based on a thai energy drink the name of which eludes me. What does this prove? Not much except that the first is not necessary the best.

Every clone does strengthen Bitcoin right now.

What else can you do with an altcoin except trade it for BTC ?
(with the exception of namecoin... I wish that project would get more dev love)

All namecoin need is a namespace reboot and a usecase.  Squatters have registered anything of value already and there is no significant reason to use namecoin in the first place.  Sure, domains can be confiscated, but most governments have been playing nice in that arena recently.
