Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

I have already given a few out (secret santa office party) and intend on giving out more.

Also, if you are Canadian, these blend in well in the strip club Wink I make sure one gets in each girls collection.
It's also that time of year when the professional buskers are out playing xmas tunes and singing carols while trying to hawk their homemade cd
... if they are decent, ill drop one in the guitar case.

Lol, I hope there are enough BTC enthusiasts in your office that you didn't reveal yourself.

That's a great idea. I hate going to the shops buying shit and now I'll have to buy some christmas present to my colleagues. Instead I'll just generate a vanity address, send the amount of coins equal to the worth that the presents have to be and the private key will be my gift.

I gave several gifts that i bought with Bitcoins. Is that giving Bitcoin, or not?

Right now, most people really don't value getting a Casascius coin or something like that, because it takes other actions before one can spend it, people don't understand "cryptocurrency", etc.
The ones to whom i've given them were suspicious and unappreciative. I think there is a good chance they will somehow lose or even throw away the value in them.

So, i think it's more useful to just buy gifts with Bitcoin for now.

I voted Yes, which really means "perhaps, if I can pull my fingers out and get around to it". My auntie Mira seemed fascinated enough by BTC to be happy to hear me talk about it for over an hour to her - and she's far from a serious technophile - so she might be deserving of a little appreciation. Last year I gave casascius coins to immediate family, younger cousins, and a few others.  Where children were involved, they seemed to grasp pretty quickly that I was giving them something kind of like gold that they could spend over the internet.  Then I gave the coins to the parents, explaining only that they were valuable and should be kept in safekeeping until the recipients were older.

That approach worked pretty well.  For a brief period in time I was called "eccentric" rather than "crazy", and I still occasionally get asked by one of them how much their bitcoins are worth.

So I'll be giving them out again this year.  Why quit what produces positive results?

I thought about it, but talked to my wife and she said it was a bad idea.  People just wouldn't understand, would think it was a weird gift, etc.  Like imanikin said, I have a feeling it would just be an unappreciated gift.  People who aren't interested in Bitcoin might put it on the same level as fruitcake or something.

I think it is far better to use Bitcoin to purchase gifts with.  For example, I bought my reddit secret santa gift with Bitcoin.

I will give a 5BTC Cascasius coin to my uncle. He want to buy some but her wife did not give the "ok" even if they are already rich. She think it's a scam and I'm stupid. I wont give any BTC to my relative that don't have interest in them since they will most likely waste them.

+1 Bee Brothers make great gift boxes. Bitcoin Alpaca socks are nice this time of the year in northern hemisphere.  Smiley

There is of course a ton of other vendors in the B world now. And that's more useful to the success of Bitcoin itself in the long run.

Plus, wherever i buy gifts for fiat, i always tell them that i want to pay with B in the future.

i gave silver as gift once, halfway toward the same feeling, but people on average know silver's worth something Tongue. The crucial point we will reach is when the average person KNOWs bitcoin's worth something. maybe 5 years in.

No - the funds are at an address that can not be determined until a secret is reveled on christmas day 2013. Its a plug for my site lbaat.net (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=128581.0). Basically your secret and lbaat secret combined make private key to address. Since you need both secrets, lbaat.net can't ever know anything of value.

Yes, this is true.

Although all secrets are connected, so all you need is the seed if the site were to ever go away. We have a solution to that problem, but not worthwhile at the moment.
