I guess that the reason is to prove they know the private key. I guess that it was found by the large collider thing, since, from what I know, they ask only for a % of the money after "cracking" the private key of a wallet. As far as I know the "author" of this puzzle-transaction is unknown. Whom are you asking? I know. I just tried to give some sort of reasoning behind what could mean that self-sending of those funds. Anyone with a better idea is most welcome to share it Bitcoin is a virtual currency, it has a high level of security, in addition, it also has a freedom, so we can not find out who sent the funds. That is a good thing, but it is also a disadvantage to bitcoin. And I think the author of those deals does not matter, the main thing is that you can get rewards from it.

This puzzle is very strange. If it's for measuring the world's brute forcing capacity, 161-256 are just a waste (RIPEMD160 entropy is filled by 160, and by all of P2PKH Bitcoin). The puzzle creator could improve the puzzle's utility without bringing in any extra funds from outside - just spend 161-256 across to the unsolved portion 51-160, and roughly treble the puzzle's content density. If on the other hand there's a pattern to find... well... that's awfully open-ended... can we have a hint or two? I am the creator. You are quite right, 161-256 are silly. I honestly just did not think of this. What is especially embarrassing, is this did not occur to me once, in two years. By way of excuse, I was not really thinking much about the puzzle at all. I will make up for two years of stupidity. I will spend from 161-256 to the unsolved parts, as you suggest. In addition, I intend to add further funds. My aim is to boost the density by a factor of 10, from 0.001*length(key) to 0.01*length(key). Probably in the next few weeks. At any rate, when I next have an extended period of quiet and calm, to construct the new transaction carefully. A few words about the puzzle. There is no pattern. It is just consecutive keys from a deterministic wallet (masked with leading 000...0001 to set difficulty). It is simply a crude measuring instrument, of the cracking strength of the community. Finally, I wish to express appreciation of the efforts of all developers of new cracking tools and technology. The "large bitcoin collider" is especially innovative and interesting!

Thank you for your kind words regarding the LBC. We're now on our way to #53 - ETA somewhere between now and 40 days (only you know how long then ) I am all for distributing some more finds along the way, but if I may suggest: 1 additional in #54 search space (0.054001) 2 additional in #55 search space (0.055001 & 0.055002) 4 additional in #56 search space (0.056001 - 0.056004) etc - you get the idea. -> for as much as your 161-256 funds suffice - or you're willing to spend. I'm sure by the time we get to these, others - myself included - may hop in to continue in that scheme. Rico

That's very nice to hear, but please prove yourself by signing a message with the last address (256) from the transaction, which hasn't been cracked yet.

Why the heck do you care? He is not asking for money. He is giving it away. Your "prove it" post is just annoying. He will either move the coins as he said he is going to do or not. What the hell does it matter if he proves himself to you or not? Do you think he is running a scam with his single post claiming to be the creator of a puzzle that gives away Bitcoins?

Indeed. So how long with current technology would it take to crack these addresses if there is no pattern? How much risk are these funds actually in if computer advancements continue at the current rate?
