There are quite a few attempts at solar powered mining on the web, either here, on YouTube or blogs. There's an example from a thread here and more results here Smiley

Here's an interesting video on the subject

Basically it could already be a reality... But the costs of solar energy equipment is quite high, and it's hard enough to ROI on ASIC's... Adding solar energy equipment would make ROI almost impossible.

I think sun energy in general is very open in showing potential for anything so that is a really interesting and productive thought. Very incredible thought. I'm sure we can find a way to utilize that.

to power a 1200watt ASIC based on 7 hours of good sunlight a day would require 17x 240w solar panels..

though a solar panel can last a decade, divide the total solar panel costs by 40(3month) and youll reach about $120.
add that $120 to your $1800 ASIC you need to spend every 3 months.=$1900

now if you can mine using just 1 ASIC and get atleast $2000 every 3 months ($80 profit).. then you are onto something..
but you would be surprised.. its not the electric that hits people its the ASIC cost having to upgrade it every 3 months as hashrates rise.

the way the chinese win is that they can build a rig for $300 and sell it at retail for $1800.. meaning for every rig you buy.. they get upto 5 for free

in the UK it works out as £540($750) electric for 3 months ongrid or £85($120) solar costs..

though you save £455($630) on the electric.. its still £1300($1800) a rig totalling as i said before nearly £1400($1920)

you are still 5-6 times less profitable than the chinese but atleast not as bad as 7-8 times if you were using on-grid electric

This links seems to be helpfull. My family is also consulting to have one solar panel and i think one port of it will be available for me. Looking at the above guide to setup one mining ring with it (fully solar powered).

In mining with solar energy in best for the large or small scale miner. Because It will reduce the electricity bill and less installation price and many advantages are there. Even one of my friend is also using solar mining machine. Its pretty easy to find in European countires.

by how the thing are going, the energy require is too big, and it will be bigger, if bitcoin will not fail

and think about it, if there was the possibility, why they ar enot using it for bank system and everything else already, which waste far more energy than bitcoin can even dream?

becausse it's not feasible to cover every energy with sun

When you use solar panel for mining, you also need battery or grid power. That will cost money as well.

Unless you only mine during sunlight.

We´ve covered our roof with solar panels some years ago.
It was supported by the government in Germany.
If we sell that power to the public, we get 50 cents / kWh.
Then we buy this energy back for 25 cents / kWh. Tongue

So, why consume this heavyly supported power yourself?

haha, very smart  Smiley but actually I think that government has its ways to prevent such abuse, when they know you do it they will impose a fine which might be much bigger than you made on those manipulations.

So, be careful, do not play games with the government.

I am careful. It´s absolutely legal. Germany wants to boost his renewable energy sources to get rid of nuclear energy. Thats why they give away something called "Einspeisevergütung" to people which are having solar power on their roofs. Thats why many farmers built things like this:
http://www.pv-magazine.de/typo3temp/pics/b92035ae4a.jpg
Those "Solar-Huts" where spreading like wildfires.

we have solar power for some years now. The support from the government was lowered since then (but only for new power plants so we still get the money we got back then).

I understand that this is absolutely legal to use solar panels to get electricity and to obtain the support from the government for doing this. But is it legal to sell the energy obtained in this way to the third parties? I think it is not.

Although I've never seen that before I think it's an excellent idea.

For centuries the sun has always been literally dumping energy on our planet that we could use for (almost) free. All we need is a solar panel to collect that energy which is why I think it is very smart to use that for your house.

It would definitely be a good idea, if you can figure it out, as it would massively reduce the cost of electricity which is something that Bitcoin mining really increases.

Only curious about this: Are you from Germany?

It is legal, you sell your power for 50 cents / kWh to the grid and consume grid power for the price of 25 cents / kWh. You don´t have to cover your power demand by your own solar power (If that´s what you´re wondering about). Selling the power to the grid is especially useful, when your solar panes produce enough energy for 7 houses (at peak times).

What if in the future we can have efficient ways to mine through sun energy? Can mining be decentralized through something like this? If there was a cheap way to install this on people's rooftops everyone could become a miner and if millions of people do it maybe it can challenge the big mining cartels? We need to think of something.

Usually a 60KW solar panel is around 1m by 1m so this is indeed possible and could probably be used to power a few antminer S7s!

more than a few, you can actually power 50x of them, and bears i mind that when all this will be more available, the efficiency of the future miners would be far greater than what we have todays

so with the same watteg you might run many more powerful miners

Realistically the cost of setting all this up is prohibitive. If your not feeding back into the hydros mains then it mean your going to have to have a battery bank to store the energy and id be very sceptical of actually achieving 60kw out of a 1m by 1m panel If your using solar energy you usually sell back to you supplier and unless you have great sun all year round your going to take some time to get back your initial investment.

As some fellow poster mention, there are some problems with this:

Mining equipment requires investment on advance, it takes some time to get back (by mining) the amount you invested in miners.

Solar equipment also requires investment on advance, it takes time for the equipment to offset the benefit of paying for electricity.

So it is a lot of investment beforehand, and both miners and solar panels can become obsolete and require maintenance.

It's a little risky.

Solar panels all over would be great but currently I have found a couple of neat ways to go ahead and start solar mining for cheap (considering solar mining) with ease and no prior knowledge needed.

http://www.amazon.com/Goal-Zero-22004-Solar-Generator/dp/B00CWBABRM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1451948152&sr=8-4&keywords=goal+zero
http://www.amazon.com/Goal-Zero-32201-Boulder-Solar/dp/B003SJ2B8O/ref=sr_1_4?s=lawn-garden&srs=3555756011&ie=UTF8&qid=1451948229&sr=1-4&keywords=goal+zero

Now this is pretty damn pricey but really opens your eyes to the ability to mine on solar (and the cost to just mine on low power sticks ), now another option which i find a lot easier would be

http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Charger-Industry-Leading-SUNPOWER/dp/B00TEQJEC6/ref=sr_1_5?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1451948572&sr=1-5&keywords=solar+panel+usb

this and  http://www.amazon.com/Xiaomi-16000mAh-External-Battery-Smartphones/dp/B00XG5H7M0/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&srs=9494944011&ie=UTF8&qid=1451948667&sr=1-1 (You can get a similar priced 20,000mAh unit on aliexpress from Xiaomi)

Now with those two I would use one of these and stake
http://www.amazon.com/Meegopad-Windows-Desktop-X5-Z8300-Computer/dp/B016HR9GJU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451948757&sr=8-1&keywords=cherry+trail+mini+windows+pc

I know staking isn't mining or Bitcoin but this window pc won't overheat allow you to be fully making coins off the grid for less than $230 bucks, now instead of the miner cost you put it in couple stable POS coins and trade the revenue over for btc or reinvest.

You can also replace the windows pc with PI2 and save alot but lose a ton of power and coins but totally an option to Solar Stake under 120$
