I;m not sure how true this report is, but it does seem likely that Microsoft will support the US gov to do this

http://www.disclose.tv/news/a_terrifying_traffic_analysis_of_windows_10/121544

It does show that Windows is not the OS to use for any financial transactions, including Bitcoin.

Im surprised people are even making the move to windows 10, i upgraded to it but it was absolutely horrible. i had to revert back to windows 7. Lots of people ive spoken to are also equally disappointed with it.

And the thing that is worse, because of safety issues - like hackers constantly figuring out new ways to hack all the different versions of Windows - Windows Updates are virtually a safety requirement. The thing that happens with Updates is, all updated older versions of Windows wind up becoming just like Windows 10, except for the appearance that the user sees when he uses his own computer.

I bought a new notebook computer with Windows 10 on it. It was cheaper than an equivalent computer with Linux or nothing on it. The reason it is cheaper is that it is full of rubbish that I don't want. Anti-virus (the wrong one), Skype, music stuff, cloud realted software, That rubbish cortana stuff that it's really hard to disable. games, and loads more. I'll use it for a bit longer, and I'll put Ubuntu on it.

I think it's also caused the internet connection here to be capped due to excessive traffic.

Windows 8 and Windows 10 eats your bandwidth, by diverting it for useless updates (some of them quite big, say 1 or 2 GB in size) and to other useless background applications. The issue is that we can't even detect these updates / programs running on the background, so it is impossible to stop them or slow them down (well, that is unless you are a programming expert).

Someone should develop a little computer that you place between your computer and your modem, that you can use to completely know and control what you are getting over the Internet.

It used to be called a packet sniffer. I made one years ago out of a redundant old pc.

Can you use it to control the "connections," limiting the ones you don't want?

The Russian anti-virus system Kaspersky had a similar tool, to block these useless windows background applications. But MicroSoft guys retaliated against them, and in some cases Windows 8 / Windows 10 users are facing compatibility issues while using Kasper. Kasper is perhaps the most hated IT firm in the world, as far as MS is concerned.

The packet sniffer I used sat between the computer and the hub, so you can do what you like with it. If you are running it on the PC, then Microsoft has got some control over it. Of course, wireless would be a different issue, but if you hardwired a router to your i'net connection, then you could have a wireless transmitter in that. I bet there are some Linux applications around to let you use old hardware for this.

I'm using a little Cisco ASA 5505 firewall at home, so I was able to find out what happening on my network and then seal off Windows 10, but then it started complaining and throwing error messages because of the lack of necessary connectivity. Finally I've got rid of Windows 10 on all of my and my wife's machines. It's just too talkative for our taste.

So Windows needs dialog with Microsoft as it logs your data? Makes you wonder if you could spoof it. Smiley

I've had Cortana go on a psychotic break on me a couple of times now, fortunately I found how to disable her but that was some weird shit man.

Not sure if it's a real dialogue, but the TCP handshake usually enough to determine if there are a connectivity issues.

I've just managed to disable Cortana if anyone is interested. You have to try to rename the directory. and it tells you you can't. Leave the window open, and stop cortana in task manager, then very quickly, you should hit retry on the directory rename (you wil lhave changed the name in the first attempt of course). Once you've done that it won't restart.

A day or so after she (Cortana) flipped/bugged out over some kind of Cepstral licensing issue she went into my shell:startup directory and deleted my p2pool shortcut and all the drop-down menu history. I got home and found the computer had rebooted itself and bitcoind was running all by itself. I'm guessing the fact it was a script and not an exe and aptly named 'p2p-snake' she got confused. That's when I turned her off.

Reading all this, I am more and more happy that I kept away from Win 10 and also blocked all the Win7 updates, which enable "telemetry".

But it looks like I'll to go back to Linux in a year or so, once Win7 stops being supported...

Yeah, Windows is the wrong OS for paranoid people and control freaks.
For all normal people it works just fine.
