A short Introduction to BURST's POC mining

Burst uses a new algorithm for proof of hdd capacity (POC) mining.
Miners pre-generate chunks of data known as 'plots' which are then saved to disk.
The number of plots you store is effectively your mining speed.
Every block the miner will skim through the saved plots, and come up with an amount of time until it is able to mine a block
if another block hasn't yet been found. After reading through the plots is complete, your hardware can idle until the newest block.

Burst uses a new algorithm for proof of hdd capacity (POC) mining. Miners pre-generate chunks of data known as 'plots' which are then saved to disk.
The number of plots you store is effectively your mining speed.
Every block the miner will skim through the saved plots, and come up with an amount of time until it is able to mine a block if another block hasn't yet been found.
After reading through the plots is complete, your hardware can idle until the newest block.

• NXT based
• Proof of Stake Removed
• Proof of Capacity implemented
• No IPO
• No Premine
• 4 minute block time
• 2,158,812,800 coins total
• Block reward starts at 10,000/block
• Block Reward Decreases at 5% each month

Miners generate and cache chunks of data known as 'plots', which are divided into 4096 portions known as 'scoops'.
Plots are generated by taking a public address and a nonce, then hashing it, pre-appending the resulting hash,
repeating the hash-pre-append cycle many times, and then hashing the whole thing and xor'ing the last hash with the whole thing.

Plots are staggered together so chunks of the same scoop number are together, then written to disk.
Each block has a generation signature which is derived only from the previous block's generation signature and miner, so it is difficult to manipulate.

When mining, the scoop number to be used for a block is derived from the generation signature and the block height,
so the miner reads all relevant scoops (each plot will have 1 relevant scoop, and staggering allows for larger sequential read with less seeking).
Only 0.024% of the stored data will need to be read each block.

The generation signature is hashed with each scoop. 8 bytes are taken from the hash, then divided by a scaling factor (inverse difficulty).
The resulting number is a number of seconds. If that many seconds passes since the last block without a new one,
the address/nonce combination used to generate that plot/scoop is eligible to announce a new block.

The miner's hardware can just sit idle until either that time or a new block.
The address/nonce is included in the block as proof of eligibility, and the block is signed by that address.

Technically, this mining process can be mined POW-style, however mining it as intended will yield thousands of times the hashrate, and your hardware will sit idle most of the time.
Continuously hashing until a block is found is unnecessary, as waiting long enough will cause any nonce to eventually become valid.

Congrats to the new thread!

I have products which are running well on top of the API of NXT (and HZ), which I could (probably) port to BURST - provided there are good funds/crowdbounty to pay for my work.

Here is a selection:

Even if other things are probably more important for you at the moment ... just keep me in mind.

 Wink

AltFolio = Altcoin Portfolio solution || AAsset = crowdfunding, dividends paying = profit sharing Assets on NXT || Newbium great new platform || AssetGraphs = novel GUI to assets & shareholders (won nxthacks2015!) || ABEE = Block Explorer Extension for ETH clones, live on SOIL || Advice = Consulting || assetparser.py and shareholders.py - tools for NXT/HZ asset buyers & issuers || bamm.py || PeerCrawler || PGP || Texts || Github e.g. ChainCountDown, ethjsre |||| /give/ GiveBackLicense /give/ |||| Looking for an affordable crypto advertisement service with adspaces on crypto-attractive websites, contact me, thx.

In your previous message you said "Easy Peasy" Rip Trippers says this all the time.  He owns a vape jucie company and reviews mods, RDA's and such.    If you need to know what I am talking about this is his YouTube channel.  https://www.youtube.com/user/RiPTrippers

Anyways, What all have you gotten done?  Are you only having issues with the gui and running .bat files?  Or are there other issues as well?

It is good to finally see Burst getting the attention it deserves. I think it needs more miners and a price increase to make it even more interesting. The features that it provides such as the Proof of Concept is unlike any other and I am willing to see this project reach larger masses as time comes by.

I have a question...Just for curiosity, are assets dividends paid weekly or monthly? Are the rates the same for any asset or does it vary?  Huh

i just saw there are GUIs round for adresses plotting and optimizing, I think of dont do the work twice why not just bring them all together
to one powerful GUI?

I have to say I am not best in programming, think I do it the hard way with a java installer, passphrase writing, Backup the file at the place user wants then dump adress to txt-file out of passphrase, read passphrase out again for possibility of easy copying to wallet Login.
I am hanging on the dump_adress.bat. Can navigate to the bat file but programm doesnt see a second needed file. But as sayed there is a GUI for adress generating. Dont know perhaps java is not needed for this GUI and it would be easy to integrate?

Sorry for wierd writeing havent slept much Smiley

As i understand it, the asset is controlled by the issuer, and the asset issuer can set any terms on the asset. It could be that you get your car washed next coming sunday, if someone was silly enough to issue that asset.  Or it could be fractional ( how many assets you own ) ownership of some company or asset.

This depends on the asset you are invested in and who pays them out.

I know for the Playground I planned on weekly Payouts for certain aspects of the the Phases.  However I am a little behind as I have been working trying to get the Playground up and running fully.  But for Playground, Playground (yes listed twice), and PGround3.  These once things are set will be weekly.

For other assets that all depends on when they want to or when they are suppose to.

The features that it provides such as the Proof of Concept is unlike any other and I am willing to see this project reach larger masses as time comes by.

I have a question...Just for curiosity, are assets dividends paid weekly or monthly? Are the rates the same for any asset or does it vary?  Huh

As i understand it, the asset is controlled by the issuer, and the asset issuer can set any terms on the asset. It could be that you get your car washed next coming sunday, if someone was silly enough to issue that asset.  Or it could be fractional ( how many assets you own ) ownership of some company or asset.

Exactly right.  Would depend on what the general use for the asset would be.  Some would need a longer term for returns while ohers may only need a short time.  Depends on use of funds and what they investments are going into.

How often or how does the Burst.Ninja pool payout.  Once a day, when a block is found, or when.  I switched back to Burst Ninja.  Would rather support someone I am familiar with then someone im not.  So I switched back.  Just wondering when I could expect payments from the pool.

Depends on the asset you're talking about, mine currently pays monthly. (ByteEnt - 1800253871016293364)

 Wink

Please message me with what you've got and I'll take a look, if it is something I think (we think, the team) that would benefit the coin, I would be happy to initiate a CF.

How often or how does the Burst.Ninja pool payout.  Once a day, when a block is found, or when.  I switched back to Burst Ninja.  Would rather support someone I am familiar with then someone im not.  So I switched back.  Just wondering when I could expect payments from the pool.

Ninja pays out when it feels like it. xD. No, but that's gonna be the way of the future with AI, am I right? Skynet yes? (Just kidding, heh.) But yea, how it really works, is the pool will pay you when you reach the minimum payout amount. (I can't recall if I set it to 300 or 350, but it is one of those.)

To refresh people on how exactly the colorful (hopefully being redesigned) crap on ninja's main page correlates to understandable figures, it's fairly simple...

Chart on the right is the historical shares chart, this will tell you the miner's estimated size (works for actual size if using blago's miner, if not it is a rough and very much changing number. hah.) and how much the miner has mined total during their time on the pool. The right chart will also tell you how much the miner is going to make if a block were found right then for HISTORIC submissions, and also how much they've got in queue, and how much they've made that hasn't cleared yet.

Ninja's left chart is the current round chart, this shows the amount of BURST a miner will make if a block is found right now, IN LEFT CHART. It also shows the miners' submissions total, and their values in time. (because we all know that we mine with time+space here in BURST. heh.) The lower the submission, of course, the higher the amount of BURST you'll get will be, and the higher up you'll be on the visible ladder. Only submissions of a month or less are accepted. This minimizes lag and also there's no way anything that low would benefit a miner on ninja anyway, so it is pointless to accept them.

Now, where it gets a little complicated... lol...

The left and right numbers are ADDED together, yes, I know, pretty crazy...lol. So, you're not going to make only what's in the left pie, but what is combined number in both of the current pie's numbers. (even though the one on the right is a historic pie, it has a current round payout number as well. Just happens to be based on the miner's historic submissions. The history of the total mined lasts forever, the other 'history' isn't a forever history, but based off (a set number I can't remember) blocks.)

So, when your total in the confirmed amount that you've won, (which is a total of the left and right numbers during a time that ninja finds a block) gets up to a number above the set payout amount, that's when you'll get paid. Smiley

@Lenore @crowetic and @pinballdude:

Thanks for your replies. I have now clarified my doubts regarding the asset dividends payouts. About ByteEnt, I just invested in it a week ago and considering that payment is monthly, then I will be patient for next months dividends. So far I have invest into Playgrounds, ByteEnt and Playgrounds 3 asset. But will continue to invest more into them as well as buy shares from Income asset and my portfolio will be complete.  Grin

Will all that is happening in Burst, I might consider making a HDD mining farm someday. I will be really could to have one instead of an ASIC farm.  Roll Eyes

I hope to see more investors like you to support this coin and give it value and reason.

If you plan on starting a small farm and do not want to buy a load of equipment unless you already have it.   Have a USB 3.0 port.  Found some samsung 5TB 3.0 external hard drives on newegg.  Picked one up for I think it was $121.xx shipped.  Guess it would depend on how log you plan on being in burst.

Can confirm that USB3 drives (I run almost my entire 70+ TB on USB with individual ports on internal controller cards in a rackserver.) run just as well as internal drives do. Though, I've not really tested them when running via a USB3 hub. Mine all run on direct ports via USB3 controller SATA cards, or on the board's controller directly.

Even if it is not very profitable to mine BURST with your HDD, as the cost of HDD is more than what you make in BURST weekly or monthly (based on burstcoin.biz calculator) it will still be a fun and innovating way of mining a crypto currency and support its network. I might start will a small HDD mining farm and test how mining BURST with them works. But sometimes I wonder if the HDD could support being used long enough for mining BURST 24/7 I guess that mining with them will shorten its lifespan, right? Also, have anyone tried mining with a Solid State Drive (SSD) by the way?  Huh

I think it works pretty good.

Have plotted around 1TB on it so far and have another 1TB plotting now.   Doesnt take any longer then on a normal HDD.  I am still wondering if a USB 2.0 would work with the correct drivers.  If so that would make space even cheaper.

Also I found a few dual bay drive duplicaors.  Stated to hold 2 HDDs for either storage or duplication.  3.0 as well and only run like $20.   Capable of up to 10TB.  and can use SATA I, II, or III.  So a bunch of hard drives laying around could be useful.

Still would like to try using hosting for mining.   Find one that has unlimited space and mine till they kick you off.  lol
