Blacks-Only Dorm Created at the University of Connecticut

According to Dr. Erik M. Hines, Faculty Director and Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at UConn, the reason why they’re creating this blacks-only living space is because blacks do so poorly at academics that he believes they will do better in an “African American” environment.

“African American males graduate at a lower rate than their peers,” said Hines, adding that the graduation rate for all UConn students was 82.5 percent, whereas for blacks it was only 54 percent.

Hines, who will serve as faculty advisor to the 40 students involved with the project, went on to say that SCHOLA2RS House is “a space for African American men to one, come together and validate their experiences that they may have on campus.” [sic]

this is a true definition of racism.. he tried to make some logical excuses forthis stupid regulation but he cant run away its consequences.. this is so ridiculous..

There is a lot of racism there and maybe such project is not so bad..maybe people really can act better if they have similar people round them...what if is a mixed dorm and is a black student with 6 white and those white consider him less worthy..Than he will feel better in dorm where are only black people

It's a difficult question.

It's the same thing that when people ask for parity. Parity means discrimination by gender, so it's sexist so it shouldn't exist.

But it's also a good way to balance inequalities. Of course it's a short term solution but it helps understanding that Blacks/women are able to study/have a political role.

I'm not really convinced by this method though. But I understand why they're doing it.

Ok they can study as well as other people and races, but black people for example between them have much more in common than with other races, at least between them won't be racism
