We frequently speculate about the “killer app” that will drive wider adoption of Bitcoin, but rarely do we look beyond Europe and North America. Meanwhile, in developing countries, digital money is already taking root. From Bitcoin on Latin American social media to mobile money wallets in South Africa, digital currency is spreading to communities all over the world. Let’s explore a few intriguing projects:

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

I like this one the most. " Nigerian digital money wallet Bitsoko will use funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support digital financial literacy. Bitsoko’s Android app uses blockchain technology to lower transaction costs. The company is encouraging Bitcoin adoption in Kenya by setting up local businesses to accept bitcoin payments. "

I have been following the progress being made by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support digital financial literacy and I am glad this project was

identified.

http://vumi.org/ also sounds like a good project and you can get it here ---> https://github.com/praekelt/vumi/

I am a strong supporter of everything that helps these people move forward with their life with as little poverty as possible. Bitcoin is already being a solid currency for these people, but it can be even better if there are several Bitcoin related ATM's placed in popular places in for example Africa, South Armerica and so on. People must be able to convert Bitcoin into their local currency back and forth without hassle.

The 5 mentioned uses in third world countries are nothing special as much more can be achieved with better planning and a bit more effort. But if I have to choose one of 5 options, I like usecase 3 the most.
