Best way is to hold them your self and trade them on forums like Bitcointalk for example , there is a "Currency exchange" section . You choose the payment methods and the rates that fits you and that's it .
Just make sure to not accept Paypal as payment method from Newbies (Paypal can be chargebacked and Bitcoin can't , do the math) and note that an escrow won't help at all in this case .

you must always trust someone else if you want to sell your funds, there is no way around to this

if you're talking about the fact that you do not want to hold the money there, then you can use escrow with a forum member on bitcointalk, but selling here costs more, sometime...

BTC-e.com, a Russian exchange that has been active since the spring of 2013 and -as far as I know- free of serious problems. But as always; every online exchange has its risks.

You cannot deposit less than $2000 (fiat) on this site. Better transfer crypto over there.

convert your coins into USD,hold it

if your talking about a third party service to hold funds, that is not your own bank..
then you are talking about the one thing you despise.

if you dont want a "stranger" third party. then just use local bitcoins to sell your coins back to your own bank account. and then let your bank account hold the fiat funds until:

the momement is right change it again

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

The best option to trade bitcoins is better to hold it in your wallet, you can go to localbitcoin.com and buy it and hold it in your wallet when ever you feel the price is high you can sell their and convert it to you fiat currency in your bank , next time when you see the price down you can buy back with the same option. Like this you will have full hold of your bitcoins and fiat currency with out worrying of getting scammed from any exchange.

locally.   see my sig.

Psst!!  Wanna make bitcoin unstoppable? Why the Only Real Way to Buy Bitcoins Is on the Streets. Avoid banks and centralized exchanges.   Buy/Sell coins locally.  Meet other bitcoiners and develop your network.   Try localbitcoins.com or find or start a buttonwood / satoshi square in your area.  Pass it on!

Localbitcoins is a choice, but if you want someone else to hold your money, you could also try Coinapult Locks: https://coinapult.com/faq

What's the deal with decentralised exchanges and coins tied to USD? Wasn't there supposed to be something in the pipeline? I'm less worried about exchange sites being hacked than them shutting me down for totally dumb reasons.

If you want trade with medium amount use localbitcoin find people near you to take a trade, or trade with people in this forum, don't forget to use escrow.
If you trade in large amount, I think go to trusted exchange, but don't keep your amount for long time if your transaction success, Transfer it to your local bank account.

Have you not used local bitcoins before OP? Google it.

Either that or Mycelium Local Trader.

That's new features from mycelium? It's works like localbitcoin?

If you don't want to use 3rd party crypto exchanges then I think your only option is to trade person to person and I would check out Localbitcoins or the bitcoin forums in your country.

i agree with BTC-e, it looks like they know what they are doing so far to stay active and on top. i have never had any problem with their services so far.

but the only other place to trade bitcoin without exchangers is localbitcoins which is not that glamorous either.
