Engraving in metal is a great method but do you need to go to such lengths? Who would be doing the engraving? What if it was somebody bitcoin/tech savvy? He could play dumb at the time & a few weeks or months later swipe the wallet.

I think paper wallets that are laminated is sufficient.

First of all, create your own paper wallets and then laminate them. Print duplicate copies and store them in multiple locations as DannyHamilton stated already. Example : One copy at your house in your safe and one copy in a safe deposit box at the bank. <Remember to leave notes or something in your Will, or nobody will know about it, when you die>

Monitor them over time and if they fade, just replace them with new copies. ^smile^

Metal stamping sets/punches are available where you hammer the letters into metal.  For the sets without lower case letters, turning the letter to indicate it is lower case has been done. Another solution would to etch a line and stamp upper above and lower below the line.



A metal that is resistant to corrosion but malleable such as sheet aircraft aluminum would be appropriate, you could make a metal wallet address. However if you really want fire resistance, you'd get tungsten with a higher melting point, but it's moh hardness is the same if not harder than tool hardened steel.

You also may want features such as one-time-use/tamper evident seals.

I use a permanent marker on 3x5 cards for a pass phrase that needs a specific salt to turn into a private key.

The salt is backed up with several family members.

The 3x5 cards with the pass phrase is stored separate from the salt in two different locations, one of which is a safe deposit box.

I will be dead long before the 3x5 cards in the safe deposit box can't be read, and family knows how to extract the funds when I'm dead, so at that point - it becomes their problem.

My signature link has a terse explanation and an address maker. It is a single address and its private key used for long term savings. A better term is "cold storage address".

the best way that I have found to work for me is simply printing the private keys on a good piece of paper and then laminating it. you can also encrypt the keys with a password so nobody can read them by looking at the paper. make 2 copies and store in different places. and if you have an extremely large amount of bitcoin you can even store the paper wallet in a safety deposit box in a secure bank.

If you do use a password (or use a salt with a pass phrase) - make damn sure there is still a way for family to retrieve the funds if a meteorite hits you in the head tomorrow.

My immunization records from when I was a baby, 40 years ago, can still be read. They were never laminated. Written and signed with regular ink.
