I'm thinking since bitcoin is very used as a official currency on internet but still not used by many people since its popularity is still not that high.. What if on year 2026 is a the year where bitcoin is known by most people .. Do you think bitcoin will be used as a National currency on that year just like money that we used right now ??

We don't know whether it will survive that long or not, and even if it does it will never be used as a national currency, bitcoin will always used as a secondary currency and not as a primary.

You'd have to refine your question. Bitcoin is already a national currency. Pontinha recognized it as a national currency back in 2015 (they're very small, located off the shore of Portugal). I don't think that some big country would declare Bitcoin as their national currency and especially not in 2016. The price is not stable enough to act as such.

What is the definition of national currency? Used by a national population or directly handled by the government? If it's the last one then I'm voting for never, ever ever.

Bitcoin can never become a national currency, and if it does then the government will come into action which will start having control over it and introducing their own rules and regulations.

local currency = yes.

national curency = no, too much corrupted politics (look argentina, people die ... but they don't change currency to reset).

Uh...it's the "national" currency of 4 people, literally.  The article said specifically, "There are four citizens: me, my wife, my son and my daughter."  It's no more legit as a "national" currency that those Posse Comitatus-type folks common in the US who mount a bunch of "no trespassing" signs (usually worn-out tires) on fenceposts around two acres of river-bottom land and declare it to the The Republic of John Q. Smith.

To answer the original question, no, I don't think so, because it can't be controlled in the way that governments manipulate their currencies.  For example, they can't determine for themselves how much is in circulation, can't print more to devalue it, etc...

Paul Rosenberg of CryptoHippie was just Operation Freedom (w/ Dr. Dave Janda) today, which is a major talk show in the Ann Arbor area that is also listened to worldwide. If you check his bio, he's a cyber security expert who formerly worked for NASA and other military contractors for the aforementioned topic. Anyways, his CH is one of those VPNs that blocks NSA spying on your shit and he's a frequent guest on the show mentioned above. His final spiel about the banking situations developing around the world is for people to possess gold, silver and yes, Bitcoin. This targeted audience is the precious metals type, so to hear them getting a dose of Bitcoin being a source of value equivalent to their metals was very powerful. Increasingly, Bitcoin is being seen and heard of as a strong go-to haven for economic turmoil that we would have thought unheard of in years past.

'Official Currency'?

Don't think so....only thing that concerns me with Bitcoin is it's value in £s, €s, $s, etc.

And actually, I hesitate to use for anything except drugs, cos the value fluctuates so wildly and it is generally just a pain the arse to use Vs electronic banking.

I am already happy if Bitcoin is one of the major digital currencies as far as online payments go. Debit cards will most likely remain the nr1 option for online purchases. They are too far ahead of all payment options/services. I am quite sure that Bitcoin can overtake PayPal in terms of total transferred value within 5 years. That will be a massive blow in the face of PayPal & Co.

With a lot of devices running transactions everything is possible but surely other cryptocurrencies  will be serving too, But I can not really describe their status as National or something different. But yes as a value instrument.

This is huge if the trend continues. Really glad to hear that targeted audience is hearing positives about Bitcoin.

Thats not gonna happen. There are possibilities for it when the technology is modified in such a way that it can't be used for illegal activities. Once such thing happens more possibilities for it to become a local currency.

I believe Liberland have declared it their official currency, although it is a new and tiny country (just a few square miles), with only about 300,000 people applying for residence there.  That's small for a country, but a nice addition of new users since it would require adoption by all.

i think anything is possible, it is hard to speculate that far into the future. we might even be using another form of currency as cash.
but i don't think any nation or or better say government would like losing control of money, also banks don't like becoming obsolete so bitcoin becoming a national currency just seems impossible to me.

As long as the regular fiat currencies are atleast somewhat stable there will be no switch.

It is just too much work to change the currency of a country. With the introduction of the euro for example, there were countless campaigns, free euro handouts (1 of each coin), massive roll over period where you could turn in your old currency for euro, etc, etc. It is just one massively expensive operation to perform, especially if there is no real reason.

Changing to bitcoin, something that has never been tested before, with a whole country is just insane. Some small micro economies might start using it though, but they have been around with alternative methods already.

There is nothing like official currency online and NO its not only because of the popularity but also because of the precautions one has to take to use it properly.People simply use the fiat and do their stuff cause not everyone cares about the anonymity or their privacy.

I don't think that some big country would declare Bitcoin as their national currency and especially not in 2016.

2026 may be different from what it is now and if government sees what good can bitcoin do. And since bitcoin can be traced, this will probably help corruption in the government. Bitcoin may not be national currency for each country but probably chose any altcoin.

Its possible for sure, everything is gonna be digital in the future plus the bitcoin has this already so it would be pretty stupid to not use it. I'm thinking that there will be a global digital currency but not with the bitcoin but it an other digital currency in the later days.

I disagree, It will be a national currency by that year, but its also pretty unpredictable because maybe the bitcoin will not exist anymore, the digital currency is the future. I'm thinking that there will be a another currency by that time that will take over the world.

I doubt, even by that year (2026) to claim a label "National Currency" since the government itself, won't let this to happen as much as we like to. However I do believe that it will be replacing US Dollar in terms of most exchange currency in most countries and that would be good enough.

If it gains more stability then why not. It would certainly perform much better than certain currencies. As an example go look up the exchange rate of the Venezuelan bolívar.

I see it as impossible, as no country is going to adopt a currency they have essentially ZERO control over.

I see it as very faintly possible that some country will adopt a digital currency, and it even might be based loosely on Bitcoin technology, but it will NOT be Bitcoin.

Well not officially I would say. But I could imagine a development where Bitcoin acts like a second currency just by being tolerated because a government in an african or south american country for instance knows they can not really ban it.

The volatility has decreased dramatically in the past few years to the point that several nations have higher volatility.

I suspect that by 2026 Bitcoin will be one of the most stable currencies in the world.

no, definitely not btc.  BUT it does appear some countries are working towards some form of digital currency (china's central bank is "studying" this).  This will allow them to tax people more easily, as there will be "no place to hide" your money

Indeed, I will not see this happen at all its just not possible with the bitcoin, the most banks hate the bitcoin.
The only like the system, I think by that time there will be another global currency created.

Exactly, something they have complete control over, and can profit from.  It makes sense, seeing how they want to tax more and more (all these new "carbon" taxes, refugee costs in europe, etc).  A new digital currency will makes their lives easier

It will not be a currency of any country, the bitcoin is to far away from that.
The bitcoin is the future but its the future of other digital currency's that are coming by that year.

Yes absolutely, but I heard a group of people had started a own country in Europe. There they have been using bitcoin as their National Currency. If in future the particular country is recognized, people might get changed to their views.

I read some minor country already used bitcoin as their national currency.
In some years some medium country will use bitcoin or accept it as an official ledger for payments. Of this I am sure.

You are right that is growing but its not really realistic this will happen, the banks are hating the bitcoin and are only interested in the system.
They will  not let this happen because they will no more control all people that are using the bank.

That will not happen so fast. It must be a lot of work to that will happen. Many people doesnt even know what Bitcoin is.
So it is hard to use it for a National currency. Many people need normal money too. Maybe later in the future.

Not going to happen. I figured those heroes each countries has fight for the freedom of their countrymen, the government can't allow the people to forget about what they did in the past. those people printed on the fiat money shouldn't be forgotten else  the next generation will lose values.

Wait... are you saying BTC has ascended to the dizzying heights of being the currency of choice for the libertarians, fringe elements around the world, wackos, drug dealders, pron peddlers, and terrorists? Got any numbers for that, because I kind of feel that ISIS is financing itself with fiat (the people in the territories they've occupied have easier access to fiat than they do to BTC), that the Provisional IRA and their friends the UVF financed themselves with fiat, that the vast majority of drug dealers will insist on fiat, etc etc. But, I'd be happy to be proven wrong - that'd be really bullish.

Yeah, that is true, in 10 years, bitcoin might be a secondary or alternative currency and accepted thru out the world..  Smiley

the real problem has been finding a global alternative. There is nothing that is ready to replace it alone, so “a basket of currencies” may be a short-term answer in the coming years until a permanent solution is found.
After over seventy years of unlimited economic power, the world is putting the U.S. Dollar on the clock.
So we need more supply and demand for bitcoin in world economy. These words only make a change with bitcoin.

That's a weird statement. Bitcoin is already "usual money" for those that have been around for a while.

I think it will happen but its a matter of time till it will happen, it will of course take some time maybe more then the predicted 2026 but it will come at the end.
We just need to be patient and wait for it till it will happen for sure, the bitcoin is the future of the world.
It is rather likely that it won't happen; it is more likely that Bitcoin will co-exist with national currencies (albeit might be adopted by smaller countries).

The state may adopt bitcoin if it were a newborn or the currency of any country becomes worthless. i think possible to dopt bitcoin
Some would already be better off if they had adopted Bitcoin (e.g. Venezuela).

Strange question.

Bitcoin was conceived to be independent of "nations". By design, a "nation" or "state" cannot influence the coin supply or another kind of monetary policy. So Bitcoin as a national currency does not make sense.

But if you mean "national currency" as a measure for the popularity of BTC, I think that by 2026 cryptocurrencies will be well known to the public and should be one of the main players in internet payment and remittances. What I don't know if the most popular cryptocurrency in 2026 still will be BTC.

I don't think bitcoin can become a national currency ever.

although I believe that bitcoin is going to be very popular by the year 2026 and be used by many more people and services but I don't think bitcoin can ever replace fiat and become the national currency of a country.

the government nor the people will accept something this global and decentralized as their country's currency. besides no government is going to give up their power of producing money and controlling money circulation.

op means more like USD is used by other nation, even if it not the real currency of that nation, if bitcoin reach massively planetary usage, icould see this happen for small country, or for country where their currency is very weak

I'm thinking since bitcoin is very used as a official currency on internet but still not used by many people since its popularity is still not that high.. What if on year 2026 is a the year where bitcoin is known by most people .. Do you think bitcoin will be used as a National currency on that year just like money that we used right now ??

no i don't think that  bitcoin will ever be used as national currency, because nobody would use bitcoin, like old people wouldn't, but it have huge chances to become a alternative currency, also after 10 years price will be pretty huge so lots of stores should accept them

It will not be a sole currency in a nation, as pointed early, many old people will not use the bitcoin.

Bitcoin is and will stay nothing more than an alternative currency. Why on earth will governments of well developed countries ditch their own currency and replace it by Bitcoin? It doesn't make sense as Bitcoin will make them lose full control over the financial industry in their country.

Not it will be not the national currency, I know what you think because you think that because you see now around this time that the value is going to rise and that is nice.
But people have also to know that Bitcoin will have not a stable currency and that it is always changing.

Not in a regular country but I think a country like Barbados can end up using Bitcoin as a default currency eventually, certainly not in 2016 tho, but sooner than we expect, some of those far countries will start using it because it beats having to deal with a physical currency.

About which country we are talking about here? I think that can happen is some small countries but who knows when. Bitcoin needs to grow much more before comes to that point.
I will not say that is impossible, I just think that 2026 is too close.

For old people there wouldn't be any issue to use bitcoin if bitcoin would help them making faster transaction, like the phones that have big buttons for easy access it would be the same for a bitcoin client mobile app to use bitcoin, about the topic bitcoin can't be as a national currency by 2026 because just imagine how many transaction happen everyday in a country.

Maybe Antarctica will use Bitcoin until then.

The whole point of a decentralized currency is it to be autonomous. A government which can't control it's own currency is certainly doomed.

Bitcoin won't be used as national currency.

Bitcoin is mined by hardware and there is nothing inside it (only cost of electric energy)

Money is also it's similar, it's paper but inside this paper, there is gold in national banks. So bitcoin can only be used in online transactions. Also it;s illegan in some countrys and it's decrypted and hard to find money sender and receiver.

there is nothing in a paper toilet either, gold you say? are you living under a rock

the value is based on the demand, no money have intrinsic value, gold also its value only come from the demand, its intrinsic value is only assuciated with the utility for building phisical stuff with it

but has nothing to do with its market value, or at least it's not responsible in large % for its value on the market

Bit of a loaded question. Bitcoin would have to make HUGE strides to be used as a national currency. I'm unsure if it's possible even for 2026.

Exactly no country will allow any digital currency to replace its own currency and we don't want that bitcoin should become a national currency, whatever it is we are satisfied with it.

Of course you already see now that Bitcoin is getting more popular and that is because the world is also getting more digital so that is perfect for the currency.
But you have to know that still there are a lot of people that dont even know what Bitcoin is so you have to promote it much more.

bitcoin is accepted in many countries as 'legal currency' even though it's not the primary currency.

and it probably will never be the primary currency in any country (not officially anyway) and it won't have to.

bitcoin is great exactly because no one can and will control it.

Governments and banks don't like it because they can't control it, but normal people should love it because it can't be controlled, because this means freedom and privacy.

That's true we need to promote it in the best possible way, and we also should recommend it to people around us which will have positive impact on user adoption.

I don't think bitcoin will not be used in National Currency, because as i know it all remain as it is. i read in this topic most of the threads are here, but everyone say that bitcoin will never use in nationalize currency and also not use in fiat currency. i like bitcoin because it is online currency.
but i don't know what will do in future, may be bitcoin will remain or not, but it is always remain in this same shape.

it doesn't really matter because bitcoin is international currency already.

who really cares about national currency status? By 2026 either everyone uses it or no one does.

National currency status has nothing to do with it.

Be an official currency that is not possible. The financial groups has no interest in this. The bitcoin will still be very used each day more and more. Always as a second currency

I'm thinking since bitcoin is very used as a official currency on internet but still not used by many people since its popularity is still not that high.. What if on year 2026 is a the year where bitcoin is known by most people .. Do you think bitcoin will be used as a National currency on that year just like money that we used right now ??

personally i think that it will take more than 10 years to be national currency of any country, a people won't like bitcoin that fast, but lets say after 20 years, this can be possible
]
as each year more and more people show interest in bitcoins,so after 20 years probably everyone will know and will use bitcoins, so they will want to have bitcoin as currency

Be an official currency that is not possible. The financial groups has no interest in this. The bitcoin will still be very used each day more and more. Always as a second currency

I disagree. If the masses get to know bitcoin countries will find a more stable currency. Just look how many have the US dollar as their main currency?
Reason why they do this if because their own currency is/was not stable and they switched to the dollar.

The same could happen with bitcoin.

I think Argentina will be the main country to use the bitcoin. Another South American country will also use it.
