Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

lot's would... wish some peeps would convince bit-pay to start co-using litecoin as well.... that would be even more epic-licious (vendor selects desired payment in BTC/LTC/fiat, consumer pays in desired currency BTC/LTC/fiat and neither party is none the wiser of what the other is doing because bit-pay handles all the exchanges etc. in the middle, the just know that 1 side paid in what they want and the other side got paid in what they wanted)
