Alright, so I've been PM'd by a few people what red-flags to look out for since I have a pretty good track record of spotting scammers.  Sometimes I get it wrong, but better safe than sorry.  Anyway, watch out for the typical behavior from scammers who will usually fit at least two or three (and sometimes even more) of the following characteristics:

0. Newbies, NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH OTHER NEWBIES, EVER. There are plenty of veteran members to do business with and ALWAYS use escrow. If you're a newbie you're doing business with another newbie, there's a 100% chance that you will get scammed (or you're a scammer yourself).
1. New account (usually created within the last 3 months, plus or minus)
2. Low-medium message count with vapid posts of little to no contributory value
3. Use of a seemingly realistic first/last name as their forum account name
4. Signs posts with full name
5. Straight out of Newbie mode right into Lending (requesting a loan of course)
6. Straight out of Newbie mode right into Currency Exchange (PayPal, Liberty Reserve, Western Union)
7. Straight out of Newbie mode and selling gift cards/codes/Steam games of any kind
(they'll often be purchased with stolen CC info, leaving you holding the bag later on down the road)
8. Any user blatantly claiming to be female
9. New user trying to sell an Apple iAnything
10. Sob stories asking for handouts
11. Never send to a Bitmerch.com address for escrow!!!

There.  Pretty much in a nutshell how to spot a scammer.  There's still some finesse to spotting a scammer, but these rules will separate most of the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.  Oh, and I guess there's one more rule:

12. NEVER DO BACKROOM DEALS VIA PM WITH NEW USERS. Make sure all deals are negotiated in the open forum for both public record and peer review.

Examples of posts that fit the scammer pattern:

* Account appears to have been abandoned once it was flagged as a scammer, or became apparent he wasn't getting a loan.

Please note that the accounts listed above aren't necessarily or automatically assumed to be scammers. They just fit the description, so to speak.

TLDR: Be careful before you freely give away your coins. From the evidence collected here, you stand substantial chance of getting ripped off if lending to someone who fits the scammer profile.  If that chance is worth making an extra 1-10% on your money, I can't stop you.

Edit: This next section will list Email addresses associated with known scammers. Users are advised to not send PayPal (or anything really) to these addresses.

He just asked for a BTC0.5 loan, then got all mad and quit the forum (or something). He seemed pretty desperate to get a loan from anyone.

Yes, which puts him on the "potential scammer list" . It might be a sock puppet account for that Torac guy forget his full bitcointalk account name...

He exhibits multiple characteristics of the typical scammer to boot.  On top of that, if he has to beg for a half a Bitcoin for nearly a week, chances are high he's not going to be able to come up with another half a Bitcoin to pay back.

Exactly. And that 0.5 BTC loan was down from a previous request for 2. To me it feels like he was lowering the amount to draw more people in.

Scammers using dormant accounts seem to go on a posting spree just before they ask for a loan to get their post count up.  It's a good idea to check the post history and not just the post count.  While some people genuinely don't post very often, it always looks suspicious to me if someone who hasn't posted for months suddenly makes 30 posts just prior to asking for a loan.

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

@OP: I feel compelled to post here on an additional vector that is not often discussed-- inadvertent scamming. Many people who have had all the best intentions (fund operators, business owners, etc) but have been screwed by others due to bets, loans, or just their own bad business practices have been labeled as "scammers" as well. The label itself isn't so important I guess as it is that people may have trusted them, depended on them to pay on a certain time, and were subsequently let down and unable to handle their own finances as a result. This is may not be intentional scamming, but I would say in addition to outright scammers, something to watch out for would be:

  • Talking about work more than they actually work
  • Little preparation involved in the work around the request, but much preparation in the request itself
  • Desperacy
  • Arrogance
  • Ease of assurances / eagerness to give guarantees

In my personal life and in experiences dealing with others, I have found that most of the financial difficulties I've experienced first hand were preceded by one or more of the above. It's obviously not a sure fire list, and many people are just not people persons, but in a community where 13 year olds are trying to run their own "investment funds", and 18 year olds who have been to jail for possession of acid who ask for millions of dollars, it's important to look into these personal qualities carefully.

Disclaimer: I have met more than one of the above at least once in my life and I too have let people down financially more than once in my life.

"Deadbeat" tag

but "scammer" is close enough, barring creating a mutiplicity of tags

perhaps if you wanted to be more politically sensitive, rename it "buyer beware" tag

Temper your trust carefully. "BitCoin never changed human nature, it only removed a few of the leeches."

8. Any user blatantly claiming to be female
Then also
9. Any user blatantly claiming to be male?

Explain? Huh

There may still be hope for the 1st decentralized cryptocurrency which is Bitcoin. How to approach different subjects is key to progress.

9. Any user blatantly claiming to be male?

There actually are females using bitcoin, but it is common practice among scammers to pretend to be females in order to receive more favorable conditions, including using it as a scapegoat for making various mistakes. (read: I'm just a helpless girl!)

To add on to this: regardless of their sex, why would anyone need to announce their gender? You don't see the males of the forum going "Can anyone lend me some BitCoin? I'm a guy, btw Tongue"

People aren't likely to announce that they're a female if they're actually a female. The ones who do are either looking for special attention or are trying to scam people because, as we all know, no male on the internet has ever talked to a woman before. Wink

Also to add onto this, "Straight out of Newbie mode right into Securities (gathering funding for an investment project with high ROI)".

I've seen this happen a couple of times. People have sort of learned their lesson after Pirate, but better safe than sorry I suppose.

And I fit criteria #7 for being a scammer (except for the stolen part).  That's cool.  Do I get an award if I can create a post that matches all eight criteria?

Anyways thanks for the list.

Funny how that works. You get loaned coins and then you suddenly either lose all interest in Bitcoin (and paying back your debt) and/or "forget" your login and create a new account, again not paying back your debt. And I see you haven't logged in for a few days, so I wonder which category you fit into.

Hi.

I am the president of Phi Beta Lambda for my local chapter. I'm also vice-president for PBL on the state level for Colorado. Here's a picture of my local officer team:

We want to raise awareness and create a scholarship in memory of the recent and tragic school shooting in Colorado. This goes towards community service and will be an excellent way to place Colorado on the national PBL map. All of the students (242 active PBL members in Colorado) are excited to move forward with this.

We decided to take a different approach this time. Due to budget cuts across the board in education, many school's student governments are being much tighter with their money; as we are activating new chapters left and right, funding is hard to come by. So, we turn to bitcoins. We are hoping to teach students economic lessons in a real-world environment.

We will be ordering t-shirts and reselling them across Colorado Campuses during high-traffic times. We have previously done this and sold out. Everytime. With food, valentine's goodies, tshirts, wristbands, you name it. We have contacted babbletees.com/ who will give us a discount and produce custom tees for us.

We also plan to raise awareness by creating a database of cell phone numbers and sending out a mass sms message to gently remind students to be kind and caring to one another. The service we selected for this was http://www.txt4coins.net/

I, Chris Dickerson, am asking you help reach our 40 bitcoin goal to fund this excellent endeavor. Any school names cannot be associated due to issues of contracts and liability. However, I can provide any information you need and guarantee that you will see a ROI within two and a half weeks. All I ask is that, in the nature of the project, you consider giving us a low interest rate.

I will provide whatever information you need upon a return message. Thank you for your consideration.

Warm Regards,

Chris Dickerson
Colorado PBL VP

How many successful trades does someone need before being recognized as a trustworthy trader and removed from "pending"?
Does this include OTC or just forum confirmations of reputable trading?
Good question. I put your entry up when you first started posting, but you've been around for a while now with (I'm guessing) some successful trades.

1. New account (usually created within the last 3 months, plus or minus)
2. Low-medium message count with vapid posts of little to no contributatory value

There.  Pretty much in a nutshell how to spot a scammer.  There's still some finesse to spotting a scammer, but these rules will separate most of the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.  Oh, and I guess there's one more rule:

11. Never trust ANYBODY.  Except people who like big butts.  Because they can not lie.

* Account appears to have been abandoned once it was flagged as a scammer, or became apparent he wasn't getting a loan.

Please note that the accounts listed above aren't necessarily or automatically assumed to be scammers. They just fit the description, so to speak.

Examples of posts that fit the pattern that were successful:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137766.0 MoneypakTrader.com (Successful Trades!, Has completed a few successful transactions. As always, use caution, even when dealing with senior members)
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=136132.0 DPony13 (Successful Loan! 2.5 BTC)
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122658.0 xx78213 (Successful Loan! .2 BTC)
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=123728.0 heart_mons (Successful Loan! 5 BTC)
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=134847.0 Jakers (Successful Trade!, iTunes codes)
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=134918.0 polymorphous (Successful Trade! 2.0 BTC)

TLDR: Be careful before you freely give away your coins. From the evidence collected here, you stand substantial chance of getting ripped off if lending to someone who fits the scammer profile.  If that chance is worth making an extra 1-10% on your money, I can't stop you.  But I will laugh at you later Smiley

Changed the color of legit users (ie. ones probably not shell accounts created for the sole purpose of scamming) to green. They are still may "fit the profile," so as usual use caution when doing business with anybody on here.

Changed the color of users who have completed successful trades to green as well.

Money pak trader will be removed from my list. I think he is trust worthy. I have been watching him for months.

Tomatocage will you let me know when you update your list? can you just post added or removed with the names and link and I will edit my list based on that
Why are you using someone else's list and claiming it to be your own?

Thanks for this post - really useful. Can we please confirm this user as a scammer. Was a real noob investing on his loan, we all have to learn don't we Smiley Now I spend a lot more time before investing anything, and I have made back that loss with good loans fortunately,

I'm not a scammer. Take a look at my eBay rep (same name). I'd even be happy to send first with older members.

I sell Xbox cards because I buy them in bulk. Just trying to get into the bitcoin market, too.

8. Any user blatantly claiming to be female
Then also
9. Any user blatantly claiming to be male?

Explain? Huh

Announcing your gender then. Wonder why nobody else could come to that conclusion.

If somebody announces also that they are a vegetarian could that cause any prejudice too? "I can't trust veggies! They are scammers. In the old days we had no freakin veggies, we threw them in the sea"

There may still be hope for the 1st decentralized cryptocurrency which is Bitcoin. How to approach different subjects is key to progress.

HOw scammy does this sound?

BTC-e offered me a first time buyer offer whereby I sent them 8btc to an address on the promise of getting 10btc back for helping to improve traffic.
I was talking via sykpe to "btc-e.support @ europe" and sent the coin last Weds (5 days ago).
I checked my address at the time on blockchain but there was no confirmations there, it's only just occurred to me this might be a scam

Have I been complete tool? Has anyone else experienced this offer/heard of anyone else having done so?

Man I feel sick...

btc-e.support.eu

That is not BTC-E's Skype username. Their support username is btc-e.support. Someone simply made a new account with ".eu" tagged to the end and robbed you. Please be more careful with your internet gold as giving it over to scammers gives them more reason to try.

This genius contacted me on the forums saying that he had bulk btc for sale. He mentions that he has 10,000 BTC asks for international money transfer as payment.

His skype profile says he is from cameroon and only has one skype contact (me).
99,9% this guy is up to no good

His skype username: bitexchanger

Good call. I'll add this one when I get in front of a real computer.

Very useful info. I only joined the forum 3 days ago. Since then I have made about 22 successful transactions for currency exchange. Sadly, another 5 were scammers who stole my payment in various different ways. I will list them when I can discern the right place to do so...Good learning curve, anyway

From an experience I've just had, always be suspicious of people who have taken out several loans at once and they haven't taken steps to repay, chances are it's a grab and run strategy.

On this note, always ask if they can provide collateral.

I seen this guy trying to say you're a scammer, lolz. Had you gone through the reputation thread? Scammer galore.

I have, but it's gotten to the point that it's hard to keep up culling all the potential scammers from honest traders. Can you edit out your quote from me plz? It was just a misunderstanding and I'm going back and editing my knee-jerk responses. Thanks man Smiley

I think the very nature of Bitcoins are an invitation for scammers looking for easy payout.  Glad I read this, thanks for posting.

The number of "old" members scamming seems to be much higher than newbs scamming. I have been scammed by a so called "veteran (Hero Member)" of this forum and I detected 3 more "old member" scammers in just a day of posting in the Marketplace. This forum should have a much better feedback/trust system as right now it seems out of 10 members , 9 are trying to scam (account age no bar)

List the old members here? It's not much use if you don't tell who scammed you.

I left a feedback for him but I am not sure whether other members can see the feedback

No it isn't -- trust me, I've been watching the activity for a LONG time. 99% of all scams are from brand new members (usually less than 3 months old). Occasionally you'll see a 2011 or early 2012 member try to pull off a scam, like Liberty Payout. A number of us have been calling him out from day 1 since he got out of newbie jail, but for some reason he never got a scammer tag.

It's very scary to even think about doing any crypto-currency exchange for hardware. Any time I sent, that sits in the back of my mind, that eery feeling. Takes a lot of time to mine coins with little hardware, and to see the coins vanish is one of my biggest fears. Keep saying, maybe tomorrow will be a better day to trade till you hoarded a ton of coins Cheesy.

There.  Pretty much in a nutshell how to spot a scammer.  There's still some finesse to spotting a scammer, but these rules will separate most of the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.  Oh, and I guess there's one more rule:

11. NEVER DO BACKROOM DEALS VIA PM WITH NEW USERS. Make sure all deals are negotiated in the open forum for both public record and peer review.

Examples of posts that fit the scammer pattern:

TLDR: Be careful before you freely give away your coins. From the evidence collected here, you stand substantial chance of getting ripped off if lending to someone who fits the scammer profile.  If that chance is worth making an extra 1-10% on your money, I can't stop you.

Good list.  (7) with the stolen CC or Paypal is a good point, there was an article about some website where they trade these I read about some time ago.

What is up with hackattack2077? You have him tagged as a scammer but he doesnt have scammer taggs on his profile? Also the link that you provided for reference makes it look like he was the one who was scammed. He also doesnt have any negative trust ratings. Just asking because I was about to do a deal with him yesterday.

I had hackattack2077 flagged as a scammer before it became known that all of his accusers were scammers themselves. Since I don't really have time to keep up with the latest revelations, he remained flagged (on this list anyway) for quite some time until he PM'd me about it.

Wow,jesus christ. I just pmd tomato cage that he forgot to remove the red label of death next to my name on the list and remove me from it totally. This was all cleared up months ago,but I never even looked at the list personally and just saw this now. Its a real shame that reverse scammers even have my fucking name associated with this thread, and it kills me. Ive done over 30k's worth of trades so far on here, and alot of escrow through danny and john, all you gotta do is ask. This one of those things you call a major fuckup/mistake. Im as legitimate as they come folks.

"Any user blatantly claiming to be female."

Well, let me just make it clear that I have posted on a couple of threads asking for gender/sex and I stated that I am female. I'm not a scammer and I'm not here to get bitcoins because I'm a chick.  Angry

I just did a deal with user BTC4Amazon and he tried to scam me out of almost $900. He accepted my money but didn't ever ship anything, and even made up a fake tracking number. I realized later that I should have looked at his trust score. Luckily I made sure to pay with paypal so my claim is currently in with PayPal and I hope to get the money back within 10 days.

Please update your list. You can see the original thread here:

I hope you could remove me from the list... I have had multiple transactions with Xch4ng3  here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=258014.msg2751154#msg2751154

I might have seemed like a scammer before, but i was new then. And im a male lol

Many honest people are being reported by Tomatocage as scammers, myself among them. If you read through his trust feedback by clicking on "Trust", you may draw some conclusions about why he slanders users who might threaten his dealings. His escrow service takes a percentage of your coin. If you are comfortable giving up tithes to him, fine but don't believe for a minute he is the only avenue of a successful transaction. He regularly gives negative trust feedback with the facade of diligence but it is all self serving and you should know this before you dismiss a transaction on his recommendation.

Primecoin [XPM] is being purchased here.

What kind of activity "threatens" his dealings? Not going through his escrow? Going through a competitor?

I personally didn't go through escrow, and after having contacted him regarding the loan I had running, my entry was amended to reflect the completion of that loan.

Make sure all deals are negotiated in the open forum for both public record and peer review.

maybe you could add a number 13 that says

So according to your logic, all noobs = scammers. That can't be right. I am new here. And I intend buying/selling as much bitcoin as I can + other currencies...whenever possible.

I have no intention of posting on topics that dont interest me, just so that I can drive up my post count, niether am I willing to wait for weeks or months before dealing. We all have to start somewhere. All old posters where once newbies.

The Admin/Older posters should find a way of vetting newbies. Maybe make it a rule that noobs go 1st, and also make escrows a must until one reaches a certain  level of trust. If an escrow is enforced, fees should be at the barest minimum to encourage rather than scare off potential users.

Even at this, there are no gaurantees. Ive had experiences in other forums where trusted members turned rougue.Just upped and left with their clients cash. So my advice will be to deal with caution. A little bit of common sense helps. Yes and maybe luck. sometimes you are unlucky to be a victim, but caution will help minimize your loss.

My main argument is that it is wrong to genaralize newbies and lump us all into 1 category. It is akin to saying all muslims are terrorists, that jews are greedy or that black people are lazy. Everyone should be given a chance.

On the flip side you do have some very valid points. Infact most of your points are true. I just dont agree with the generalization. I'l also suggest that after naming and shaming scammers...they should be banned.their ip/mac addresses logged and prevent from using the site. at least make it harder for them  to sign up again. Yes I know its difficult and near impossible. But maybe if those who benefit from this website through their exchanges and trades contribute a little something periodically...it will go a long way to helping police the site.

just my 2 cents

Hi there, just joined the forum. Have been researching Bitcoin for the last three days. Please pardon  me if this is not the right thread of posting this. But I really need some help.
Again I may be very late to the party. But I attended a bitcoin session in India yesterday. The organisers are promising 4.4% returns on BTC every month. So you 'invest'  1 BTC and get 0.1 BTC paid out every month.  The 'contract' is for 18 months so effectively you earn 1.8 BTC for each of your BTC.  They also have some referral schemes etc where you get 5% of BTC when someone else signs up and so on. Typical Multi Level Marketing Kind of stuff.  I have bought my first BTC 3 days ago and am excited about the stuff. But quite confused about whether to trust anyone with my BTC. Because I believe a BTC in your wallet is yours... And as soon as it leaves that...you have nothing. I have searched internet for an hour now the posts here are quite informative seem to make sense (even to me  who is technically challenged-Thank You)  any advise would be great from anyone who has some knowledge please. Also is there a reliable cloudmining website which I can refer to? The organisers above are referring to be using F2pool, is there a way to join/invest in F2pool directly? Again apologies in advance for a random post.

Highly likely a cloudmining scam. F2Pool is a mining pool, the only way to "invest" in it , is by buying a few miners and mining.

Most of the time it's just a matter of common sense. Scammers are pretty obvious and if a deal seems too good to be true then it probably is.

Someone said it elsewhere: the hardcore usage of "sir" and/or "bro" seems to be done by scammers.

I couldn't agree with you more.

This or something similar should be pinned to the digital goods forum, God knows how many people get scammed there.

I was wanting to buy an Antminer S7 4.7TH/s. I've got contacted by BTC909 who's willing to sell me one. But after reading this post. I have my reservations in dealing with him, since, like me, he's also a newbie. Anyone can advise me on how I can purchase an Antminer?

what trading options do I have?

Thanks for the advise.

Use a well known and trusted escrow service (like - for instance - OgNasty, Blazed or PsychoticBoy)...

But - please - first check the user carefully to be sure you have the right one (status, trust, previous posts et cetera).

A popular way of scamming seems to be a newby (yes, noobs again, sorry... but true) who assumes a name similar to a trusted member's name...

There is no certain word that can make you considered as a scammer, therefire using of sir or bro didn't indicate a person as a scammer(usually). Actually, scammers are those who will let you realize that you can get more advantage than with them if both of you are going to deal. They will late you panic, to close the deal in order to make an very swift transaction. Never fall on their traps.
