How always such aggravating posts try to undermine human rights.
In a pseudo scientific way, with some surveys and statistic, they try to stigmatize certain individuals.
Or, it's more like they brandmark them.
Atheists are not condemned persons or individuals, waiting for their time in hell.
They just dont believe that a god-like being has created the universe.
May it be temporary, or on what assumptions, they have the right to do so.
Maybe it is just because of this, and they are obsessional neurotic about telling other people explicitly NOT to believe in any god.
Not long ago people have been persecuted for that, and killed. ferociously. And still this could happen today.
I believe it is more improtant to accept other people's opinion and talk about that, as long as this doesnt instantly cause doom on earth.
Fears and constraints are some of the most powerful motivations. and do not always lead to positive results.

...

KiwiParty I am sorry if I upset you for that was not my intention. Having been an agnostic/atheist for nearly the entirety of my adult life I can assure you that the intent of this post is not to stigmatize or brand. Nor is it some Machiavellian attack on human rights.

This post is about exploring whether adopting a certain philosophical view atheism could potentially be harmful to those who choose to adopt it. I believe the answer to that question is yes. Atheist like everyone else have a right to believe whatever they want. However, they also have a right to be informed of the data highlighting potential pros and cons of that decision.

Atheism can send the wrong message across to people, especially those weaker in faith but brushed off and laughed at by every religious sect out there. It is not a religion, just a group of non believers.
Yes you are right. People should realize that Atheism comes from a lack of knowledge and information and misinterpretation of their understanding of what is and what is not.
But, common knowledge and logical explanations can often decide the battle between a religious sect and an Atheist group.
It is highly ridiculous to disregard the fact that God does not exist when we have some common sense.
You are right. God exists very where. Proof is around us, the mere existence of us humans is one logical reason of believing a creation is created by a creator. Only people without knowledge turns Atheist.

Except you don't need knowledge to believe in something.

The more knowledgeable you are the less religious you are.  The reason is simple: you know.

Only when people don't know, they fill this gap with an irrational belief system.  Not all people, large majority is susceptible to this shortcoming of our brain.

Theistic religions are not alone.  Other ideologies work pretty much on the same level.  Racism, feminism, nationalism, any political dogmas (Communism, Socialism, Capitalism, Nazism etc).
It is much harder to convince an intelligent, knowledgeable person to believe in nationalism or racism.  But a home schooled, Bible thumping redneck will swallow pretty much any BS.

You are right mate but Atheist will prove that you are wrong, they have their very well scientific explanation beyond reasonable doubt that God doesn't exist, and they don't believe to God, so basically base on your comments they are lack of knowledge or fool.  Grin  just like the bible said at  Psalm 53:1 (KJV) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.

Your vision of God is weak and small minded and therefore corrupt. If I was raised in your sect and could find no other truth in your cesspit of ignorance, I would become an atheist too.

How silly of you. You want to go from weak understanding to complete blindness.

Just because you are sick in the head, doesn't mean you have to commit suicide like this. Rather, learn more about God through the only things that teach about Him - nature and the Bible.

Cool

There are some who are only exposed to a weak view of God that when compared to the glory of simple nature, will chose nature over the weak and corrupt.
Their view of God would be of poison. Even if many apparent Theists accept that poison, the true path would be to reject that poison.

If you worship a false idol and claim that as God. Then the correct choice is to worship no idea as God.

The Bible is as corrupted by the many conflicting views as Christianity. God has no religion except himself.
God is not the Bible and the Bible is not God.

If you read the Bible, know that man is fallible.

In addition to understanding God through nature, your whole post here is more or less why theists reject your self-god declaration, which is somewhat hidden in the wording of your post I quoted above.

Cool

Self-god? What do you mean?

You do not seem to be addressing my post.
If one is to be exposed to two falsities, the lesser seeming falsity can be often accepted as truth through ignorance.

Hence many Theists worship a false God out of ignorance, and many Atheists reject a false God out of ignorance.

Although there being only one God, both Theists and Atheists can't but help worship minor aspects of the same true God.
The corruption is present in claiming wholeness within the minor aspect.

Religion is like a comforter you have when you're a baby. Atheism is equally closed minded. The truely intelligent people should be agnostic - unless we know every molecule in the universe and understand every spectrum of reality then it is foolish to reject anybodies idea of life. Stupid people have an easier life, people have already done the hard thinking for them.

Stupid people have an easier life, people have already done the hard thinking for them.

The problem with this approach is that religion is about far more then just abstract understanding. It's primary function is not understanding the universe but defining our purpose in that universe. Agnosticism may not suffer from the cognitive dissonance inherent in hard atheism but it is still a rejection of traditional morality and behavior without defined due consideration.

You can view religion as a moral code given to man by God or as an adaptive co-evolving behavioral code with the most functional the most true surviving to the present day. In either scenario religion would be expected to be highly optimized to promote healthy and sustainable group behavior. Large scale rejection of religion would likewise be expected to unmask unhealthy patterns of behavior previously suppressed.

I would argue that this is exactly what we see today. Much of the ills of modernity can be traced back to the cult of hedonism, personal expediency, and tribalism the 'firmware' of mankind. Indeed the data in the opening post could be looked at abstractly as a restoration of selective pressure on mankind not through violence and war but through hedonism and decadence. Voluntary and gradual euthanasia via pleasure.

In other words, the morality of atheism is, anything goes, as long as you feel like it.

No, I was quoting a post as you are well aware. If you think that quoting a post is the same as posting, then you're an atheist because you've quoted people who are.

How about you just apologise, accept your mistake and move on.

Well, your reply post didn't simply jump up there all by itself, did it?    Grin

So, everything you post you agree with then? Everything in one of your posts you support? This is another example of you painting yourself into a corner and then resorting to more and more bizarre arguments before giving up in a flood of crankiness.

Often I am leery of re-posting things in other peoples posts that I don't agree with. If I re-post them, that doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with them. What about you? You re-posted some of my commenting. That doesn't mean you necessarily agree with what I say, right?

You're making my point for me. You wrote that I posted something, but I'd actually quoted it.

At least I don't lie about the fact that I post other people's things when I re-post their things.

You lie about other people posting things, instead.

Oh, btw, lots of people have pained themselves into corners. They don't all sit their and wait for the paint to dry. Some of them simply paint themselves out over the wet paint.

Cool

Yes, that's what you do. Argue the unarguable and then look silly - that is to say you paint yourself into a corner, and then end up covered in paint.

What's the big deal? You posted the quote. So, you posted it.    Cool

No big deal. I just hadn't realised you were an atheist.

Actually, because my faith in God isn't perfect in this life, I DO have a touch of atheism. In similar ways you have much faith in God, even though you try to deny it. It is inherent in both of us.

Turn, now, while you have the chance, to strengthen the little faith in God that you DO have... so that you can be saved in the resurrection.

An example of this is an atheist who believes all that science theory that is way more fantastic and unbelievable than anything in the Bible. Science theory has not been proven to be true. Science theory might be true, but commons sense tells us that such things as big bang theory, and the theoretical descriptions of black holes, must be utter nonsense. And, when you get down to the cause and effect of them, even science law shows you that many of these science theories ARE utter nonsense.

Atheism religion is way goofier than any Bible religion could ever imagine being.

How many times do I have to say it? and how simple do I have to make it before you can understand?

God has not been proven to NOT exist. Because of this, there is the possibility, at least, that He exists.

The atheist says that God doesn't exist. In the face of the knowledge that God might exist, the atheist makes the bold claim that God doesn't exist. Thus the atheist denies the practical logic of the possibility.

When anybody - especially after much thought about the subject - continues to defy practical logic, not only is he setting himself up as greater than the logic - making himself out to be a god - but also he has a religion going for himself - religion, belief in something not known factually to be true.

The simple, more honest thing that the atheist could do is to stop being an atheist, and say, simply, I don't know.

Once a person becomes truthful enough to move from atheism to become agnostic, then he has the chance to see the proof that God exists.

Everything operates by cause and effect. Everything has been caused to exist the way it does by something else (or many other things) that caused it to exist that way.

Whatever could set the cause and effect in place that would spit out a universe full of intelligence like ours, is way beyond us in intelligence. Since it is intelligent and capable as it is, it fits our term "God."

Many science theories were proven to be a fact.  Earth circles around the Sun, Earth is a sphere as are all other planets in our solar system.  Our solar system circles around center of our galaxy.  We evolved from simpler life forms.  Chemical elements in our bodies come from space, are probably a result of a big bang.

Your common sense, your personal opinions (or mine) do not matter in science.  Verifiable truth is that: truth.

Many science theories have become fact, know as science law.

Big bang is not know to be factual, scientifically. It remains theory.

While the observations prove that black holes are factual, the theory that explains them is known to be the false because of discrepancies with regard to science law.

Evolution as explained by evolution theory is known to not be factual. Cause and effect science law prove this.

While some of the chemical elements in our bodies probably have come from space in the form of meteorite dust and our assimilation of it, it is not a known fact that all material on earth came from space.

Where do you think it came from?  Heaven?  The waters outside the dome?

Of course every chemical element you see on Earth came from space.  Including the elements within us.

Wherever "it" came from, nobody knows factually.    Cool

“It is indisputable that the being whose capacities of enjoyment are low, has the greatest chance of having them fully satisfied; and a highly endowed being will always feel that any happiness which he can look for, as the world is constituted, is imperfect. But he can learn to bear its imperfections, if they are at all bearable; and they will not make him envy the being who is indeed unconscious of the imperfections, but only because he feels not at all the good which those imperfections qualify.

It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, is of a different opinion, it is only because they only know their own side of the question.”

While some of the chemical elements in our bodies probably have come from space in the form of meteorite dust and our assimilation of it, it is not a known fact that all material on earth came from space.

Cool

Where do you think it came from?  Heaven?  The waters outside the dome?

Of course every chemical element you see on Earth came from space.  Including the elements within us.

Wherever "it" came from, nobody knows factually.    Cool
