I don't think we're on the verge of some kind of complete collapse, but that we're just going to have more and more idiots in society as time goes on...  the smart will end up carrying the weak to make sure they can get by.  I'm mostly a socialist and believe that everybody should be well taken care of, but damn, it would be nice if people would at least put some effort into helping society.

There is actually evidence for this. 

Look at your work or school.  Any company, big or small will have 10% stars, 5% walk on water types, the remaining 35% are average (need lots of guidance), the bottom 50% is slowing down the top half.  You cannot fire them, so you keep them, train them over and over, fix problems created by them, and eventually promote them into management (of all things).

I've worked in number of companies, the percentages are always more less the same.

Society will survive.  The smarter ones will just have to work harder to carry the rest.
