nope, select the color when you purchase, multi color screens are too expensive and don't look as good.

A Red text on black background screen was asked for by a customer, it was going to add ~15 USD to the price.

White on black and black on white would be ~3 USD more, but look boring so I don't buy these.

The endpoint is averaged prices from my site - though you are welcome to build your own endpoint and re-point your device.

Its not a RPI, it is ESP8266 chip with LUA code.

If you know LUA or use a bit of google fu you could add sound buzzers, temperature sensors and other things.

There is quite a few GPIO (like 5) left on the chip and one Analog input/output.

I also have code here somewhere to turn it in to a simple NTP clock (no prices), but its hard coded to UTC +10.

Timezones, daylight savings etc suck, this is why it will probably never have a time option, unless someone can find me http://time.is but with a API.

Added,the price is coming from coinbase and bitcoinaverage as well, with such a large value it fills the entire 16 characters on the top line.
If the BTC price triples you will lose the R from PKR.  (I could fix this when it happens though, patch the server to drop the cents)

I would prefer if you buy through the website, if you are buying two add both to the cart and then you will only pay shipping once.

I just ran the calcs, my average price for shipping is 23 AUD, at the moment that its 17.10 USD on xe.com.

I add a small bit for currency fluctuations and you can never find this good a rate.


If you want to order three when I open the site again, got for it ill just bubble wrap them and put in padded bag (no box).

Warning though, the insurance only covers 100 AUD, two device is already ~105 AUD.

Also two devices is already ~300 grams the padded bag has max 500 grams, so probably cant do four.

All orders have shipped out, had a little hiccup last night when my soldering iron broke    

I hit it on the table in frustration and it started working again, crisis averted  

I will be off to the shops this weekend to get a new one.

No more WIFI boards have arrived yet, I had hoped a few might be in the mail so I could get started building the next batch, no such luck.

Also had good news from two customers, they received there devices today!


PS: Blazed I have redone the shipping calcs to the US using Express Post International with two different box sizes the existing methods of sending 2 and 3 devices are included for comparison, the figure at the bottom in each tab in USD is shipping per device.

Good news is I won't run out of LCDs for a while, bad news is I have only got 2 wifi modules (was ordering lots of batches of 2 to avoid shipping). I need the batch of 40 to arrive. I got another soldering iron yesterday so I'm back building the bits I can. Ordered a good Hakko iron that I should get at the end of the week, the cheap one will just be backup.

Everyone who has ordered got a email about an issue setting up the devices with iPhones/iPads with an update link that fixes the issue. Message me if you didn't get it, or have problems updating it. All devices from now on will have this fixed by default.

Had 2 WIFI boards turn up today, this is probably not enough to open orders again. Need one of my larger orders to come in.

After i put in the wifi name and password. It restarts and then nothing happens.
Says connection failed.
Tried on both the ones i ordered. Doesnt seem to go past one step or another.

Weird, do you have any non standard characters in WIFI name or password (like !*/$#\ "  ) ? (though this should be fine (had to put a lot of code to handle this)).

The only other thing I can think of that will cause this is if your WiFi router is set to 5 GHz?

Try change it to 2.4 GHz, or if your router supports it add a guest 2.4 GHz network.


Edit: the obvious cause is typo in SSID or password, but I assume if you tried for that long you have it correct.

Edit2: It also expects the router to assign IP via DHCP.  If you turned DHCP off turn it back on or try get to the devices MAC address when you connect with phone and map MAC to IP in router (fixed host).

Edit3: same train of thought, if you have mac address filtering turned on in the modem, your modem will block the device.

Edit4: perhaps try closer to WiFi router, I have never had any range issues but my place is smallish.


Note: Before that Connection Fail message it has tried to connect 20 times, so its not for lack of trying

I checked the router and it is 2.4 ghz and also there is no mac address being rerouted.
For some reason it is not accepting the ssid info or not connection to it.
What do you think i should do.

P.s: this is the only step that i didnt do in the setup. Select this message and then be sure to press YES or the phone will drop back to cellular networks.
That is because it never asked me to. It just connected without and issue.
Do you think this has something to do with it ?

yes simple wifi ticker screen, you could add things if your a programmer/electronics guy there is plenty of GIPO

I had info from a customer who also backed Tixie, they took the money from backers and ran.  (or a very very slow at processing the refunds)

For Australian customers, its probably easier if you order through the site (when I set back to in stock) and I just refund ~5 USD (of the 17.50 USD)  (express shipping and GST payed out the rest of shipping cost)

Eventually I will put a button to swap to AUD.

Yeah, we don't have that. You need to pay import tax on everything above ~€25, which this is. Worst thing is that local post companies charge somewhere between €11 and €17 because they paid upfront for you. That's some insane fee's.

The Netherland and yes, it sucks. I mean, I don't mind paying VAT on expensive items (phones, high end coins, etc), but for this it's quite excessive (it increases the unit price by 41.37%).

Alright, I've picked up the device and it looks pretty sweet. However, what can I do to disable the altcoin section and show the Bitcoin price in USD and EUR? Can the screen be dimmed?

I can change the remote endpoint to fix BTC as a alt to USD, Then you can put EUR in the currency box and BTC in the alt box. Shouldn't be to hard ill look at it tonight.

The little black plug on the left side turns off the backlight, the code can only also turn on and off the backlight.

If you removed the little black plug (jumper) and put a  potentiometer as a Variable Resistor the screen light would dim.
(think my little brother made this mod to his own one)

Well, do whatever is needed.

Turning the backlight off is good enough for now, but I guess I could replace the jumper. I do have a shitload of Arduino stuff laying around.

Compared to what? A Kialara bar? A f*D bar? Should I measure it for you? Whatcha want?

I implemented this change just then.  Putting BTC in Altcoin box now gives USD


Also replacing zero with capital O so that there is no diagonal line in it on the display now.


NOTE: these things are hard to photograph properly, the back-light makes the background dark at night.

Glad you got your package Mitchell.

Small tip: I have attached a small mobile charging battery back to the device and was surprised with the outcome.
One charge to the battery pack and it has been 4 days without the need to recharge it.
The battery consumption of the device is so low that it keeps going on.

It makes it easy to carry the ticker with me anywhere. Have a wifi device connected in the second port of the battery pack. It looks kind of funny but hey does the job and i dont have to keep checking my phone

I did do some testing on battery with something like this

I was only getting 7 hours, perhaps because it was a old battery pack.

Have the notification mode set to stars on battery, when the battery is flat the WiFi is the first to go and it gets stuck on a price. At least with stars you will see when to charge it.

Edit: this was before the watchdog code, I bet it reboots every 5 minutes when it gets flat now.

Just got mine way way cool...have not got them up yet..but they are BIGGER then I thought...will have to pay more attention to dimensions

you need to make mod where a person could say put

in say TWO BTC addresses in (or LTC or whatever)

and the 1st line would show say BTC price

and the 2nd line would show your combined HOARD price from the public blockchain address

hell I'm gonna have to buy 2 more anyway......that would kick it up to maybe 4 more with this angle


anyway will save my pennies and get on the list again

I got mine today as well - I was out of town, so it actually arrived a few weeks ago (faster than I expected).  Really quite cool - and the way you have the esp setup to configure is very clever.  Definitely a fun piece of geek-ery to have around the house...

I need to upgrade to the newer version I think, although I don't see any issues with the one I have.  You should consider adding the version number on the admin page, just to make it clear what is what.

I looked through the thread and your docs - what exactly is the difference between 'Stars' and 'Backlight' on the update notification?  I'm assuming with backlight you toggle it on or off, but not sure what stars are - I turned it on, but nothing seems to happen...

I think I just answered my own question - I was watching it and asterisk's appeared on the far left and right edges of the display, so presumably that was indicating it was going out and fetching data.

I implemented backlight mode first but found it too distracting while watching TV.

Most of the device patches have been for the setup page when using Safari on iPhone/iPad.

oh and the first one made the altcoin configurable, fairly obvious if you have this or not because of altcoin box in the setup page.
