I'm not against KYC per se, just against this KYC everywhere trend which, like OP suggested, is dangerous as long as it can have a negative impact in privacy.

Personal data protection is not an absolute right, and isn't applied if "higher" interests are at stake. So KYC for withdrawing just a few bucks you won somewhere or apply for the last airdrop is not worth the risk of leakage. But in cases where big money is involved and there are clear suspicions about criminal activity behind them like in this case, it makes sense.

Aside from the privacy thing, another major reason most people don't do KYC is because of the whole KYC process. Most Casino KYC process are stressful and time consuming, not many have that patience to submit details and upload documents where needed. Alot of gamblers who have  done KYC only did that because that was the only way to claim their wins. Just maybe if this issue is addressed, KYC wouldn't be a problem to those who do not care about their privacy.

This just crossed my mind - what if that guy uploaded a different ID, maybe a stolen one, or even from people who are desperate to make a few bucks and allowed their info to be used? That's really sad. It makes me think, for those of us who’ve submitted IDs online, especially during the time when bounties were all very popular, it’s actually pretty risky if what I’m thinking could happen to us.

The Nigerian government have done a good job regarding the National Identity Number. This unique number has to be connected to your bank account, phone number and Bank Verification Number. Without this NIN it will be impossible to carry out any financial transaction. He cannot just submit a random ID because it will not tally with the phone number he used to register with the sports betting company. Even if he registered with another phone number he would have to provide another NIN and such registration needs his picture and fingerprints. His best option was to ask for cash payment because this is how most kidnapers get their ransom in Nigeria.    

Hmm, I get it. When I was thinking of my reply, I was comparing it to the situation in our country where we have a lot of valid IDs. Just two years ago, we started adapting to a national ID system, but even now, not everyone has one, so other forms of IDs are still valid for transactions. I initially thought Nigeria had a smaller population, but after doing some research, it turns out you have around 220 million people this 2024, which is double our population.

It is true that today almost all services related to crypto or finance require identity verification to be able to use their services for the client. Today this is already a common reality, I admit that I am also not happy about this and sometimes I simply refuse to use a new service if I understand that I will not use it for a long time, then I do not want to go through verification there once again. And for someone this does not cause any discomfort, everything is personal.

In certain contexts, we do want to protect our privacy. KYC on casinos or other crypto platforms is considered contrary to the principle of crypto which is a transaction that maintains privacy and security. with KYC, there are parties who feel they benefit but there are still those who feel uncomfortable.
In the case shared by Op, it shows that there is a positive side to KYC. but there will still be loopholes that can be exploited by people who are planning to commit crimes.

For sure, getting paid on a wallet that is not yours explains clearly how this criminal was not having the minimum idea on crypto... for sure not the expert on this matter... probably this user will just use a centralized exchange for these cashouts...

Ok even KYC in a rare case can be helpful, but is it really that essential or is it simply another tool for controlling expenses and earnings?
