Not for selling black cat in a pocket!

Can you explain that proverb? It's weird and I'd like to use it but i have no idea what it means.

<lol>

My best guess is that it would be similar to a "pig in a poke".

It means in Russian selling something that isn't really exists.

Like vapourware? Sweet. This will be my new favourite proverb with which I can confuse my friends.

I do love Russian proverbs, especially naima53's grandfather's proverbs. For example:

I hope that will not happen. But my grandfather said, "If the elephant pushes to itself in an ass the trunk - Means Somebody wishes it"

Interestingly, I've never heard "pig in a poke" either. It's also not nearly as weird as "black cat in a pocket".

We have the exact same expression in German: "die Katze im Sack" = literally "the cat in the bag".

A "poke" is an old English slang for a bag.

It is all the same concept.

Look in the bag / container to verify what you're getting before you pay for it.

-- edit

I looked up "pig in a poke" when I once asked an older programmer to provide verification/validation that the code he was supplying actually performed to the level he stated. His response was "I bet you wouldn't buy a pig in a poke, either.". And then he went off and wrote / provided the unit tests proving his assertions.

"Trust, but verify."

I'll just leave this here:

If you guys want some background on this... Micon came by our booth yesterday and started stomping around (literally, like a little kid throwing a tantrum) and screaming foul language at one of my employees "IS THAT JUST A FUCKING BOX OF FANS?! ARE YOU EVER GOING TO FUCKING SHIP ASICS?  ITS JUST A BOX OF FUCKING FANS!" over and over.  Needless to say, we did not want a repeat of his behavior today.

The lovely anti-semite "joke" he tried to tell me at the end of our encounter was also classy.  I don't know if he thought I was Jewish or what?

If you're searching these lines for a point, you've probably missed it.  There was never anything there in the first place.

No, he thought you were dumb. Which you are.

He in fact is Jewish. Hence he can't make anti-semite jokes. Only funny jokes. Grin

Oh boy, the same guy who made the piracy issue with at least one subset of Asians and the other crack [to me] about moping floors (just because I was of Hispanic descent?)

Cultural sensitivity? He's never heard of it apparently.

Can you point out where I made an IP crack about a subset of Asians... or are you saying you're so stupid you can't even distinguish between a country and it's laws and a race?  I'm betting the latter.  I didn't know you were Hispanic, I figured you couldn't even mop floors because you're too stupid to figure out that a country is not equal to real, live people... and things of that nature that you continually demonstrate that you're unable to understand what basic 1st graders grasp intuitively.

It was just posted on some BFL blog. The Jewish Vegan, the quarter, and the BFL reps comment.
