It was my impression that you do NOT need to send them any coins to get your upgrade. If you wanted to send them coins as collateral for your upgrade while you ship the old Single back, you can.
No, you don't need to but they won't ship your ASIC until they receive your FPGA if you don't (they obviously don't trust users as much as they expect users to trust them).
Won't they also give you like a week ahead of time to ship your FPGA before they start shipping ASICs? I believe the BTC collateral was more for international customers where 7 days may not be enough time to ship your FPGA to them without costing an arm and a leg.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Yep, they've said they'll give at least a week's notice which is why that should be a good indication that shipping is actually imminent.

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

4. Receive 100 FPGA back, send them to other 100 ppl
5. Offer them update, take money
6. Receive back 100 FPGA, dissapear

2 problems with this:

1) BFL has stopped selling the old FPGA Singles, and AFAIK, they don't have any outstanding orders.

2) BFL hasn't received any FPGA Singles to count towards the ASICs. I myself have an upgrade from a Single to a SC Single, but I'm still hashing away on the FPGA Single until the actual hardware is released.
1) coz they don't have singles at this moment
2) but they will ask to send them singles not far in future

Another variant.

1. Make money on fpga sales
2. Research ASIC technology for that money
3. Open pre-orders, pre-payments
4. Receive 100500 chips from China
5. Get 100500 THashes in chips, say goodbye to all
6. Mine to the end of life on Bahamas

Btw, did anyone sign any legit contract for landing them money for months?

You seem to be missing some steps..

7. Everyone leaves Bitcoin
8. The value of a Bitcoin plummets to 0
9. Mining is suddenly 100% worthless

8. The value of a Bitcoin plummets to 0
9. Mining is suddenly 100% worthless

7. Not everyone, only some of the miners, miners who are a minority (but still large) of the bitcoin users. Someone who buys on Silk Road does not care who is mining.
8. Why? Value of a Bitcoin  drops significantly, but not to 0. After a few months back to normal again.
9. Home/amateur mining will be suddenly 100% worthless.

If ASIC comes, it will contribute to the centralization of bitcoin mining. It's just a matter of time. Huge mines GPU probably would not be cost-effective or impossible (very expensive , problematic power consumption, a lot of heat - need a lot of air conditioners, cost of the hall rental, cost of security and service, etc.). Huge ASIC mines is not a problem.

More and more people at BFL forums get pissed off and demand information. Josh/Inaba always replies in the same way: "Yes, of course I can add a sticky thread. Yes, of course I can add a banner. ... Yes I can!"

Only he doesn't do it. As usual - nothing happens.

I (and most of the folks at BFL forums) seriously don't understand why. Makes no sense at all ...

Are you also left wondering why they haven't yet asked FPGA customers to start sending their trade-ins yet?

Wink

Or

Are you also asking yourself why they haven't given Yochdog or Kano any notice on when to board the plane?

Or

Are you left wondering why they haven't said anything that leads up to a shipping date in the next 15 days?

why? Smiley Try feel in his role. How he has to tell people about the next shipment delay so as not piss off people. This requires a lot of time and focus.
