I do not possess the technical knowledge to have much of an opinion on this subject but I know a lot of forum members probably have some interesting ideas regarding the development of quantum computing and what effect it will have on cryptography.

Will it render cryptography as we know it obsolete?

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

BTW

Is there like a really dumbed down primer on cryptography available? Something for people with very little higher math skill but would like to learn more?

http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/10/a-relatively-easy-to-understand-primer-on-elliptic-curve-cryptography/

Parts of it may be difficult depending on your background, but the first page has a nice, simple example.
