OMG it's modular we're all gonna die!

Looking at the image of this ASIC gives me just about the same feeling as when I first saw the Chinese "fake hard drive" Cheesy

For the record, I obviously don't think the ASIC is fake. I just think it's cheap looking Wink

Cheap looking? No, think "industrial" and "anonymous". You plonk this down in your house and when a mate notices you say, "yeahhhh, I do computer work for the NSA occasionally".

So... if WalletBit is the processor for Batch #2, is there anything potential customers should do ahead of time to make checkout faster?

I think I plan to be booted into a clean browser on a hard connection to 100Mb symmetric connection... but if I have to create an account or make bitcoin transfers into WalletBit first I'd like to get that setup ahead of time.

While I am glad to see Jeff receive his unit and hope it's wonderful for him, these second batch terms are just insane to me.  Even if I *could* afford to pay in BTC only, there's the concern of absolutely no refunds at all that just bothers me.

I think I'll stay with a competitor, thanks.

Oh Loaded, who art up in Mt. Gox, hallowed be thy name!  Thy dollars rain, thy will be done, on BTCUSD.  Give us this day our daily 10% 30%, and forgive the bears, as we have bought their bitcoins.  And lead us into quadruple digits

Avalon doesn't want to assume the risk. They're not in it for the Bitcoins, they're in it for the money. If they were going to bet on the future of Bitcoin, they would be mining themselves instead.

It could be argued oppositely (and I think I've detected Avalon trying to do so...)  Probably the best thing for the health of the Bitcoin project would be if ASIC gear comes onto the market at a slow and steady rate and gets distributed in some fraction to relatively responsible and disparate parties.

Right, but the point is that they can't risk a heap of speculators suddenly cancelling their orders. They'd be stuck with an inventory of ASICs that will never sell to anyone if they let people cancel at any time and there was a sudden mad dash to exit Bitcoin. The investor assumes the risk for the investment. That's how it should be. It would another matter if Avalon couldn't ship in time or didn't manage to make a working product - then I think you'd be entitled to a refund. You're not entitled to a refund if Bitcoin crashes - that would be the free market's fault, not Avalon.

http://launch.avalon-asics.com/

seems to have been down for at least an hour

------------

There appears to be an error with this site.

If you are the site administrator, here are a few things you can do:

Redeploy the app in the Dashboard (Deploy Latest).
Ensure there are at least 2 web instances for redundancy.
Submit a ticket recording the error and outcome of Actions 1 & 2.

-----------

any word on the "secret thing" that is already on board that the site talked about?  expandability?

They have several it seems.

So far it seems Jeff has identified at least one.

----------------------

The site error is probably them updating the site for the second batch pre-orders.

Hopefully when people bum rush the site it won't go down again.

Wasn't it scheduled for 9am?

Hey! DDoS'd.

I guess this means we now matter.

p.s.
this is not a problem at all, nothing to worry about.

I checked http://garzikrants.blogspot.com/ and https://twitter.com/jgarzik
is he posting somewhere else?  what was the one thing he identified?

and yes, i thought it might have been due to updating but it was/is down for a while. plus i think any info is important to us right now when trying to make a $1500 decision Smiley

So, we have a problem. Avalon need the money before this weekend starts to place orders for the parts. For those unbelievers, let's hope Jeff receives his unit before batch #2 starts selling on EST 9:00 AM, January 31st, 2013.

The spec is 6.6 ~ 6.7w per Gh/s. Speed is greater than 60Gh/s, batch size is 600, each unit is $1,500, payment gateway is provided by WalletBit, units will ship starting March 6th to April 5th, 2013.

So, I have a debit card with USD available, and I might want to be a part of this endeavor.  How do I get the BTC and send them quickly?

I try to be respectful and informed.

If you weren't pointed at it before, use a 60 seconds dns ttl and use cloudflare.

My anger against what is wrong in the Bitcoin community is productive:
Bitcointa.lk - Replace "Bitcointalk.org" with "Bitcointa.lk" in this url to see how this page looks like on a proper forum (Announcement Thread)
Hashfast.org - Wiki for screwed customers

Yep, all eyes are on you at the moment!!  Smiley

Are you shipping units daily?  I think I read that you were shipping 12-20 a day?

Also, since you are better at meeting (and exceeding) shipping estimates, unlike your competitors, perhaps offering refunds if customers do not have their product in hand by XYZ date would put a rest to some of the concerns people have expressed.  I would assume that at this point you have a good idea how long it will take you.
