Jest read about the background of Avalon here: https://bitcoinfoundation.org/blog/?p=112

Is this true, some 23 your old called Yifu Guo is behind the Avalon ASIC? If so... what a fucking hero eh?

Impressive stuff, soon to be richly rewarded.

I believe he is. He could use a bit better PR however. I understand how he got annoyed at the forums calling him a scam despite shipping 2 models to 2 credible source but that's the forums for you.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I honestly don't think he needs better PR.  Batch 2 will sell out completely.  Every single unit.  Any time/money/effort spent on PR is a waste as people will still find a reason to doubt it, or call it a scam.

A good product sells itself.  If Avalon is a good product (and everything so far indicates it will) he should just focus on getting units shipped, ensure good quality control, and resolving problems/failures.  THAT will bring in the coins.

Generally speaking the companies that spend the most on PR are those who either have an inferior product or are in a highly competitive environment where they can always produce more than they can hope to sell.

I'm not saying it won't sell, but it reflects poorly upon the Bitcoin community when legit companies themselves behave like some of the forum members here. A person just getting into Bitcoin might get scared off at the sheer lack of professionalism displayed by the PR people. I'm getting used to it, but I'd imagine people will get scared thinking that Bitcoin is such an unforgiving hobby to get into.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I'm wondering what makes you think that Bitcoin needs more miners. It appears that the current pipeline is good enough at removing the capital from the newbies that no further improvement is necessary.

If you disagree with me, go help the newbie wannabe miner QualitySeeds that literally begs on the Technical Support forum to be ripped off by someone solicitious and polite.

I agree 110% with 2112, the community doesn't need any more miners. Also Yifu Guo isn't a hero, he is a regular guy that created a great mining component, and was out the door first. Over the coming months and years we will see if his product is truly is the best as more and more come to market.

I think a big issue with the community is that we hold too many people on a pestle, and we really shouldn't. This community is so young that so many people are going to be the first to do so many things, we really can't call them heros. I think it is great that a 23 year old kid (same age as me) created something that has a big impact on the community but to call him a hero that is really stretching it.

Because it is exactly what it is.

Too agree. It seems to me that many people just don't want to stretch their imagination beyond mining.

But to stay on the topic, yes, Yifu Guo really did something extraordinary.
