What is Open Source Protocol?

Can anyone answer this question for me? I searched for a good description but can't find one. I want to know exactly what open-source protocol is and how it is used by Bitcoin. A link would be great as I'm sure someone has already answered this somewhere. Thanks!

Generally, open source refers to a program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design. Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community. Open source sprouted in the technological community as a response to proprietary software owned by corporations.

Look at the definition of "Scholar." It means either someone who knows much about something or someone who is in the process of learning about something. Thanks, however.
