I'm currently running different linux os'es mostly on my boxes, I was wanting do dabble into trying something new entirely on a small server I'm installing. Looking at BSD and possibly want to try one of those, but is there something else that I could have a look at that maybe I don't know about ?
It should be reasonably secure and free software.

Elementary is just good looking Ubuntu. (With release date similar to BFL SC ) I'd not call it obscure. However Plan 9, the so-called successor of Unix can be interesting.

SparrowOS is not what you want, but it has lots of innovation and was made by a paranoid schizophrenic genius. Just avoid reading his non tech essays, it is absurdly bizarre

I couldn't remember the name of it, just googled BeOS and posted the wiki link. Thanks for posting that. Don't know if any of the kids remember BeOS from the day, but it sure had a lot of potential until Palm got their hands on it.

I haven't tested latest alpha but apparently it now supports WPA2, which was the only thing I was missing. If you have an old 32-bit laptop lying around, this will make it fly.

Nearly functional:
Haiku (the present incarnation of BeOS) Syllable (the latest incarnation of AtheOS, a Unix-like system) SkyOS (Unix-like, now defunct, was developed through v.5.0, some software ported) ReactOS (a Windows-like system) AROS (Amiga-like system) eComstation (OS/2 clone)
Experimental:
Oberon/Bluebottle (truly like nothing else, but no software written for it.)
Hobby/toy systems (generally developed by lone coders, no software support:)
MenuetOS ForthOS Visopsys DexOS KolibriOS
Concepts:
Croquet Unununium (abandoned attempt, but interesting)

I like JoliOS
Its a semi cloud OS based on Linux
Most Linux distros are getting too bloated, but Joli has got the balance right between light and useful!

Also of course the Hurd!
Damn it I wanted to post that. Of course the Hurd. Anyone who wants to experiment with exotic OS should try hurd. Also Haiku. Never managed to make it run but it seems interesting.

Also, don't bother with Linux, it's a lousy counterfeit of Unix. :p Maybe my sarcasm detector is broken though.
