Not SWIFT was hacked, but the banks firewall (old tech)...

Check out the article. The compromise went deeper than originally thought, and modified SWIFT issued Alliance Access software. SWIFT pushed a patch today.

But how did the malware get into the bank computers?

I would bet they were targeted by guys who had already hacked other banks.
Russian organized crime are powerful dude.
They have LOTS of money and resources and have deadly hackers.
Once they decide to target you your screwed.. bank or not.

Just google some variations on the keywords like, Russia Bank Hack

So i would be guessing it's the same people behind it as other banks already hacked before.

All kinds of weird stuff out there..
I had heard a couple years ago now that most bank ATM's around the world
are running a variant of Windows XP.. hell the White House was still using XP when Win8 came out.
And as a hacker / cracker you look for the weakest point in the system to exploit.

This is great for bitcoin. Won't do much for the price in the short term, but you can bet this will make the banks take an even closer look at btc.

How much money does swift transfer daily or weekly?

Could lightening network be used for something like Swift?

The hackers would have definitely struck before, but the bangladeshis seem to have made their job easier.

Swift is just that: allows transferring money from one account of a bank to another account on another bank

I know what SWIFT is. Im from Europe.
My question was why would a central bank have the option of ordering swift online?
There was either an interception to a previous SWIFT message, or, perhaps someone on the inside provided the message and hackers sent it anonymously.

Swift transaction is an email sent from a bank server to its mainframe which verifies the electronic message and executes the transaction in it.
The message itself would make sense to no human.
However it should contain amount of cash to be transferred as well as bank account data.

its not a matter of if
its a matter of when

I am trying to conclude why we are surprised by this.  There is so much corruption in the world today, you should expect things like this to happen and the governments to blame anyone they can blame just so they do ot have to take care of the issues.  So Sad.

An in-house cooperation could be involved in the hacking. One of the personnels could have been tricked into being an accomplice.

for a second I thought you meant BitSwift!  I was shocked that a crypto currency would be hacked!

Seriously though, this is a win for crypto in general.  Once people understand their money is more secure in BTC than in fiat currency, BTC will moon.   Smiley
