I'm relatively new to watching Bitcoin charts and I've been seeing something very strange in the Chinese trading that I don't understand and frankly looks like some kind of market manipulation to me. But I want to ask to see if there is some other explanation.

This is the kind of thing I'm talking about:

https://s28.postimg.org/6xxb8t465/crop1.gif

The price will go straight up, like instant vertical wall, and then stay up around there for a bit, and then crash for about the exact same amount all at once again just a little while later.

I've seen this several times recently and always on the Chinese market. Can someone tell me what is going on here?

I just realized I probably should have posted this in the "Beginners & Help" section. Maybe a moderator can move it for me?

i think this post is okay here in the trading discussion. that thing you have observed is nothing new. i have seen it all even on polo and trex. its better to just earn bitcon and not trade at all. if you ever put real money into it just put a small amount that you can afford to lose. bitcoin can drop to whatever value tomorrow and we cannot do anything about it.

I realize that prices can go up and down and that I take a risk by investing in Bitcoin. But I have never seen anything in any stock market like a straight vertical line representing a jump in price of hundreds of yuan in a very short amount of time... and then maybe a couple of hours later or so it falls right back down to where it was before, but yet the sudden drop in price seems to encourage further selling off. I've seen it happen multiple times lately and that's what makes me think this is some kind of manipulation.

People talk about fake volumes of Bitcoin sells coming out of China. Is this what that looks like on the charts? This is only happening on the Chinese market.

I might go back and take more screenshots later if people need more examples of this to investigate.

Here are a couple other incidences of this I pulled off of the charts of Chinese trading:

https://s29.postimg.org/w9628t6kn/jan7.gif

https://s29.postimg.org/upwpitemf/dec12.gif

The chart from the OP was from earlier today. The first one in this post is from January 7th. The last one, from December 12-13, shows a sharp rise that took place in a little over a minute, and then you see when it came crashing back down about 2 hours later it went a lot deeper than back to its previous level.

The same is visible in the other two charts, that when these "mini bubbles" (for lack of a better word, because I have no idea what is causing these) burst, they cause more selling to take place, so the chart dips even more than where it was originally. Also notice that right after the sharp rise in purchases, when the price suddenly shoots up, it is also inspiring more buying that takes a more natural-looking curve before the sell-off begins.

People talk about large volume trading and I'm still wondering, is this what it looks like on the charts? Or wtf is this? Whatever it is, it's happening in China but not in the American markets, at least that I've seen so far.

looks like some kind of market manipulation to me.

you realize that manipulation in cryptos is legal, and that the reason it is ilegal in traditional markets is that it is done a lot?
If you trade cryptos you have to trade the manipulations.

Oh. I think thats why they say that theres a market manipulation on the volume. Well, it looks like theres a manipulation because the price just goes up fast. No wonder why pboc is alertened and create an investigations which cause if panic selling of traders. The chart is strange. The straight line is unbelievable.

These Chinese exchange investigations is good for Bitcoin. People that dumped causing the price to drop, were afraid of any legal repercussions. Or the Chinese government was afraid of the Yuan tanking, and created FUD to persuade speculators.

The value of Yuan goes up 1% and everyone dumps BTC. Even though BTC was up 100% for the year.

Yes, i agree with you. It since 2012 that i say that exchanger could manupulate BTC . So investigation is needed not only on china, but over the world

This means instability and this is bitcoin one of the most unstable currency
And thoso who are in the trading world this is the perfect scenario to generate more profit than with stocks or with fiat.

The term unstable definitely will give different interpretation from "most fluctuating" currency. Because on the other hand, bitcoin performed well in 2016 to top as best performing currency of 2016.

Fluctuations are just part of any trade-able commodity and with bitcoin is always common. We need not worry about current fall as bitcoin  prices will be expecting to bounce back once new government in US sworn in. In simple words, that chart shows big trading opportunities of bitcoins.

There is no need to suspect about the future and stability of bitcoin just due to this.

Well, it was but not for a long time, even though it may look to us for a long time, but in general, bitcoin is unstable.
From this we can conclude that Bitcoin price will be higher too in the near future (as it is increasing at the moment).

Bitcoin is likely used as capital flight in China, meaning someone converts YUAN --> BTC and then converts BTC --> to another currency in another country within a short period of time.

So that bubble up and bubble down might be this mechanism at work.

I don't really think this is market manipulation, trading forex or Gold have huge volume unlike Bitcoin with light volume when compared forex and gold volume. Also most of these trades are done by bots so those charts are possible

No unusual is going on. It's just that people are being carried away when there is some room for opportunity. There are some factors like that Chinese matter or what but the price movement depends on traders own view. Some are securing profits and some are minimizing the loss. In trading there are types of traders like; profit takers, hodlers, weak hands etc. If you saw some straight line going up or down "IN A MATTER OF SHORT PERIOD OF TIME" then definitely it's a succesfull result of a panic being made by those who has some big balls in their precious hands.

This is how price volatility in bitcoin works.

Which means on this chart above showed it is saying that the price value of bitcoin will decrease? And in some other way the chart in every exchange platform is helping the trader about if bitcoin price will get increase or decrease. Well with that thanks for the information this will be a big help for me.
