Quote from: From the article:
Have you amassed a wealth of Bitcoins, perhaps through some lucky winnings in your local Bitcoin casino? There's a new place to spend them — all-around Bitcoin guru Roger Ver has just launched his new venture, the creatively-named Bitcoin Store.

I do not quite understand where the hostility towards Bitcoin and Bitcoin users that I see in so many comments under different articles comes from. It seems like some people try very hard to discredit Bitcoin in any way possible.

Is it really true that BTC is widely used to purchase child porn? I see that accusation thrown around a lot, but are there any sources to back that claim up? I think not?
Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

I don't really know, but I doubt that it is used more than any other currency.

Despise that, using that as point against bitcoin is ridiculous.

A protocol can't be good or evil. It just is. I heard Email is mostly used for spam and sending viruses. Email makes it just to easy for this spammers, they can use it almost anonymously. Email is evil.  Angry

All previous versions of currency will no longer be supported as of this update

So why does Hacker News like bitcoin or at least neutral about it and other sites hate bitcoin?

I have the impression that in most comment sections, there are usually no more than 2 or 3 VERY outspoken individuals who dominate the discussions by quickly throwing out as many arguments against Bitcoin as possible. They seem to prefer quantity over quality. They also often use the typical vocabulary like "buttcoins" etc. that was introduced by the SA forums, which has always had a vendetta against Bitcoin. Maybe that is where they are coming from, i don't really know.

It is really true that cash is widely used to purchase child porn. I never see that accusation thrown around, but there are many sources to back that claim up.

Which will get you downvoted quick. Trolls don't live very long there.

If you remember 1992, all the internet was good for (for those who had even heard about it) was porn and illegal stuff.

I can't be bothered to unearth the thread right now, but a recent survey among Bitcoin users shows just a small fraction actually use it for porn/drugs/illicit stuff. Most use it as a speculative vehicle or for regular, day to day transactions.

Simply general difficulty in accepting something new.

There may still be hope for the 1st decentralized cryptocurrency which is Bitcoin. How to approach different subjects is key to progress.

The Verge, Slashdot, Arstechnica are techy as much as Hacker News. Slashdot was the first to cover bitcoin, even. Yet, the evolution of their views are different.

I have no idea. If anyone makes the claim ask what price they paid. Game over.

Maybe you misunderstood me.

I fully agree that it is dumb to complain about how people use any currency.

I was just mentioning a possible tactic that could be used in response. If you ask them for any detail they will admit that their source of info is very week, not first hand, not second hand, not verified, etc.
