Just ordered one. Wondering what power supplies people are using in the states?

Thanks guys!

I suspect that the bitmaintech psu is just a tiny bit short to run an s-9

it does need 210 or more volts so if in USA you need correct voltage wires.

now if you are looking for an ATX 120 volt option EVGA has them  but they are costly

How many of the Bitmain APW3's have you tried out? Through my testing I have 1 remote connected to a APW3 and one now at my place connected to an APW3 and not having issues with them.

What way are you testing the APW3 to determine they are coming up short?  I have been testing by running the units with them so wanted to what tests you were using to get this. Just trying to compare as we seem to be getting different results.

I have personally purchased and have been using 30 of the Bitmain PSUs with no issues so far.  The rest of my miners have been on rental PSUs.  I would say that over the time of 9 months is a very good track record.

I too have had good luck with the APW3 PSUs.  I've had 20 of them over the past.  I currently have 10 of them connected to a relay/raspi setup to remotely power cycle the miners.  I'm using a combo of wiringpi and webiopi.  Working very well.

And re-reading through it I want to make sure it is known I am not meaning to come across rude with questions, I hate that email/posts don't show emotion like talking.

I just have had a good experience with APW3's in past with S7's and now with two S9's.   So I would hate for people to start thinking APW3's are coming up short when in fact many of us are having good luck with them.   And considering the S9 was designed to run off of them and is recommended PSU I think it should not come up short.

Again my testing is done by running 2 S9's off APW3's.  If someone has done a test with them showing and ran into problems specifically with APW3 please share it, I just have not seen real test's showing it.  I am just one person so I realize small scale test,  but I have not had any issues with them.

to further clarify it may be the 3 people that I based this on are using

 hp dps1200 psu's not  bitmaintech 1600 watt psu's

as one of the three people have received info from their it/data center that the psu is a dps1200  not a 1600 watt bitmaintech as they first told me.

the dps1200 is specced at 1200 watts using 240 volts and would certainly be more likely to be short then the bitmaintech 1600watts psu. specced at 1600watts.

I bought one B3 unit and noticed an exception from UPS. Apparently I owe $46.53 in duties. I'm in California.

I told UPS that I've bought similarly priced units from Bitmain before and never had to pay duties. The UPS service person told me that Bitmain must have paid the duties previously, but did not this time.

I know that Phil got hit up for duties too, but the thinking was that he had two units shipped at the same time (even if they were different orders). Maybe Bitmain is pushing the duty cost onto us now and didn't before?

Seems inconsistent to me. And very irritating...

kind of obvious... do they want to pay $46 in fees themselves OR do they want to lose, say, 20-30% in shipment volume due to irritated buyers.
I rather buy 0.1 BTC more and NOT order. I assume that many will do the same, but who knows.
Also, why shipment cost is always more or less the same in btc, no matter what the price of btc is?

I've taken some calibrated DC draw and other power measurements on my one S9. I've taken some care with these and everything should be accurate to at least the precision I give.

Short version of results:

S9 DC Draw at 12.1V  == 1.89W/MHz + 57W

The 1.89W/MHz holds across at least 450 to 668.75 on this unit; the 57W is the controller and fans at 100%.

At 650 w/ 100% fan I see 106.67A @ 12.051V for 1285.5W.
50% fan reduces this to 1275W, hitting the S9 specification.

MHz |DC W  |AC W  |PSU Eff.  |W @ Wall w/ Fan  |J/GH @ Wall
45085596888.310330.107
5501040117588.512400.105
6001133128188.413460.104
6251179133388.413980.104
6501229139188.414560.104
668.751265143388.314980.104

PSU is a DPS-2000BB being fed 208V; voltage at PSU ranged from 206.8 to 208.7 during these tests.
All measurements taken simultaneously - Dedicated sampling for I & V on both AC & DC
+12V measured at the S9 board inputs ranged from 12.051 to 12.146, depending on load.
These DC Power draw measurements below _do not_ include loses in the 12V cables - these are dependent on your setup but may be around 10W; actual PSU efficiency is accordingly around 1% higher.

Ask UPS what that amount consists of and what's the HTS code on the invoice. Either Bitmain messed something up or UPS is trying to monetize you. The amount sounds excessive. Bitmain never paid anything AFAIK, that's just somebody giving you a generic runaround.

if you are under 2000 and the hts code is correct you are good.

there is a gray zone between 2000 and 2500.

https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/internet-purchases

Courier Shipping: Goods shipped by courier, express, or other commercial service usually are expedited through CBP by a customs broker hired by that commercial service and then delivered seamlessly to your door. Customs brokers are not CBP employees. There are a number of different charges associated with these services, including shipping and handling, the fees charged by the service for clearing the merchandise through CBP, as well as any Customs duty and processing fees that may be owed on your importation.
Pluses: Get seamless delivery. All you have to do is sign for the package when it arrives. In most cases delivery is quick and reliable. When there's a problem, there is a tracking number that can help resolve the matter.

Pitfalls: Many people have found the various charges and fees levied to be higher than they expected, and sometimes exceed the cost of their purchase(s).

Buyers often have the misunderstanding that when the purchase price includes shipping and handling, all the costs associated with clearing the package through CBP are covered by the seller. They don't realize that brokers fees and CBP duties may be an additional charge that the buyer is responsible for.

Freight Shipping: Merchandise shipped by freight can arrive in the United States at an air, sea or land port. If your goods are being shipped by freight, you should ask the seller to instruct the freight company to forward them to your doorstep, which may entail the shipper's use of a customs broker to clear your goods. Alternatively, ask that the goods be forwarded to a port of entry near where you live so that you can clear or "enter" them yourself (advisable only if the shipment is under $2000 in value. See Formal Entry below.)
Pluses: Can be economical, particularly, if you're prepared to handle the logistics of clearing the goods through Customs yourself. Also, the best way to handle large bulky purchases.

Pitfall: If the freight company has not been instructed to forward your goods, they could end up sitting on the dock at the port where they first entered the country.

Heads-Up

U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not inform importers of the arrival of cargo or freight. When cargo or freight arrives at a U.S. port of entry, it is the responsibility of the shipper or a designated agent to inform the importer of its arrival. However, proper notification does not always happen, particularly, if the shipper has incomplete contact information for you, the importer. Therefore, it is important to find out the scheduled arrival date of your import and follow-up.

...

Informal Entries: If the value of your purchase(s) is less than $2500 and your goods are being shipped by mail or freight, they may, in most cases, be imported as an informal entry. However, there are exceptions to this. For instance, if the importation is determined to be for commercial purposes, the value limit for filing an informal entry for many textile items is either $250 or $0 - depending on whether or not the item is subject to Quota (see below). Clearing goods through CBP as an informal entry is less arduous a process than clearing them by filing a formal entry. Essentially, when goods are cleared as an informal entry, CBP will prepare the paperwork, including determining the classification number and duty rate for your merchandise.
The duty rate for many items typically bought in an on-line auction is zero, however, CBP may charge a small processing fee for mail imports that do require the payment of duty.

If your goods are sent by a courier or express service, their brokers will usually handle the paperwork, and bill you for their services. If your goods are being shipped by freight, and you want to clear them through CBP yourself, be sure the shipping company has instructions to deliver them to a port near you. Otherwise, you will need to arrange for someone else to clear the goods for you when they arrive. Your alternative is to ask the seller to make arrangements to have your goods forwarded to your door, in which case you should expect to pay for the services of the customs broker who coordinates this when your goods arrive in the U.S.A.

I have a background in accounting.  Looks to me that all this gear is subject to tax since miners are for making money thus may be pushed into the commercial number of 250 not 2500.

i will need to see if  the paperwork was fucked up on bitmaintech's end or if we will need to pay.

I believe it is somewhat arbitrary.  The one time UPS wanted a fee from me was not the most expensive order I ever made.  As part of the rigamarole I went through to get an explanation (and eventually a refund) I provided old tracking numbers with shipments from bitmain for a greater dollar amount that had no fee attached.  I could practically hear the head-scratching over the phone.  Honestly I think they just wing it and sometimes they randomly decide to add a fee.  My S9 was more than $2000 USD and it had no fee.

EDIT: Wish I had bought another B3 while it was under 3 BTC now.  With BTC this far down I don't see myself buying any hardware for quite some time.

Damnit. Just checked with UPS and my B3 arriving on Thursday is tagged as
"United States 06/22/2016 7:12 A.M. The receiver must pay the duties or taxes due on the package."

Time to get on the horn with them...

If you can live your life entirely within the "Bitcoin Bubble", this is of no importance. For the other 99.9% folks that have to deal with actual fiat money, then I have but one word that you should never forget related to Bitcoin:

Right, but what's the cause? I'm really looking forward to getting back to rational stability instead of sitting around waiting to get hosed by speculators. Stability is good for a currency if it wants to actually be used as a currency instead of another random nonexistent traded asset for investors to jerk each other off with.

Think I also recall something about the Fed's this week selling off the last BTC they seized from SiklRoad. That would have been a sizeable amount methinks.
