Just out of curiosity. As Samsung's 10 nm process is already in mass production phase and TSMC's 12 nm will come soon as well. Is it planned in the near future to develop more efficient ASICs using these technologies?

Most likely, but as Bitmain has the most efficient hardware in the current generation and they are most likely in no hurry, I guess it is going to take time before we see smaller node Bitcoin ASIC chips.

Wild scenario would be that Bitfury, Canaan or BW.com for example would come first before Bitmain with a smaller node chip.

no not in the near future.   by this 20180 in the spring they may go to a 10nm/12nm  but frankly.  they made build a second 14/16nm chip that is better then the current chip.  they have done this before.  I believe they had 2 different 28nm chips.

the bm1384 chip in the s5 was 28nm
the bm1385 chip in the s7 was 28nm

Not sure about Samsung's capacity to manufacture for bitcoin mining companies. So far i think BW is the only one sourcing from them. the rest are all at TSMC. If Samsung does manage to take 10nm to the market, vendors like Qualcomm, Apple, etc with deep pockets would likely take priority to get orders. And TSMC's 12nm is actually a revised version from 16nm architecture, which is not a genuine 12nm.

In today's market, despite the pitiful defect rate, Bitmain's 16-nm S9 easily beats competitors by 20~30% in performance so I don't know if they are incentivized enough to throw big money into designing another new chip. I would think the competitors would be pushed more to upgrade first. Maybe with the revised "12-nm" architecture, they could eventually even out with Bitmain.

Well yeah, TSMC's 12 nm is just a shrink of the existing 16 nm but they are preparing a 10 nm node as well. So that's why I tought it might be a possible solution as the big companies would obviously go with the 10 nm process, so the 12 nm could be more affordable (and availible) for the smaller ASIC industry.

Almost every successful product based business grows this way.  If people did not buy Bitmain miners they would not have the money to innovate and bring out newer, faster, more efficient miners.  And you can replace the word miners with widgets and Bitmain with any company building cutting edge products.  Tesla has done the exact same thing as have 100's of brands we buy and use every day. 
Bitmain has a lot of faults, like there deplorable repair system.  But it's a well run business in most respects.

It's sad that they sell junk and don't warranty it worth a damn.
And we don't payf or them to invent, I'm fairly certain they keep a miner for every one or two they sell which is dumped into their farms. have you seen how big they are? we bank roll their mining.
Which would be okay if the hardware they were releasing was worthy and reliable.

I think they just haven't squeezed all of the juice out of hashnest S7's so they are lowering the fees. Otherwise they would face huge amount of S7's being redeemed. As long as S7's are in their hands, they earn transaction and maintenance fees.
Or an even worse suspicion: they simply don't have that many S7's to back up the amount represented on hashnest. it could be hashrate created from nowhere, or from S9's.

Well this is good news and also bad news,.  Good news we can start to combat the endless trove of thieves that btc seems to harbor.  Bad news we prolly only seen the beginning of price to tank.  Be interesting if it tanks far enough and people have to withdrawal their s7.. what will happen .. Anyone guess.  Somehow I think Bitmain may have some trouble producing enough s7.  time will tell. It would be senseless to make a new chip.

So if new gear comes it could be the T9. Maybe 10 th using 1400 watts and it does not break.

I am with you on this one.  Intel is bringing out new chips, but this takes a while (1-1.5 years) before we see the new chips in mining.  I will also agree with Phil on the incremental upgrades of the current chips to be more reliable/efficient before we see the 7nm in mining.

I'd like to warn people over here about Bitmain's poor customer service and poorly built products, as I'm waiting for a few months atm for a broken hash board of an R4 miner to get repaired. Moreover, their PSUs sometimes don't switch on at all, and you need to wait a few hours before trying to get them working again by pulling out the power plug and then putting it back in the wall socket again, and another S9 miner switched broke and it took a few months to get it working again. Bitmain, please fix your problems and train your support staff better, as the current staff seems completely unreliable to solve time-critical problems as which may arise with bitcoin mining. It might be superfluous to tell you all that we're still waiting for apologies and a fitting compensation for the damage this problems causes to our mining operation. @Bitmain: thanks in advance and don't hesitate to send a private message in order to get things working again!
