I don't use the Bitcoin-qt client because it's 1) sluggish and 2) doesn't let you send a transaction without fees.

I am using Electrum but the issue I have if I send or recieve a transaction I need to close and re-open it for the transaction to show in the history. E.g. I send a transaction from electrum to blockchain wallet. Blockchain site instantly updates without touching it, Electrum client doesn't show the transaction at all in the history. 30 seconds later, nothing. Close and re-open Electrum and it shows the transaction I sent finally.

Is there any way to have Electrum be in real-time?

It's supposed to be real-time. It sure is real-time for me.

Perhaps you've got an old version?

You can ask in #electrum at IRC to see if they can help with that issue you have. Make sure you are running the latest version for your OS

I think I was just having connection problems, but it would be nice to have a refresh button and info about when it was last updated.

You can also switch servers using the green button, maybe a server was lagging
