IIRC you need to be a VIP to change username.

Or a service that rebranded, in that case theymos has been granting wishes for new names in the past aswell, even without the VIP status.
Speaking of the devil, OP of the linked topic should be your first contact, write theymos a PM about it.
That being said, I made a similar request recently which didn't get answered (might have just been lost in a pile of crap, maybe I should write him another PM soon).

Here are few things I suggest :

• Contact theymos and ask him to change your username (He will most likely won't change it)
  
• Forget about this account and make a new one with the name you want
• Or you can donate https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html and get the ability to change your username

So second way is probably what's you going to chose If the first doesn't work.

Paying 50BTC which is 34.050 USD is kinda overpriced for a name change. Still I would love to remain under that account as we have a long history. Will try to post Theymos a PM.

Remember the forum was created on 2009 when Satoshi created Bitcoin , so at that time Bitcoin was few cents or few dollars
Theymos simply decided to keep that amount even with the price increase because he see that 1 BTC = 1 BTC.

You might want to contact BadBear as well. I got my proposal approved by him back in the days, when I requested with valid reason.
On a side note: His less active as of late so you should be patient plus back then due to lesser user base, such request had better chance of approval instead of now, but still worth a shot.

When I had my name shortened I asked Theymos. I am not sure of his criteria, but he hooked me up within a day or 2.
