Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

I heard about Bitcoin originally a few years ago from a news article on the internet (probably BBC). Then forgot about it until I happened to come across it again on Wikipedia.

I found out about it a few years ago from an article on Hacker News. It was titled something like "The Most Dangerous Idea in the World", or something like that. I was fascinated by the implications of bitcoin.

I got involved, created a valuable service, and never looked back.

I learned of Bitcoin when wikileaks was on the map and Visa, Mastercard and paypal banned them. Forbes wrote an article about them starting to accept Bitcoin and I was sold!

I heard about it some time back. Then I finally took a bigger look once an email went out from symantec put a warning about bots and trojans mining.

stumbled across it at circa 5am on the 21st July 2010 - shared it with a good friend, who shared it with amir, who then got in to it and organised the first bitcoin conference - funny how things work, wish I'd staked in it then rather than later - could have had several thousand BTC, instead i just kept 5 and ignored it for a couple of years whilst i worked on other stuff

I'm not rightly sure, I know it was a couple years ago but it didn't really click. I was reintroduced to it by Reddit rather recently.

Really wish I invested back then...

Learned about Bitcoin after googling "how to make money with your computer", back in late 2011!

Will take me a while to climb up again, But where is a will, there is a way...

Definitely about the same time that I learned about Tor a year or two ago.  I ended up purchasing about 50 coins for $2.50 each, sold and repurchased them and finally decided that $12 per coin was the highest they would probably reach and sold them all.  Went from extremely happy to very disappointed now that I didn't keep them.  Undecided

Hazek on ronpaulforums.com. I was turned off by the first 2011 crash, but when I saw the price was rising again back in February, I was convinced and started diving in.

I've heard of quite a few cases of digital artists whose Paypal accounts are terminated because they do some racy "adult" art commissions.

One of those artists posted on a forum sharing the bad news and bitcoins were suggested half jokingly as a payment alternative, saying nobody understands them.

That made me curious, gathered information and enden up buying.

Was at a conference and heard it mentioned as a way to pay for the service that was being discussed. Then wasted 3 months before researching it.  Kicking myself now for waiting so long.
