Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Absolutely touching.  Thank you very much for writing this.  I can only hope that if I am afflicted with a disease like the one described that I would respond in much the same way you did.  I'll be looking forward to your release you mention near the end!

Thank you, Hal Finney.

We are what we create. It seems one of your principles is that the power of the good nodes will overcome that of the bad. You must believe that people are essentially good. As you must be.

Hal, thank you. You have helped to give us a change for the better future. That is a legacy that anyone should be proud of. No one could ask for more.

I wish you and your family well. You're inspiration for all of us.

Thank you, Hal Finney, for such a touching and inspirational thread.

Concerned that blockchain bloat will lead to centralization? Storing less than 4 GB of data once required the budget of a superpower and a warehouse full of punched cards. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/IBM_card_storage.NARA.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punched_card

Hal Finney,

I am left awestruck and deeply inspired by your story and its significance for the larger chain of events of all things bitcoin. In fear of exaggerating, I will only say thank you from the bottom of my heart for your contribution.

Keep up the fight

Wow what an incredible guy. Hal, I hope you the best you will go down as one of the first to use Bitcoin, and even more impressive that you communicated with Satoshi.

Thank you for the inspirational post.

Are your conversations with Satoshi public on this forum, or perhaps still stored somewhere privately? I know that they might be of interest to a lot of Bitcoin people - you were making history then.

I quipped that we were truly in the future: we have a decenteralized cryptocurrency, and one of its developers exists in brain-in-a-jar state.

We do indeed live in the future, and the OP has been dealt a strange hand.

It gives me pause, to think that... Hal Finney may outlive every other person in this thread.

If things turn out well for Humanity, as well as we can reasonably hope — better than we fear;
It should not completely surprise me then, if — some few, or many decades hence,
OP were to visit the Internet Archive of that age, and in his curiosity revisit this page,
and perhaps also, after a moment of reflection, weep for those who wept for him,
— the people who were still alive.

...I should send Alcor an email, ask them about their stance toward Bitcoin,
despite, for now, being out of their reach for geographical reasons...

Oh, and for the love of all that is good, every one of you; keep breathing.

Here's a post of Hal's on the original Bitcoin announcement thread: http://www.mail-archive.com/cryptography%40metzdowd.com/msg09975.html

Compare his responses to the others on the thread. Also see Hal's replies to the client-announcement thread. He's on a higher level than anyone else. When I first went through these, not knowing who he was, I was convinced that this guy was a "plant" of some kind — i.e., he had to have been at least familiar with Bitcoin before it was announced, to be able to make those kinds of analyses. Well, I did a little more research, and it turns out he's merely a genius.

Hal, I'm really looking forward to your project. Cheers, and thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Thx for the link ~andrewdadr.  I should have found this archive and considered it required study some time ago.  I'm supposed to be working, but scanned a few of the mails.  Enough to realize that I was quite wrong in my conjecture about how Satoshi might have viewed the likely growth trajectory of the Bitcoin solution and the resources required to operate it.  His thoughts seem to be very close to Mike Hearn's (which I continue to disagree with personally.)

Hal,

Just to echo the other devs:  your contributions continue to be felt today.  Pieter (sipa) is working on integrating your ECDSA speed-ups into the main client.

Thanks so much.
