Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Rest in peace.

I never met him, and he doesn't know me, I live in the other part of the world, I came across this story a year or so ago, but he left a big place in my heart, and I find the timing depressing... while people are taking that ice bucket challenge, Hal passes away.

please consider donating to the ALS Association. you can dedicat it for the memory of Hal finney.

In the wake of bitcoin groundbreaker Hal Finney’s passing a few days ago, some prominent figures in the bitcoin community have teamed up in a campaign to raise funds for research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Thank you Hal for your contributions to Bitcoin, and also for raising awareness of ALS and getting Bitcoiners on board.
Also for getting Gavin to soak himself for the cause

May more icebuckets fall down to find a cure to this disease.

The main donation address is here https://blockchain.info/address/1JsnZLEGgLJY7rbDdaKTzC2JyvfaKUpF5p. Donations will be accepted through the Thanksgiving holiday (27th November) in the US and the payment will be made on 2nd December.

In the wake of bitcoin groundbreaker Hal Finney’s passing a few days ago, some prominent figures in the bitcoin community have teamed up in a campaign to raise funds for research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

As a sidenote, it seems that the A.L.S. Association has amassed more than 40 million dollars in connection with the ice bucket challenge.

Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/22/business/media/ice-bucket-challenge-donations-for-als-top-41-million.html

Of course, more funding can only be good.

I hope that these funds are put to good use and used for projects that can bring more understanding and perhaps a cure for the disease.

I don't think he is gone. His body is kept in cryogenic state at the Alcor Life Extension Fundation.
We may see him back in a near future.

Arcadia High School has produced many graduates who've accomplished amazing success in their adult years.  In my humble opinion, Hal Finney, Class of 1974, sits at the top of this AHS Alumni List.  Mr. Finney's vision, passion and intelligence, was at a level of few people ever.

In my mind you are as close to Satoshi as we will know.

I think that just about sums it up.

Thank you, Hal, for everything.  May science advance to the point where you may one day be thanked again in person, and read through these threads, if Bitcointalk still exists then.
