Does a master node only rewards me with coins if the device on which it is running is plugged in? So no reward if my pc is shut down, do i get this right?

Masternode needs to be online. A good explanation from ChainCoin:

A Masternode is a server that performs service functions on a blockchain; such as instant send, coin mixing to support privacy, and aids in stabilizing the network. In return, masternodes are paid rewards, dividends in the form of Chaincoin on a periodic basis, for providing important services.

There are coins which supports rewards based on pure "holding" them in the wallet. (this is not staking) E.g. NEO (previously AntShares) is a specific example. For NEO, you would need to just keep coins in your wallet and you will be rewarded by NeoGAS (functions as Gas for Ethereum). This is more a dividend like approach.

In the case of NEO, you can keep your wallet completely offline and you're still getting rewards.

Thanks for the explanation. Smiley

Here is the lowest cap masternode network that I know of.

Flaxscript.

https://github.com/thegreatoldone/flaxscript

Here is the Block Explorer:

https://chainz.cryptoid.info/flax/

as you can see, it has 7 masternodes and a marketcap of $15,000 USD

15 connections and it still has active pools mining FLAX.

right now there is 5,472,849 FLAX in existence and the network mints about 1000 FLAX per day.

You need 23,000 FLAX for a masternode which is 0.029 BTC, pretty cheap compared to other masternodes.

Funny thing is that if you used 100% of all the coins and converted them into masternodes, you only get about 237 masternodes.

Here is the exchange it trades on:

https://www.cryptopia.co.nz/Exchange/?market=FLAX_BTC#

full disclosure, I own enough FLAX for 1 masternode. bought it just for fun, you never know with altcoins this one might just trade higher.

Be careful of viruses.

Some good coins listed here, can anyone tell me if I can run master nodes on my MacBook? and would I have to leave my Mac on 24/7?

Hey guys,

I am looking to purchase a few coins to run masternodes after looking at this - https://masternodes.pro/
I have narrowed down on ENT, EXCL, ARC, SYNX and am planning to invest in these 4 to start off with. First two are cheap (< $200), and SYNX and EXCL are a little expensive ($800 and $3500 to run masternodes respectively - 5000 coins each), but the returns seem worth it. Both are on Bittrex which is awesome!

Can you please let me know if you guys see any problems with any of these 4 coins? I am really interested to hear your comments on ExclusiveCoin (EXCL). Based on what I understand, they had to re-launch/re-vision their coin due to past issues with an exchange, but the coin itself is a 3-year old coin. The total supply is just around 4 million out of which ~800k are locked in the masternodes. So with a 3.2 million net supply, this seems like a no-brainer to hold for a while to see if there would be a huge rise in the future. Even if I don't run a masternode, with that kind of limited supply, just holding even a small number of coin seems like a good idea in the long run. Am I missing something here?

DASH/PIVX/NEM master nodes are unaffordable now and I am kinda looking for cheaper alternatives. Would you recommend any other coins in addition to the above 4, based on your experience?

Thanks for your help.

EXCL is solid, I can recommend that one.  SYNX is alright but the wallet sucks at the moment, so be ready to wait for it to sync or for them to release an update.

Masternodes = Centralization!

pretty much this.

masternode are only part of a good pos system
masternodes are not central, they are decentralized.
masternodes and pos are much more energy friendly, envioument friendly than pow
pow wont sustain in the long run, masternodes are for now the next best alternative.
you can hate them or love them, but they are here to stay.
dont miss the train, get in while you can.

New coin with masternodes is going to airdrop.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2056867

this is MTNC - Masternodecoin
if you want a masternode for masternodecoin you have to pay 0.075 btc now (for exchange listing) to own it. (50,000 MTNC)
if you wait for the airdrops it will take too long.

ill try my luck and get in early.
or wait for exchange, but we are not going to sell cheap Tongue
maybe some airdroped coins will be cheap..

I was hoping DAS would grow to be a very good alternative to all Masternode coins with respect to affordability and earnings as well as to have a functional technology that could be innovated upon, i was wrong as the dev seem to be nonchalant!
I'm out of DAS for now just watching to see what happens in the coming days i would advice anyone interested in DAS to observe carefully!

I would be careful investing anything with ENT, it is a good project but it is sailing with no captain as it seems that the dev abandoned it

Do you know how many TRCs will be needed to set up a masternode?

Oh boy what am I seeing here, many noobs trying to promote their useless coins, it's like masternodes are something magical Cheesy all of the coins mentioned here combined have less than 1000 active and real traders with horrible markets, not to mention pre-mined or insta-mined coins. none of them ever had any community experts reviewing their codes completely, as usual they hope for uneducated and noobs to fall for them and invest their money on their coins.
