Good thing that he could report it, and police arrested robbers. It's a good sign that government react on this kind of things, I'm not sure would police do something in my country.
There is always risk when someone work with huge amounts. I think with 28 k he could pay someone to protect him, or he could pay for some extra protection on internet, but people wish to save lest cent. Sometimes its good to sacrifice some money, to not lose everything. People need to be careful, there will always be evil and bad people.
"In a nutshell, the network works like a distributed timestamp server, stamping the first transaction to spend a coin. It takes advantage of the nature of information being easy to spread but hard to stifle." -- Satoshi

That can happen to you when selling a car as well.
Everything you do personally includes a little risk of danger.
But I do not think it happenes that often.
And mostly the circumstances are bad for the seller. Lonely place or so. It would be easy to minimize that risk.

  It's me!!!

Till now I haven't found any risk or danger on buying /selling of bitcoin. I always trade with traders found through trading websites. Most of the time I prefer localbitcoins.com for trusted traders.

I never buy or sell bitcoin in person and I don't have any plan too as of now. It's risky to exchange money online but riskier in person, most especially if it's that big like the one on the article. Atleast online you just risk your money, unlike in person that you risk both your money and your life. "SAFETY FIRST", always be careful, it's not that safe as of these days especially when there's money involved. Remember that life is more important than anything, we can earn money but we only have one life to live.

Where ever you are going to sell bitcoins in person or online you have to take some precautionary steps to avoid danger because not only in person but online selling is also risky. Their are so many steps have mentioned in other thread about how to trade in person before trading what all steps you have to follow to avoid this type of problems.

First you have to do in person trading in public places like cafe, mall etc, and before dealing you have to come along with any one of your friend or family with you so that you both can tackle the problem. Like this their are so many steps if you follow properly then you can avoid danger in person trading.

Well you bring a gun, duh. Who would meet a stranger with $28000 cash and no firearm? A bank, for example, would not.

In my country you can't sell a car (or anything else, be it a thing or a service) for cash unless it's less than 3000€/6BTC.

I got robbed at nailgun point as a teen, I lost 500 French Francs (the biggest bill at the time) so about 0.15BTC, a large sum of money for me in those days. The irony is I was meeting a guy who supposedly sold stolen computer hardware and had a 3DFX Voodoo 2 for me, so I guess karma hit me, but it wasn't him or his friends that robbed me, just two guys who got lucky.

Since then I have avoided cash as much as possible, I leave a bank trail but since I don't sell or buy huge amounts at a time, I doubt I have attracted too much attention.

The only place I would do a huge cash transaction would be inside a bank itself !

I don't have experience with person to person.trading but so far O thought this was one of the safest way because you meet the person you are dealing with so there is less possibility to get scamed. Never thought that you could be robbed.

You can be robbed any time, thats why holding too much cash in your walet is dangerous. The OP example someone hold 28000 in a wallet without security guards is pure insanity, no matter whether wanted to buy Bitcoin or something else.

I do use localbitcoins to buy Bitcoins in person, but never in larger amounts. Carry in your wallet only as much cash as you are ok to lose if you get robbed, but I talking from my experience when someone stole my wallet and I noticed it later (and it has nothing to do with Bitcoin).

If a buyer wanted to buy BTC carrying big amount then he should at least have someone with him because there are many opportunist in this world especially when it comes to money. Yes it's a safe option to meet in person especially that a big amount is involved but there should also be extra precaution in doing the transaction. You cannot trust someone totally especially if it's a stranger.

That danger isn't related to BTC but to cash. I'm used to it as I've bought and sold many old cars using nothing but cash, and I'll keep on doing things this way, but you need to be cautious when handling a lot of cash. I guess the guy who was stolen wasn't cautious enough.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

I also do not rely on dealing with persons for buying bitcoin, I usually buy bitcoins on most reliable exchange sites, where there is no any fear that you will be scammed by that person and will lose your money while paying him for the deal.

it is not risky to be honest though it might be risky if you hold your money on an exchange because a hack might happen the same like on bitfinex

Damn, $28K cash, guns and knives? Fuck that shit. My life is worth way more than that. Online in increments, ftw. If I had to do it person, I'd bring/hire some serious security and demand a public(-ish) place to do the transaction.

In my place, we do sell btc in person in order to exchange as cash. We never met  before, but trust come from friend experiences who’ve did exchange with that person. Also don’t sell in person in big amount.

Offline or online transaction, the risks are always there. But I think the chances of danger are much lower in online transactions and you can just buy from the proved legit exchange sites.

if you want to bought bitcoin i suggest you to do it online and search for trustable site, if you are doubt you can purchase it part by part, when buying things in a large sum its better not to  do it personally, because its very dangerous, but if it  a must situation then ask a bunch of friends to accompany you

I'm always using a person for selling my bitcoin, and until this time I never get any problem from there, I know the risk is always there. but if you worried about using personal service to buying and selling bitcoin better for you to using an exchange it's will more giving guarantee for you, because using online escrow.
