They are planing to enable sms verification, but this may take

Yes but if you want steemit account without any bound of your social media account then you need to wait for their message in your gmail.

It does say receive your account using sms but when you click on it they ask for it to be sent to you email which I find weird.
It shouldn't ask you to enter in an email address but a phone number so you can get an sms.
What country are they from maybe they can't send sms if you are in a country outside theirs.

No, in those campaigns people advertise their sites & if the user gambles/clicks on an ad/ likes/follows then the reason will be their own will. But in this steemit case you are Literally paying users to upvote no matter they like/dislike the content or even have the bare minimum interest to read the tittle.

In that case STEEM is a pretty clear scam.
