• Creating a community on reddit to make a 'buzz'
• Creating tipbots for sites such as twitter / youtube / etc
• Posting about your coin on bitcointalk
• Making a coin which is technologically innovative (like the blockchain hype nowadays)

Are there any other methods that I've missed? Which are the most effective ways to make a coin valuable and have high volume?

I'm particularly interested in people who have seen something work especially well, putting an alt coin on the map, and very interested in people who have made their own coins famous. What has worked for you? What have you seen working? I would love to know your secrets!

all the methods that you named here are good and legit ways of advertising your own altcoin and making it popular so the high volume and high price would follow.

but the best way that has been proven to work best is manipulation
look at Ethereum and see how it rise up from nothing, because they own most of the coins and can manipulate the price in any way they like!!

A classic way is to make a coin around a famous celebrity/known brand. For example. Coinyecoin got headlines in the news. It was a total cluster fuck since it was a trademark fight for the name. First it was Kainyecoin then Coinyecoin or something. Trumpcoin now exists and gets a decent amount of traffic. There's people doing this all the time trying to pump their coins.

But the best thing that should you use is signature campaign so that almost all members can see your altcoin..

at the moment the best way is to be listed on the so called darknetmarkets. e.g. monero.
