I have backed up them WHOLE multibit wallet located at -

You're not wrong in backing up the whole folder, but depending on your needs you might not need some of the files. The [name]-data folder contains your wallet backups that multibit makes automatically, [name].info file contains the description and labels. You can read more here.

Cheers, had a read through them, could not find some of them in my Multibit folder ?

So if my laptop (all i use) broke and i wanted to recover my wallet, do i just select 'Open  Wallet' and select the correct one ?

When i goto the whole folder i have backed up it has 4 of them but NONE of them correspond to the name of my wallet ??

They are -

Ghash.wallet   -I think iused that site years ago !!
multibit.wallet
P2p.wallet      -I used to use P2P mining nodes, but was a pain since i could not monitor my miners.....
Untitled.wallet - HuhHuh?? Not sure what this is Huh

I now use Slushpool as i can easily remotely monitor my miners BUT there is no sign of this in the folder ?

Huh

I don't know why a wallet is missing. All wallets should be there unless you moved them.
Try checking the "add password" tab to see the location of your wallet. I think you might be confusing the description as the wallet name (both can also be found in the "add password" tab).

What wallet SHOULD i expect to see when i select 'Open Folder' ?

I presumed all i had to do was select the 'multibit.wallet' ?

If you can't pick 'add password', pick 'change password' instead. Both of them will bring up a window where you can see the wallet description and filename (and its location).

I don't know what 'Open Folder' you're referring to. If you mean 'Open Wallet' then you should see all your wallets (files with .wallet format).

Quote

Any files with .wallet format, to be exact. multibit.wallet is just the default wallet multibit creates when you opened it for the first time, you can change it at anytime by renaming the file. untitled.wallet is the default name when you created a new wallet but didn't specify a name.

Edit:
I've found that the Open/New wallet option lands in the documents folder instead of appdata/roaming/multibit sometimes. You might want to check your documents folder for any .wallet files. It happened after I closed all wallets, but I think it can be caused by some other things because I first noticed it with all my wallets open.

Thanks, i am in the correct place place and i did mean open wallet. It is located at -

C>Users>Acer Black>Appdata>Roaming>Multibit>Untitled.wallet

Even though my one wallet has a title/name ?

I have just been saving the 'whole' Multibit folder to a couple of USB sticks....

My concerns are -

1. If my PC packs in and i install Mutibit Classic on a new PC there is NO guide on how to recover your wallet coins ?

2. My private key or are there keys ? Are still on my laptop and could be hacked !!!!!! Can i just delete them ?

I am seriously considering getting a KeepKey hardware wallet and upgrade to MultibitHD, but i think i will start another thread on that.

Cheers

1. The .wallet files have all your private keys and bitcoins. So if you'll be fine as long as you have saved them somewhere safe.

2. You can safely delete those files once you have copied them somewhere else. Of course this means that you'll have to copy them back if you want to use them again (or open them from your backup directory). Also multibit keeps its automatic backup inside the folders so if you want to delete all traces of your wallet you'll have to delete them too.

BTW in case you didn't catch it I've edited my post above while you were typing (the one about the documents folder).

Cheers starting to understand it a bit more now.

Seems a bit of pain to remove and add them back for every transaction (i do a lot).

You were correct about the 'my documents' folder, it contains a wallet.dat file !!!!!

Think i will just install Multibit HD and get a KeepKey, bit wary of using the chrome extension on it though.

Looks ike i can run both Multibit Classic and Multibit HD on the same pc.

I really appreciate your adivce.

Thanks

Err... Multibit doesn't use wallet.dat file format. If you can't open it using multibit then it must be a wallet file from another wallet. Bitcoin core/qt uses wallet.dat, not sure if there's any other wallet that uses it. If you can open it (or maybe you just typed wallet.dat out of habit) then that's fine.

You're welcome.

I think it was from a Litecoin wallet i once used, it was last updated in 2014 so nothing to do with Multibit.

Cheers

You're not wrong in backing up the whole folder, but depending on your needs you might not need some of the files. The [name]-data folder contains your wallet backups that multibit makes automatically, [name].info file contains the description and labels. You can read more here.

I think backing up and then encrypting the whole folder would be a good idea. Just decrypt it if you intend to use the wallet. I use Cryptomator + Veracrypt for this purpose. If you want to store it in a USB then it would be a good idea to also zip it with a password. Even if you are hacked there will be 2 or more layers for the hacker to get to your coins.

Cheers FURY, was always weary of storing the file on a cloud service etc, i do have it zipped passworded on a few USB's/SD and that zip is in a passworded folder.

I just save the WHOLE multibit folder located in the position of my first post as i do not now which private keys precisely to save (makes no difference anyway i suppose as they are ALL removed from my pc).

I still like the look of the KeepKey though for ease of use and it's only $99 (still overpriced !!!).
