Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

You're in Iceland and you didn't post pictures?!?! Come on man that's just not fair. If I could go anywhere in the world right now it would be Iceland ( and not just because I'd be looking for your free bitcoins lol. This is a good idea that I might just do locally.

Yes, it's for real.

I'm guessing that the value of the cache itself isn't enough to justify me running out and purchasing a flight from Chicago.  Sounds fun though. I may think about hiding a bitcoin funded geo-cache somewhere here in Illinois just for the fun of it.

I think you must give us more details about your free bitcoin in Iceland, it will become more complete information and don't hiding informations, because there are not people who will take your free bitcoin on this forum.  Wink

Most likely not. But with or without Bitcoin geo cache Iceland is definitely worth a visit. If you love nature and are not the beach type tourist, you will be enchanted. You can take the road trip on the circular road around the island, with many points of interest nearby (waterfalls, hot springs). It's perfect for hiking as well. If you want to visit the inner region, you should prepare yourself well though (all-terain vehicle needed, supplies, pay attention to weather conditions...).

It has been quite a few years since I visited Iceland  - it was before the banking crisis and it was quite expensive. For me it was still a great vacation and I can only recommend it. I think due to the devaluation of their currency you can now get around a bit cheaper. And in case you find the geocache... Cheesy

This is fun! Imagine people were finding bitcoins in the land instead of pokemons. Lol.
Someone must make "Bitcoin GO" app so it would be more fun.  Cheesy

That’s really a great interesting concept but since community has worldwide existence, I am sure that it is out of reach for most of them but still this is great idea. If anyone from the community could find that treasure then it’s lottery for him but if some non bitcoiner finds it then it’s lottery for us.

How about creating something for the whole community? I mean a some kind of online treasure hunt where everyone can participate (It would definitely be different from mining).

It would be great, if this can become a trend. The people at local Bitcoin meetups can arrange their own or it can be done by prominent people in the community, who can be trusted. Make the treasure bigger, by crowd funding it or get companies to sponsor the prizes.

In this way more people can become involved to spread the hidden treasures. The funds can be placed in escrow, if a simple paper wallet drop will not be trusted. We have our own human driven PokemonGo for Bitcoin. ^smile^

That would be great if that is true. But I think there is something incomplete into it. It is because anybody will love to have a chance to get a free bitcoin in iceland.

It's a very nice idea! Maybe you'll do this in (many) other countries. Or maybe some more will do this.
And after it's over and the prize is claimed, it would be nice of you to post some pictures of the areas you visited, I'm sure you've made a lot of them.
