Ofcourse, but all of SR's transactions are via bitcoins

it's probably will still a significant portion of all buying/selling once the people speculating exit the market

IMHO Silk Road is still playing an important role in holding up the value of BTC, at least at this time. The conversion from $ to BTC is a minor hassle for people looking to buy that kind of stuff. Unfortunately it still is a big hassle as far as buying legit merchandise from the few merchants who currently accept BTC.

The Silk Road is not completely immune to being shut down. Hidden services on tor may be located in a couple of different ways.
For example, it's pretty likely that it's running on a tor relay, in order to give reason for all of the tor traffic (otherwise that would be suspicious to it's ISP), so you could take down relays (maybe 5seconds at a time - pretty unnoticeable), until the hidden service is no longer accessible from several locations, at which point you know that the relay you just took down was pretty close in the tor network to to the actual service, allowing you to narrow down the possibilities pretty greatly.

However, if the operator of the silk road is smart, he's paying for hosting somewhere where US authorities have little control, using Bitcoin, and only accessing the hosting over the tor network, and downloading a backup of the database to some other safe location regularly. If he's doing this, even locating the physical machine that its running on wouldn't allow them to shut the service down for more than a day or so, which is almost nothing.

Replacement sites are already popping up...if they can find  a way to transfer rep, also, then sellers can survive...that's the real issue to those that deal in this stuff: finding a way to stay mobile...Tor is a beginning...

D: I can't stand this. Someone I know put their bitcoins in silkroad, but can't get them now. He's flipping because he's ready to sell them since he thinks it's about to drop big.

Market seems to fluctuate with Silk road from what I've seen, I wont be surprised if we saw a little spike in price once it comes back up and the demand is there. For your friends sake I hope it comes back up before any drop.

This is why you should only store a few coins in there at a time.  The safest place for bitcoins is in your wallet.

Yeah, bitcoins are probably gonna go way back up when silk road is back up again. Its gaining a lot of notoriety and bringing a lot of attention to bitcoins.
