For those of you who think that Bitcoin is unhackable I urge you to think again.

I am not not talking about traditional hacking as in a hack against the core software.

I am talking about perception.

HACK:
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/hacked?s=t
Quote
to damage or injure by crude, harsh, or insensitive treatment; mutilate; mangle:

Many people overlook this unprotected area of Bitcoin and may not have contingencies planned out accordingly.

These are just a few examples of how Bitcoin's image gets hacked.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/in-the-bitcoin-era-ransomware-attacks-surge-1471616632
http://money.cnn.com/2016/08/03/technology/bitcoin-exchange-bitfinex-hacked/
http://www.coindesk.com/european-union-proposes-tighter-bitcoin-controls-panama-papers-response/
http://www.coindesk.com/us-treasury-bitcoins-use-to-fund-terrorism-remains-unclear/
http://www.smh.com.au/world/australia-to-regulate-bitcoin-under-counterterrorism-finance-laws-20160808-gqnne2.html
http://www.defenseone.com/threats/2015/02/terrorism-finance-trackers-worry-isis-already-using-bitcoin/105345/

Remember that Bitcoin's inherent disruptive nature (technology disruptor) adds to the already uncertain global financial stage.

With this in mind I would like to point out an alternative for you to consider when Bitcoin's image is under attack.

Gold and silver has been around for a long long time and many of you are already aware of its existence in bullion form.

However, some overlook the fact that gold and silver provide the physical backbone of Bitcoin's existence.

That equipment you use to mine Bitcoin contains gold and silver.

That PC, tablet, or smart phone you are using to make transactions with or make a trade contain gold and silver.

In the form of gold plated contacts down to that Rohs compliant solder which contains one of the best conductors in the world (silver) precious metals are there to help make Bitcoin tick.

Without the precious metals and a host of many other raw materials Bitcoin obviously would be nonexistent.

Unlike the other raw materials, precious metals has been monetized for thousands of years.

They have always been considered a safe haven in times of uncertainty.

Here are just a few of the perks of expanding your portfolio into precious metals:

-Gold and silver has been backed by governments around the world since the 1980's. The United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, China, Great Britain, and Austria are all countries that have put into law that they must provide it's citizens with gold and silver bullion as needed by demand.

-Precious metals can be used in Individual Retirement Accounts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_IRA)

-You can protect your hard earned Bitcoin profits from exchange related hacks that cause the Bitcoin price to plummet unexpectedly.

If you are interested in exchanging Bitcoin for precious metals in attempt to solidify your investment portfolio do a google search and you will be sure to find some reputable dealers that offer up such a service.

https://www.google.com/#q=buy+gold+with+bitcoin

Only a fool puts his/her eggs in one basket.

Not sure about your motivation to post this. But, for those of who think that Bitcoin is unhackable, are not interested in your definition...

Haha this isn't even the right definition. That's the literal definition of hack. Are you joking? You know that this is describing taking a hatchet and chopping up a piece of wood right? My God what a stretch.

The Blockchain can't be hacked. It's a public Ledger. Do you want me to define Ledger for you?

OP's motive:
precious metals

OP's objective:
sell his precious metal because he wants more bitcoin.
in short if he wanted to keep precious metals he wouldnt be handing them out to then grab bitcoin from people buying his precious metal.

its a simple reverse psychology.. he want you to hold less bitcoin and hold more precious metal..so that he can hold less precious metal to hold more bitcoin

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

Absolutely right is sha256 would be easily hacked or decrypted then for sure not only Bitcoin would be affected but also all Internet banking system would also included same as you said. For sure people won't believe these claims since Bitcoin surpasses countless situation of problems.

I have no idea about OPs true intentions, but you certainly make some interesting posts on this forum.

It's not bad advice, though.
If you really want to make money investing long-term, you should diversify your funds a little.
Buying some precious metals is never really a bad idea. I could never see the price of gold and silver falling that much.

If you can give me a scenario where such asteroid that obliterated Earth would not render SHA256 obsolete I'd love to hear it.

Well, just from the top of my head, SHA256 is pretty good so I bet alians also use it.

The rest of your post is simply silly.

I agree the OP post has lots  of nonsense in it.  It is already stated that to hack bitcoin they must hack the sha256 system, and hacking so if succesful will not  only compromise bitcoin security but all of banking security in the  world.  He keep pushing precious metal, i can say we hear you, and somehow agree that one shouldn't put all his egg in 1 basket.

Time and time again I hear Bitcoin advocates claiming that it is superior based on it's technology alone.

I can think of another currency that was based on it's technology of the time and perception alone.....the U.S. dollar.

Now look at it.

It has been "hacked" to death and has been on the verge of meltdown for years.

The entire financial system based on fiat currency is on the brink of falling down a hole for that matter.

Enter Bitcoin.

You want to know the same thing Bitcoin has in common with the U.S. dollar?

It refuses to be backed by precious metals.

I think some metals dealers recognize this and wish to untie the two to some degree.

We can repeat history all over again or we can pave a new road where prosperity can be achieved on a wider scale.

But I can see why some of you can't see this.

It requires vision.

Oh so now you're letting us kno your motives. Why precious metals? What if people start mining gold that they find on asteroids flying by and it crashes to $3/lb? What then?

Bitcoin is based on the amount of energy used to 'create' a coin. And comparing a USD to bitcoin is like comparing a set of stairs to an escalator. One will keep going forever until it stops working (USD 'print some more money, we're running low!') and the other will get you to one location then stop (bitcoin. 21M. That's it that's all).

To put all of your money in one investment is stupid. If you're 100% invested in bitcoin, you haven't thought it out much. Same with precious metals. Sure now they're stable, but what about the huge gold rush?

All the internet has the possible to be hacked, but if it encrypted with the right way, the percentage of you break into somebody account is less than 1%, so no need to worry about your bitcoin, just be careful and put a longer password

Bitcoin being hacked from online exchangers or from any services/ wallets/ laptops are not problem related with bitcoin or its blockchain itself. As well as anything which is stored online can be stolen or hacked so bitcoin shouldn't be considered as susceptible to hack, misleading info.

Exactly what I was thinking of. The links to exchanges are hack not related to Bitcoin but to its infrastructure, run by private entities. In the Old West when gangsters robbed bank they were not hacking gold...

But you already invest in silver and gold  Smiley

Silver and gold is very much a part of Bitcoin and you are already investing in them.

If you didn't use these metals you would not be able to use the devices for very long at all.

Not sure why all the negative sentiments for the raw materials that build the backbone of Bitcoin itself?

As far as the technology goes it is good.

Not bullet proof though.

To believe the opposite is foolish at best.

From the looks of it many of the posters replying have been trying to divert the conversation to SHA256 credibility which is not what this thread is about.

The first three lines of post 1 could tell you that.

BTW no one forced anyone to talk about precious metals with me.

I suggest anyone believing that I am a shill that presents nonsense to stay clear from what I have to say.

If you see my name on the forum disregard and continue to follow the status quo.

You already succeeded in your goal... create a thread that draws attention.. most people are too lazy to read any further, and will just

read what you posted. Your reply to me, is clear misdirection to divert attention away from your shill behaviour. It is our task as Bitcoin

supporters to counter threads that promote anything other than Bitcoin on a Bitcointalk forum. How would the forums dedicated to silver

and gold feel if we spam them with Bitcoin promotions?

How would the forums dedicated to silver and gold feel if we spam them with Bitcoin promotions?

They do and you know what happens?

They have conversations like adults.

Go figure.

Unfortunately, you have to get off your high horse first and open your mind a bit.

You can use words like shill, troll, and misinformation but it won't change the facts.

You responded to zero percent about how I told you already invest in precious metals via Bitcoin hardware.

Instead you pulled out classic character assassination keywords in an attempt to make me sound inept.

It's ok.

I'm not (and will never be) mad at you for it.

I'm the type that when I get knocked down on my ass I dust myself off and carry on.

Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong and that's ok.

But truth is truth and if you support Bitcoin you already support precious metals.

Never look down on your supply chain.

It's bad for business.

You might find yourself missing your widget quotas.

Ah, the old .... character assassination ..{ I am the victim } excuse... nah, it's not working my friend. We discuss topics like adults too, but

we highlight shills, for the people who cannot spot them. I own some silver and some gold, but I prefer Bitcoin because it's more flexible

and practical in a online environment. Try sending a gold bar as payment to a merchant in another country.  Wink ... I am also not blind to

the risks involved with Crypto currencies... but the rewards and use is 100% more satisfying.  Grin ...I am also not mad at you, just hate

what you doing.  Sad

I actualy think the guy doesn´t understand how bitcoin works. what I can say is that nothing is unhackable, however up until now nobody has been able to hack the protocol itself other than exploring certain glitches. In the future, when a new and more secure way of security protocol other than SHA256 is invented we will perhaps see a migration to those alternatives. For now, what the guy introduced in this post was a way of exploring a flaw on the code and not hacking it.

But what if I don't own any of those things? Say I access this forum, and the internet in general, from internet cafes and all my coins are in paper wallets... Then I have no investment in precious metals right?

Also, that bitcoin can be "hacked" by "bad press" is pretty much true of almost anything of value... ask any politician that has been on the end of a smear campaign... or maybe ask Samsung are fairing with their precious metals "investments" at the moment in the wake of the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco  Undecided

Still... 10/10 for making bitcointalk a slightly more interesting place with your musings (trololololling?) on the bitcoin world in general...  Tongue

Bitcoin does have social hacking and bad publicity. But so do most currencies.
Untraceable currencies such as gold and Bitcoin are more susceptible to generate bad impressions on a wider community.

Not sure about your motivation to post this. But, for those of who think that Bitcoin is unhackable, are not interested in your definition...

Quote

Bitcoin can only be hacked, if SHA256 is hacked. And if SHA256 is hacked, all the internet banking is broken. So, instead of billion dollar bitcoin, u may worry about trillion dollar internet banking.

The motivation is clear... just have a look at his post history. This is one of the shills on Bitcointalk.. smack talking the technology. By the

looks of this post, he wants people to rather invest in silver and gold.  Grin ... He will counter this post with stupid logic, trying to deny this

and telling us that we are attacking everyone that is not for Bitcoin. We are here to talk about Bitcoin, not precious metals.  Roll Eyes

But you already invest in silver and gold  Smiley

Tablet = contains silver and gold
smart phone = contains silver and gold

And what about brass?Too rarely finding the device is using gold for his hardware, and that's will making the cost of production is increasing a much, and about silver, i don't think like that.

I couldn't really care less about something like that, so far there have been a ton of things happening to Bitcoin and all of these events have been happening for a while and we still have yet to see something significant come out of it.

I own some silver and some gold
Try sending a gold bar as payment to a merchant in another countryWink

So you do own some metals!

Good for you.

For a second I thought you hated them.

As for sending gold to another country:

AFAIK, your bitcoin password can be hack if your computer got infect by malware. Malware can get into your computer when you're clicked some link that contains virus / malware. So My advice , just scan unknown link before try to access it !

You can't do anything without gold and silver.

No modern day computing = no Bitcoin

Gold and silver however survives without Bitcoin.

That is the end of that discussion.

At the moment that is what attracts me to metals over Bitcoin.

I spent roughly two years in the Bitcoin theater and it was interesting to say the least.

Learned a shit ton but the negatives outweighed the positives.

Wall St. 2.0 is not my style.

Plus there are seasons for everything.

Had to go but I don't take my eye off of it.

Your calculated guess is incorrect because I still have some Bitcoin.

My only suggestion here is that you don't take your eyes off the metals either.

Perhaps someday Bitcoin will grow up a bit and then I would come back to it.

You have made some solid points, because yes bitcoin is still a small child on it's way to progress along the world of currencies.
But don't forget bitcoin's curve to learn will take a lot less time then f.e. gold. Because paypal did a great job making online payments accepted by the masses.

Having your asset in potential (bitcoin) and security (metals like gold and silver) is a good way to earn on both assets.

It is really funny why there are some people who wants to say that bitcoin network can be hacked. Maybe they just want people to panic sell their bitcoins so that the price is going to be low. That is why they want to put fear in the people who uses bitcoin. But even though they want to say bad things to bitcoin still they can't prove it.

These are just a few examples of how Bitcoin's image gets hacked.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/in-the-bitcoin-era-ransomware-attacks-surge-1471616632
http://money.cnn.com/2016/08/03/technology/bitcoin-exchange-bitfinex-hacked/

http://www.defenseone.com/threats/2015/02/terrorism-finance-trackers-worry-isis-already-using-bitcoin/105345/

Well, they have been trying to "hack" Bitcoin ever since the media portrayed it to be this "anonymous" internet money that cannot be traced back when the first stories about the Silkroad hit the news. Yet here it still stands today.

But I agree with you that it would not be a wise investment strategy to put all his/her eggs in one basket and your suggestion to invest in gold is also a good and wise advice. That said it does not mean that we should stop accumulating Bitcoins. Maybe at these prices it would be bad but if it goes down to $400? Then I will not mind buying more.

This has nothing to do with "panic sell".

If you think I alone have the ability with this simple thread that has little exposure to cause panic sells then you are more delusional then how most replies in this thread have labeled me.

This is about a much larger picture and I hope you are paying attention.

But since you brought up price just take a look at the huge downward pulls that have taken place starting in August.

That is a sign of people seeing liquidation opportunities for what they are.

Nothing to do with this thread.

They say "follow the money".

I hear he hates sick patients.

You sir, are a retard.

Time and time again I hear Bitcoin advocates claiming that it is superior based on it's technology alone.

"It requires vision."

True, it really requires a lot of research and showing some articles saying that there were really instances that hacked are being made and bitcoin was involved but come'on bitcoin it itself can't be hack it does not require me any vision to see it because i can feel it  and sense you are seeing the future go back here in the future and tell me this thing again

For now i am still not experience that my account was hack unlike in perfect money that someone are trying to hack my account.. i hope in bitcoin our money are safe.. so that we can save our bitcoin for a long time..

"your account was hack" as you said sir it was your account and not bitcoin hehe so it is still not about bitcoin itself but it is only involved. Basically if a persons wallet was hacked it was not  a bitcoins fault. You really see a lot of lope holes on it. Like malware or a persons accidentally share its information to a what we call "hacker"

Probably everything can be hacked, or stolen. If we live in constant fear that is not a life, I know how many things can go wrong but that doesn't stop me to spend my time here.
OP said a good thing, don't put all your eggs in one basket. We can`t know will someone hack a blockchain, or will someone rob a bank. Bad things happen and sometimes some bad thing hit one of us. We can`t do much about it, we only can try to protect our self`s the best we can. Always have a exit strategy, or some back up plan, if you think something wrong will happen you can prepare for it.

well you are right, though bitcoins itself cannot be hacked, but people wallets can easily be hacked if they are online

Bitcoin itself can't be hacked because it's secured by two keys, one is public key and other is private key and we know only public key so top match the exact private key it would take much much more time and even wasting such a long time it would be useless if the wallet is found empty.

Actually wallet or bitcoin address also can't be hacked, if you don't share or store your private key and wallet's password/Mnemonic code online. Paper wallet generated over offline computer and printed out from offline printer can be considered as easiest way to store bitcoin in safe place without exposing any info to online. Anything stored over internet can be hacked similar goes for web wallets and any other private info stored over cloud servers/online.

Well i think Bitcoin itself can't be hacked , but your wallet could be stolen or hacked if you don't secure it as needed. That's why it's always better to avoid using the exchanger and online wallets services.

If you use a secured wallet and you own the private key i think there is no risk of getting hacked or stolen online, but if you re using online wallet there is always some risk the exchanger get hacked and you lose this way your bitcoins.

In bitcoin you are the only responsible for the security of your money (bitcoins). That being said if you believe that web online wallets are good you are a potential victim to become a hack. Desktop wallets are a bit more secure but not secure 101%.

If you want top of the line security you definitely to get a hardware wallet. I have done so am my investment was very small, about 0.035 btc for such hardware wallet but the job it is doing for me is priceless.
