Author Topic: Mining Rig - BIOS issue  (Read 723 times)

Hi,

I've build a new rig:
AsRock H97 Anniversary
6 x 380X Nitro
4GB Ram
Dual Core
60GB SSD
Risers - blue ribbon
PSU: 2xZM1000W Zalman

I've connected 2 Gpus (one at a time) and everything worked fine. But when i connect the 3rd GPU the computer freezes on bios with the following message:

Please install the PSU's 4-pin power cables to the 4-pin power connectors

I have the option to press DEL, F6, F12, TAB, F2 but the keyboard doesn't work (I've tried with 2 different keyboards also)

So, I've tried switching the risers between them, reset bios but nothing happened.

Please, give me some suggestions about how can I start the PC with 6 GPU's.

I only have Asrock H81 Pro BTC boards so this issue is new to me but I'd strongly recommend replacing the ribbon risers with powered USB risers.

My boards have two 4-pin molex connectors but I don't use any of them on any of my rigs and everything is running perfectly fine.


I'm not familiar with AMD cards so correct me if I'm wrong but after a quick search it seem that each 380X is supposed to have 2 x 6-pin aux power on the top which delivers 2 x 75 watts maximum but the card can pull a bit over 200 watts on their own.

So basically you expect the motherboard to feed an extra 300 watts (25 amps) through the motherboard which is a LOT.

If the numbers are correct not even one 4-pin molex will help you.


With powered risers all the power is going straight to the cards from the PSU and not through the motherboard so it's much safer and easier and usb risers also tend to be much more reliable.

300 watts at 110 power is 2.7 Amps, 300 watts at 220 power is 1.35 amps.


25 Amps is what most US washer and dryer units run on, I think you have a typo  Wink Wink

The highest voltage the motherboard receives is 12 volts which is what the cards also need. That is why I said 25 amps.

Solved. I've changed the motherboard with a H81 PRO BTC Cheesy

No. Again, the cards won't use 110V or 230V, they use 12V and if you want to pull 300W through the motherboard then you'd be pulling 25 watts - at 12V.

That is a lot for any motherboard to handle. This is why we have powered risers.

The 300W would normally supply by the PCIE power connectors. For the 6pin it can deal with 75W, for the 8pin, it can deal with 150W.
