Curious if anyone has a roundabout equation of how long it would take if one used an Antminer S3 starting today to get to 1 Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

There are several places you can look:

here is a good the best place to start.

Once you get the hashing rate you can go here and calculate it any day you like.

Now, if I give you a fish, it will only feed you for a day...

Screw it, I don't want you to starve
2,006.94 days... or more realistically never because every 2016 blocks the difficulty increases(most likely) while your hashing rate remains stagnant(most likely).  That being said, finding a block is a probabilistic endeavour so if you were to solo mine, there is a snowball's chance in hell that you might actually mine a block and get the 12.5 coins reward.

with free power

1% growth  you will have    .405 btc in 3 years
 2%   "              "  "     "      .288 btc  "    "  "  "
 3%   "            ...............   .216 btc  in 3 years

it would keep shrinking   and in any case above  you would not earn 1 btc

I wonder if Antminer S3 can be used to mine an altcoin instead. That will be better than just leaving the machine to rot somewhere in the attic.

It's still not going to make you much, if at all you get anything out of it. Unless you have absolutely free electricity, it's not worth mining anything with the S3 unless you're like me and just want a nice and quiet lottery miner. People have hit blocks solomining with S3's and S5s, so it's definitely possible. I assume you have a normal electricity cost, though, so in that case you won't ever get near 1 BTC in the next 4 years.

Some pools do multicoin mining with BTC mining, so you end up mining 5 or 6 coins at once.  The block reward possibility is also nice.

look at http://www.coinwarz.com/miningprofitability/sha-256/?hr=38.00&p=500.00&pc=0.1000&e=Coinbase You can put in your hash rate and power costs and see how much more the electricity costs a day that you can get for your altcoin mining.

UNIT and MZC are the least bad coins. If power is free or very low cost you can make a little money this way.

Merge mine BLC+PHO+ELT+XDQ+BBTC+UMO+LIT pool is open http://la1.blakecoin.com tips: 1MogRiTHpQZ7bkpq49cSVWADrTt7Jrghp
