HarambeCoin [HMBC]

Introducing the initial release of Harambecoin!!! Simple and classy, just like the great gorilla himself, harambecoin is a straighforward altcoin with some novel implementations of reward decay and difficulty targeting. This is an initial release and can be thought of a as a 'blank-slate' to be filled with all the harambe greatness that I know is sure to come. Looking for anyone who wants to get involved in any area of further development - this is a coin that is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. A small premine is reserved for anyone who would like to contribute to the code or help setting up other services (open to suggestions).

Here's some initial technical specs (will try to update if I missed anything):

Algo: Scrypt
Block Time: 90s
Difficulty Adjustment: DGW3 (slightly modified)
Total Coins: 20,818,000 HMBC over 12 years
-Exponential decay on an ~monthly basis
Premine: 100,000 HMBC reserved for bounties for any contributions to code/servies
RPC Port: 52398
P2P Port: 52399

**Initial Release version is v1.0.0.2**

Sorry for the google drive links, the harmbecoin.com website that will eventually host downloads is still under construction. Also, there's no osx client available at the moment - boost and el capitan were not playing well together. Hopefully I'll have this worked out soon. Also I'll do my best to at least get a p2pool setup running until an established pool comes around that wants to host harambecoin.

Fingers crossed for a smooth launch - I'll try to be active on #harambecoin for anyone interested in this project and/or having issues.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the responses and judging by how quick the hashrate is rising I think harambecoin is off to a good start  Grin.

So as far as people asking about the team: so far it's me and the mighty spirit of the great harambe. Hopefully a few people will get involved once this project picks up but I wouldn't underestimate harambe either...

olkah: exchange? relax bro, it hasn't even been 24 hours. Honestly if I somehow had this set up to instantly be able to get rid of them the day they came out, I would expect everyone to be at least slightly suspicious...

As to the understandable question of "what's the point?", let me do my best to give a quick answer. Since I started getting involved in cryptocurrency and subsequently watched as many others have come and gone, I feel for the people who do get interested there's an overwhelming desire to contribute and be a part of some of these projects. That said, bitcoin and some of the other major cryptocurrencies have groups of extremely talented developers already working and I think it makes it unfortunately a little bit too daunting for the average person who isn't as experienced in this to actually be able to contribute. I think there are a lot of really good ideas that ultimately get missed as a result so harambecoin is hopefully a project that could be an interesting incubator to try something new.

Also, I feel another thing holding cryptocurrency back from being more widely known and accepted/used is the simple fact that its too complicated for most people. I understand that it's going to be quite some time before something like bitcoin is considered mainstream, but it's amazing to me how many people I meet who have still never even heard of it. So for example something like Ethereum (et al.) which is an immense and impressive undertaking that's being worked on by some very smart people is helping on one end of the spectrum to improve the technology behind this type of code, I feel that there's just as much a need for projects like harambecoin to try to make cryptocurrency a bit more friendly and fun as opposed to more complicated.

tekyboy: Thanks for setting that up so fast, I haven't had a chance to test it but when I get some free time later I'll try mining on it for a little bit. That said I only have about 3Mhash of power so it might not be comparable for people pushing serious numbers.

On that note I may still try to run a p2pool node for now - seems relatively easy to configure except I may have to mess with the share targeting a little to avoid a high % of stale shares.

need more pools

Well this is definitely an understatement considering the network is at ~400Mhash already. I know that number might not be mind blowing by many standards but I'm amazed how quickly that rose in such a short period. So just maybe a nod to some of the pools out there, might want to give harambecoin a thought  Wink

Anyway, I spent a little time messing with p2pool and I have my fingers crossed that I set it up correctly, but it seems like everything is working at the moment. I know it's not the greatest solution, but I think it should at least be a decent short-term solution for people looking to mine some harambecoins. For anyone considering it that has the capability, running your own p2pool node right now would be extremely helpful so that the network can actually support some legitimate mining. You can find a modified version with code added for the harambecoin network here:

https://github.com/harambe-dev/p2pool

It's set up to (hopefully) work exactly how it would for litecoin - compile the scrypt module and then run: python run_p2pool.py --net harambecoin -a <harambecoin_address>
There are more detailed instructions that are included in the readme. Another thing to note is that the default worker port is 53000.

If you just are looking for a pool to use, you can point your miner at my node:

stratum+tcp://45.63.22.60:53000/

with your address as the username and anything as a password.

Enjoy!!!

I've been running 600Mhash most of the day... so far up to 4k HarambeCoin Smiley Bits out!

Silence Huh Anybody alive here?

Don't worry, Harambecoin is alive and well  Wink. Seriously, I do apologize for not being more active posting on the forum and promoting harambecoin in general, but that's because I've been focused on setting up things on the backend and making sure that the network is running/targeting okay which it looks like it has been as far as I can tell.

Also, I feel like p2pool hasn't really been working (or at least has been touch and go) - the repo I posted does work and I have successfully mined blocks with my gpu's pointed at the node I advertised, however, I started hitting issues yesterday where my miners either weren't connecting or weren't getting work properly - it's possible that it has something to do with the fact that the difficulty is so low still because of how new harambecoin is coupled with the fact that I probably set the share time too low for p2pool which might be causing shares having a way too low calculated difficulty to generate sufficient work.. Anyway, I'll probably attempt to update that although I think I may just put together a standard MPOS backed pool - looking forward I feel like as soon as people take notice and the hashrate spikes again solo mining for most of us becomes virtually impossible so I've been looking into that.

Over the next week or so I think you should see a lot more going on so for everyone running harambecoin, hang in there a little longer.

Okay so a couple pretty big updates that I want to announce. First of all the biggest issue was with mining/lack of pools. I had a p2pool node running with limited success so for now I no longer have it running. I do intend to update at least the subsidy function in my fork of the p2pool repo  if anyone is interested in running it down the road, can be found here: https://github.com/harambe-dev/p2pool

That aside, I have an actual pool setup for what I assume to be the vast majority of people that are trying to mine. The pool is www.harambepool.com and there's no need to sign up, just set the username of your miner to your harambecoin address and use any password. Vardiff port is 4444, or stratum+tcp://harambepool.com:4444
Let me know if anyone has any issues, although I've been testing it for a few days now with none to speak of. Also you can view the getting started page as there are a few additional ports configured for static difficulties.

Next, we have member bitsOut joining the team - he's been working on getting the harambecoin website up and running and will be handling social media and some of the announcements so expect to start seeing more on the communication front. For now, he'll be receiving 10k of the 100k HMBC Bounties - I'll post details of the Bounty Account address and details of the transaction once everything is done. Just a reminder that we're still looking for members to be a part of the team or even just the community so come and get involved anyway you can!

As a final smaller note, now that things are up and moving I finally have time to start reworking the code so expect more updates and a new version with an osx binary coming out in the near future.

why didn't you post a link to this thread in your pre-ann thread? why didn't you update your github? it looks like you don't really give a hoot about your project at all. i was following your pre-ann thread for about a month and i just found out a few days ago about the release of the coin. i kept my eyes on that thread and the github page. this is really a lost opportunity, your pretty much wasted the "harambecoin" with a poorly-made project

Ha! Listen, Harambe isn't scary, he was just misunderstood. He's was all about just hanging out in his enclosure, relaxing, maybe tossing around a kid if he hopped in, whatever. If you ask me, I would want to be that kid - That sounds like the ultimate zoo experience. I honestly can't remember one interesting event from one time I've been to a zoo in my life, that kid's gonna get to tell his first grade class in like a year about how he went to the zoo and kicked it like bro's with harambe.

Harambe was a gorilla of peace.

It's obvious the parents didn't want that kid, so Harambe stepped up to the plate and took him in like the gentle, peaceful creature that he was.  In my opinion, they should have shot the parents.  Why wasn't there at least a custody battle?

FYI, for now the two nodes YOU gave:

addnode=185.122.58.10
addnode=45.63.22.60

should work and are the only two that I can pretty much guarantee will be running for now since I control them. I plan to add another seed node server which I'll bundle into the next release that will hopefully be ready by the end of the weekend with a few other fixes I've been working on. @lootz - if those aren't working, let me know what general area you're located in as that may shed some light into whether or not other people will have issues, although for the  most part it seems like people are able to connect with those.

as for "you'd also like to be the kid shrek visited while he was in bed? do you even give a damn?" - what???

No logo?

Well I'm not an artist so maybe a harambe logo contest is in order... Although I did create an initial logo that's being used in the client now. Truthfully, I just completely forgot to post it.

Any bounty dev??? translation, social media campaign or signature campaign?

So yes and no - There's definitely bounties available but I'd like to reserve a good amount of it for hopefully some contributions to coding and developing/improving the network. For now, there are 100k HMBC designated to be used as bounties with 10k of that set aside already for the creation of the website and eventually social media accounts. For the time being, I'm open to suggestions for smaller bounties for things like a logo redesign. As far as translations are concerned, maybe someone can shed some light on what effort that actually consists of? I'd seriously like to know because I feel like google translate would get pretty close and take literally no effort at all.

As for a social media campaign, maybe down the road but not right now and honestly I have no idea what a signature campaign even is.

Cheesy - thank you for restoring my faith that some people may get some enjoyment out of this effort

G'day coiners,

I am a web dev, i am jumping on board with Harambecoin as i see the potential Harambecoin has AND the skilled/passionate dev who is running the backend.

Over the past few weeks i Have been working closely with ThaReal to produce a website for harambecoin. I have been given a solid bounty for my work so far and We need more skilled tech and marketing poeple on board if we want this to go to the moon.

think
  • instagram
  • facebook
  • twitter
  • any other forum or media site/app
  • and simply making more good harambe memes
We all want to see this happen so if you have any skills to contribute (even meme skills Wink) pm ThaReal or i and we can chat about how we will push harambe coin TO THE TOP!

A lot more Bountys available!

OP isn't even capable of posting the addnodes in the initial post so people can find them or post links here from his older threads, what more can we even expect? Total idiot, really. These things are easy to sniff. Is it true, thareal? are you a total idiot?

You're ruining the Harambe name with a weak coin and incompetence.

Bro you need to relax - seriously, you posted the only two dedicated nodes (one of them is hardcoded seednode) when it was asked and no one has mentioned it since so I don't think it's a huge issue. In the upcoming version there will be extra dnsseeds so hopefully it doesn't even come up again.

Been a while since I've given this an update so just want to mention a few things. First, a new release will be coming within a day or so - for the most part this will be just minor things: additional seednodes, checkpoints, a facelift of some of the images, a new logo, and all build issues fixed for OSX and newer (16.04) Ubuntu. That aside there are two larger decisions that may cause issues in some (hopefully) rare situations.

First, I realized that I made a mistake and for only the Linux binaries for v1.0.0.2 are compiled with libdb5.1 while windows uses 4.8. I thought about which version to use for this next build (and forward) since it should be the same for all platforms and seeing how the standard will soon be 6.x. That said, I can't think of any major benefit they provide and since after this set of changes I plan to forward merge up to the newer build system so that we can use the same static dependencies as bitcoin, it makes sense to just use 4.8 in all platforms moving forward. So basically anyone using the linux binary will have to create a new wallet and transfer their coins to a new address. I really don't think there are many linux users who don't just compile from source and since there aren't a huge amount of users at this point anyway, I don't think this should be that widespread.

Second, changing the multisig address prefix from '3' to 'M'. I know this was suggested for litecoin, but I don't think it was adopted yet because while it's not a 'hardfork', it definitely could be problematic for balances in multisig addresses. So here, the last I checked there are no multisig addresses being used so I feel like the best plan is to just update this now before they are. Let me know if anyone can see any problem with this, otherwise that's the last change I'm going to push before I prepare the next release.

Huh Bounty?

Bounty for what?? Yes, there is a fund for development but there's no set list so suggest some ideas of what you would like to contribute or at least a general area of work and we can try to figure out something.

Also, the previous 10k bounty for the ongoing web development and the new logo was paid in transaction 439aa8f9acd001f2962bb651460c52594d8a5f14155cf4622d4e121044accd11

Has there been any ongoing development with this alt in the last couple weeks?  I see a lot of potential here, but I'm curious if there is any progress toward getting HMBC on any exchanges.

RIP HarambeCoin.

Harambecoin is definitely not dead yet - I've been doing dev work but a lot has been somewhat "behind the scenes" so to speak, which is why it looks like right now the area that I could use the most help in is promoting/social media so if anyone wants to be a part of that, we can definitely work out a bounty.

Anyway here's a quick off the cuff list of what has been done since I've last posted:
- harambepool.com's web front-end was down for a few days after my VPS was restarted even though the pool and daemon were still working properly; this is fixed now.
- If anyone had tried to join the #harambecoin IRC channel, I assume someone had tried to take over the channel and set it to invite only. This is fixed so come on in - I'll try to check in as much as I can.
- The new release is ready and has been uploading to harambecoin.com. This is v1.0.0.3 and has the added checkpoints, DNS seeds, and the new Multisig prefix (which will become more relevant soon). Anyone looking to get harambecoin or using the release version, an upgrade is reccomended:

http://harambecoin.com/downloads/harambecoin-core-win-v1.0.0.3.zip

http://harambecoin.com/downloads/harambecoin-core-linux-v1.0.0.3.tar.gz

http://harambecoin.com/downloads/harambecoin-core-osx-v1.0.0.3.tar.gz

**NOTE: The osx version was experimental - I think there may have been an issue with bdb when I created the .dmg bundle. Since I don't have a Mac, if someone could give this a try and let me know one way or another whether it's working or not it would be appreciated.

There's a couple things I'm working on right now: rebuilding the test suite, rolling forward the code to the new build system, and also a multisig/blockchain insertion project I've been toying with so if anyone can help with giving me some input from a code perspective, there is definitely a lot to be done.

Also I mentioned the logo was updated but don't think I ever posted it on here:
