We've been working on this over at reddit

Quote
Reddit is Great! User Silfax coded an initial implementation of the tip jar concept

you can read about the idea and original discussion here http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1bi5n8/bitcoin_could_change_journalism_on_the_web_just/)

And the prototype app is here http://bitcointipper.appspot.com

There have been comments that the color scheme won't fit in with most sites, so if anyone has design skills we could use some alternative color schemes that blend in with different websites and won't stick out like a giant glowing sore thumb (no offense silfax, it's beautiful!)

What other ways could it be improved? Here was another suggestion

First step, if the number of tipsters is important, is to contact piuk >and ask him to add a new API feature to blockchain.info that would >return the count of received transactions to a particular address. It >should be a simple feature to add, and hopefully he is open to doing >so.

What else is it missing? Have we taken any major mis-steps or overlooked problems?
http://bitcointipper.appspot.com/

If you like this project, feel free to tip the developer from the app page -
I also accept tips (it was my idea, I've been leading the discussion) 1Ft9gGJZv3FFa8BsTnEVmAwhM6B1wrn7Lk

What do you guys think of a widget like this that was embeddable in forum posts?  If you write a big epic post that people find useful you can put the widget in and people who appreciate it can tip.

Or would that cheapen the forum experience?

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

This was the original post that spawned the current version, provided for context
Quote
Hey everybody, I'm a writer who has been covering bitcoin recently.

Writing on the internet is one of those 99%/1% things, the vast majority of writers do not get paid when their content is posted somewhere prominent. It is the exposure that is valuable, as it allows you to gain name recognition which you can then leverage to work your way up the food chain.

But mostly it means lots of people are writing as a passion rather than profession - Bitcoin can put all that on its head by turning every original article into something which generates "royalties" perpetually. At the beginning of each article would be a embeddable HTML widget which displayed the bitcoin address for that article, along with the total donated thus far along with the total number of donors.

In addition to providing tangible feedback to the journalist on which articles are more popular, it gives a writer with a back catalog of 300 articles some fair income potential.

Obviously not every story will generate oodles of donations, but the internet doesn't forget good content and things have a way of popping up over and over again. Instead of writing for a publisher, you'd only have to write for 100 backers choosing to donate .01BTC each.

You can get a better idea what I'm taking about with this mockup I made of the widget Ideally you'd just put in the public address for that article and it would pull and display the required data.

MOCKUP OF WIDGET http://imgur.com/2y5d5KD

Are there any developers interested in taking this on? I'm happy to talk details, this could be a major win for all involved parties.

Hey there,
I spoke with the developer and he came up with this mockup to see if that fit your needs
http://imgur.com/l1jsu05
obviously the QR is a rollover effect, not always there.

He said he would code it in exchange for a tip - I don't know what that amount is, probably not much, do what you think is right.  You can tip him on the widget creation thread (I'm 0.02 of what's already there)
http://bitcointipper.appspot.com/

Let me know if you want any changes made to the mockup before it is implemented.

Thanks!

that works!

Look just remember,  that image can't preload or anything (I need to keep the entire file size of that index page as tiny as possible).

So as long as that loads -- ONLY ON CLICK --  I'll do it!!

The problem is that little site is on track for 50,000 visitors a day...   (yesterday 37,000 visitors) and it's already under some forms of strain when people wake up to Bitcoins at 140 bucks...    and to boot since they refresh it so much on their mobile I don't want them greeted with an bandwith overage charge on their mobile,  I'm trying to keep the bandwidth costs down as much as possible for them.
