I bet its old stock that's been re-lazed with a new label on each chip if it indeed is a different part number;  OR they thought about it in advance, and has a run of chips for the units they were going to be using in-house to be able to easily sell them after they are done with em.


I wouldn't touch those with a 30 foot pole unless BTC was over ~50K.....  and even then I would only accept one for free.... maybe.


But, on-topic;  I am excited to see what this year brings for the new products.   Last year seemed to go by silently; as you were full-ham on production of current devices.
I hope to see this thread relatively active for this year =)   I guess it all relies on having a chip supplier come through at this point, correct?

Yes, thank you for quoting something from a year and a half ago.

I do still have Bitfury 16nm samples, but last time I asked a bulk order of chips was about 9 months lead time so I started looking at alternatives. I have worked out an arrangement with someone who already had some solid R&D on a different chip to share his knowledge in exchange for help with cgminer integration (and a cut of sales), which put me about two months ahead on a new design.

I'm also talking to, or trying to talk to, a couple of those "new guys" who show up out of nowhere and whose chips may or may not exist now or sometime in the future. I know that's pretty vague and that's sorta deliberate because I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. Never promise more than you can deliver, right?

Once I have new-chip stuff ready, we'll be retiring the 2Pac in favor of a new-chip stickminer. The Terminus R808 pod will probably still be around for a while but I also intend on making a new-chip pod. It'll be more capable but it'll also be more expensive, hence why I'd keep the R808 around as a cheaper entry-level option. The new pod miner would be form-factor-compatible, all the jacks and mounting holes in the same place so a case for one would work for the other.
The new pod, and ideally the new stick as well, would have software-controlled adjustable voltage.

By now the assembly line is pretty well laid out and I don't have to do nearly as much myself, which means R&D on new stuff gets done more efficiently. That's good news.

Oh yeah and I've got a bit of a concept change for my powered USB hub project that should take out some of the headaches, so I should start prototyping on that soon. Who knows, maybe it'll be available to ship with the new 16nm stickminers.

Also for anyone who hadn't already noticed, I do have an actual salesperson now to handle customer communication so small sales are re-opened on 2Pacs, and she's making a list of people interested in pod miners and 2Pac seconds for when those are in stock. We've figured out a mutually beneficial way of helping her both more directly and more substantially.

Will there be separate kits for the s1 vs s3 vs s5 in that they'll have different final hash rates, or will it be a uniform board that can be swapped out of any device?  I'll keep my eyes peeled for some cheap miners but would like to plan on what the eventual finished product might could be...😊

Between S1, S3 and S5 chassis I have probably 150-180 miner cores laying around.

They're mechanically compatible. All the heatsinks are the same size with the same screw positions. So a board for one will work on all 3. That's the whole point, and a question I've been answering for roughly 3 years.

FWIW I picked up an S3+ miner on Amazon for about $250. Even though the power/hash rate isn't that good ~.7watts/Ghs it runs well and very quiet relative to the newer miners.

Waiting for the upgrade boards too. :-)

That's a horrible price to pay for an S3. They used to sell for $70 or less on pretty much every site, and even now you can get a better deal for them on eBay. First search I looked for on eBay was a $180-190 S3 with shipping factored in. Not a great price but still lower than your $250.

It's still a quiet miner though, enjoy!

Yeah but if he bought it more than a month or so ago, bitcoins were trading for roughly twice the current value and all miner prices were stupid.

But yeah that's still a bad price. I wouldn't have bought an S5 for that.

On that note, miner prices have come back down to Earth recently overall though there are still some holdouts on ebay who think $3k is a reasonable asking price for something like an Avalon 741... I sure hope people out there are not falling for it much but who knows.

It's certainly not a bad time to upgrade for all of us who buy second-hand miners and have the $$$ to do so.
