SONM project is much better than Golem...
Dev team release every promise on time, with livenet it will be possible to run every application & rent every PC components... I sold all of my GNT for SONM!

SONM has 62 million USD total marketcap and GOLEM has 234 million USD total marketcap. Golem is nearly 4 times higher totalmarketcap than SONM at the moment.

Marketcap means nothing, look at EOS. Sonm is currently heavily undervalued because golem has first mover advantage. Then again, Sonm actually has a live mainnet, golem has not.

Can I mine cryptocurrencies with Golem? Or would it be far more efficient and cost effective to simply convert Golem (GNT) into the desired currency on an exchange.

You can with sonm, or to be more precise, it does that for you, whether you're in the business of mining or not. When you sell your computer power, sonm determines what's the most profitable option, either it mines cryptocurrency or it performs tasks. Right now the mainnet isn't operational for non crypto features, so the mining option will be the most profitable

If you consider what Golem is actually doing and for how long the devs have been working on it (mind you, blockchain etc. is still 'relatively' new), then it is so good to see it working. There are Always flaws in software programs like these but hey, the team is active, there is a constant stream of updates, the knowledge from the engineers at Golem HQ is there, the attention is there.

Decentralization adds to resilience, more evolved technologies (at least on the golem side), fair and p2p computing power markets, transparent, and enables people to earn revenue by leasing useless computing power. The AWS / Azure examples can be very good but the money goes to Amazon or Microsoft. The money goes to the user.

Golem’s mid-term goals — in detail

Building Golem is an incredibly rewarding experience, we learn new things every day, but at the same time, constructing something that has never been done before is unpredictable and tricky.

Launching Brass Beta into mainnet, for instance, was not envisioned in our first plan. But we understood that in order to progress, we needed to go out of our comfort zone — that is, obviously, testnet and the lab environment, and see how Golem behaves in the wilderness of mainnet.

Now that we accomplished this, that we introduced 2 major updates after that first Brass Beta mainnet launch and a couple of patches, we sat down with our ever-growing team and planned differently. We are not reinventing the wheel but dismantling it and tracking the progress of each piece, while we never stop working and progressing, sticking to our core values and premises.

Golem and Ethereum are evolving, new challenges and solutions pop up every single day. Consequently, we decided to be realistic and honest, and this “roadmap revamp” in Kanban format is aimed to communicate our mid-term goals better. Our whitepaper and original roadmap are not replaced. Goals are planned differently and in a more mindful manner.

I don't see activity neither by supporters who returns only at rising up times nor by the team though twitter is being used on regular basis.
