Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Is exchanger wallets safe?

As long as you don't hold your own private keys, literally it's not safe when storing coins in third party exchangers especially web wallets.

But it doesn't mean they are fraud and not recommended for storage. There's just chances they are. As you know even a reputable exchange can turned changed into dark side anytime.

I don't think exchanger wallets should be considered safer than web wallets or better to use desktop wallets like electrum. I used to save only altcoins in poloniex and bittrex and for bitcoin i think electrum is best place but better you understand all the features of electrum before you start using them.

Bitcoin is all about being your own bank so It's better to control  your private keys (and use a Desktop/paper/hardware wallets , depends on your needs).
However , some exchange could be considered as safe since some of them (Poloniex) for example , put most of their funds in Cold storage so even If they get hacked , nothing much will happen to users (but no one wants to take that risk). There is always a risk of inside jobs though.

I think its more safe to bring your bitcoins into electrum than online wallet save your private keys and passwords so that if you forgot you have some backup to recover it again.. honestly remember bitfinex better to keep safe always your funds than stay it to exchange site its risky for me..

I have never had any problems with exchange wallets, but i like to have private keys for my addresses. You don't own addresses in exchange platforms, they are only connected to your account.

I never had any problem with exchange "wallets'', but many experienced bitcoin enthusiasts say that it's not recommended to use exchange balances as wallet, because it doesn't have the same security of our wallets and it's more exposed to hackers attack or a "scam exchange". We don't know what can happen and our wallet service is more trustful than any exchange (at least the most trustful wallets like Blockchain.info).

But if you money in stored on the internet it's taking some risk anyway. If you want less risk, you need to keep your coins stored on a downloaded wallet in a computer without internet connection preferentially.

No one can guarantee that exchange won't be hacked (and he know such stories from past). I don't recommend to use exchange as primary wallet. On exchanges keep amount of coins which you need for trading. As primary wallet it's better to use wallet where you have access of private keys, for example blockchain.info.

Any web wallet or exchange can be hacked, so it's not 100%
Look the past and you will se cases like that.

Just hold your bitcoins in your wallet... Exchange isn't wallet!

we can't say clearly that it is safe because we know that exchange sites are not having Risk of money they only provide a way of exchange between all coins .
so exchange wallet are safe but the recent exampl of poloniex may be cause some fear in our mind.

No problems with exchange wallets, yet.(haven't encountered any) Doesn't mean there couldn't be one in the future. You're basically giving them your coins to keep, they give you 'credit' and promises to exchange it to bitcoin when/if you want to withdraw. Much like banks, except without all the other security and insurance.
Exchange could be hacked, they either run or forcefully deduct a percent of your funds then promise to pay in future, control how much and when you can withdraw.
Etcetera etcetera.

Anyway, it's ok to use for small amounts only and for brief periods of time. You should store majority of your coins on a desktop wallet.

in my opinion there is no risk of store you btc at exchange site .
because my some friends are using exchange wallet from long time and faced no problem .
so it is safe .
but if any ddos attacks take place at these exchange sites than there is risk of btc to loss .

For me the wallets of exchanges are the same as online web wallets so you will have to keep in mind the same precautions which you keep in mind for web wallets. I also use some exchange wallets for some smallest amount for any trade but I do not trust on new unknown exchanges which will not have much trus from the community.

Not at all, mostly the exchanges' wallets are not safe because they do not provide you the provide key to be able to do "everything".

Earlier I had funds mostly on all exchanges you mentioned and the amount wasn't low but I risked because I was highly active on trading, but one time I decided to withdraw because It's not safe and it's safer on my own (hardware) wallet.

Sometimes we are forced to keep our Bitcoin or other altcoins in exchanges wallet to avoid paying too much money as fees, it isn't logical to send Bitcoin to exchange wallet in every time we want to trade, I am worried because some exchanges have been hacked before, thus it is risky to keep money there but as I said before we are forced to do that.

All exchangers have their safety policies and.measures to protect their clients but I wouldn't suggest that you keep larger amount of coins in the exchanger wallets. They are often victims of different hackers so your funds might be in danger.

Besides xapo, coinbase and blockchain, I also use wallet from exchanger like from yobit, poloniex and bittrex. Sometimes I can't online for longtime because my career is sailor.

Is exchanger wallets safe?
I trust some of exchanger site's like blockchain and off course our based wallet that really based on my country and so far so good i don't see any problem or encounter any problem using it and it's really fast and good services reponse . And So far i don't encounter any problem on that webste you mentioned for me it's really not safe if you are going to hold your coins into third party exchanger it's more dangerous.

I trust only sites which allow you to export your private keys and are preferably open source project - only blockchain.info meets both criteria but it is not an exchange.
Other than than you should treat wallet linked to an exchange with grain of salt. As history shows - exchanges are primary target for hackers.

Wallet from an exchange it is never safe. They are used for convenience purposes and if you do trading a lot there, however they are far from secure. I recommend you using a desktop or hardware wallet instead.

If you are an avid trader and cannot do without trading then use 2 wallets, 1 the one of the exchange where you trade and another desktop wallet like Electrum for example.

Once you finish your trading session withdraw your coins to the electrum wallet and keep only the amount for trading in the exchange. This can minimize your risks quite a lot.

I don't think you can consider any exchange to be completely safe. I have used coinbase, yobit, poloniex, and btc-e with no problem. But I used cryptsy and they stole my money. It's hard to know if they are trustworthy.

I will not recommend exchange wallet for long term saving of your bitcoins but if you want to trade with them then you can keep your bitcoins in that wallets and when you feel that you have some extra bitcoins on that wallets then try to withdraw them to your desktop wallet.

I only trust some exchange site's but most off all i only truely trust 1 bitcoin wallet website that based on my country and it is very safe to let your bitcoin to save there and hold not like other websites that if the website got hacked then they can't really back the funds but in my wallet there are policy that i think there going back your amount.

With my experience I had been storing my bitcoins to my exchanger and I haven't any issues with them. And that is because I'm making them as my personal bank.

But still I know the risk that I can get when something happened that's why I am just trusting them that they will not collapsed.

It is just like store your bitcoins at your own risk with exchange sites.

people already explained to you about risks of using online web wallets as your storage especially in exchanges which can go down.

but from what i read, it seems like you are not using your bitcoins for long periods of time, in that case you should use a cold storage like paper wallet instead. you keep it in a safe place and only receive payments in.

Weak hands have been complaining about missing out ever since bitcoin was $1 and never buy the dip.

Never use any exchanger wallet to store your coins as anytime these sites can be hacked (as they are vulnerable to attacks) and you can lose all your coins. I wouldn't say that online wallets are safe but I prefer them compared to exchange website wallets due to any bad incidents in the past. I use unocoin but don't save my money there for more than a day.

Paper wallets too cannot be secure as when people tend to forget their password and lose their private keys, they can lose those wallets too. Physical wallets can be the best option but only if you have a good amount of bitcoins to store.

Yes, you should just trust only few that have good reputation and high trust score like coinbase, blockchain and blockio and so on but any new or untrusted one shoud never be used for storing your bitcoin else you may loose over the night.

But, I like to suggest here do not trust anyone. That is the reason we are having bitcoin. Trusting others for bitcoin storage, must be a breach of bitcoin's core concept of trustless system.
Having very low amount in exchange or in web wallet is always highly recommended. Standalone desktop wallets are best always.

Would be nice to have a physical wallet, but I think it doesn't exist yet. It would be the safest method to store our BTCs. On virtual world there are threats everywhere and everytime, and I believe some people stay inhibited to use large amounts of BTCs because of it.

I only use exchanger's wallet to store altcoins which i get from avatar campaigns, etc. I find it easier to use a wallet of new currency instead of installing the same on my pc. So far i have no problem with using yobit's wallet.

Besides xapo, coinbase and blockchain, I also use wallet from exchanger like from yobit, poloniex and bittrex. Sometimes I can't online for longtime because my career is sailor.

Is exchanger wallets safe?
As  other  members said  here as  long  you  dont have access  on your  private keys  your  bitcoins  is   not really safe being  left behind on  exchange wallets because  the risk  of  lossing  it  is  there and you heard about  exchange  being hacked then  you cant  do  nothing  with  it  if it happens and   your  bitcoin is totally lost. Better to transfer  it into a hardware wallet   if you are   a sailor  because its somehow  safe  rather than  keeping it on exchange wallets.

Depending on how you are going to trust an exchangers security then just save there at your own risk. Because out of the bitfinex incident, for sure many are doubtful on this.

But with me, I am using and storing my bitcoins with a local exchanger, because offline wallets are much more risky for me.

Because here in my place a lot of robbers will put interest to the things that they just see new in their eyes, even my relatives.

It might seem convenient to just keep your money on an exchange wallet but seriously there are a lot of exchanges that claim that they got hacked and actually plan to do a runner sometime.

Just hold your bitcoin in a private key that you control... It's not that difficult.

Wow, even your relatives?

Many people don't trust the exchange wallets because in the past some of those exchanges closed or were hacked and traders, investors lost their money. The exchange owners aren't very very trusted and unexpected things happen. So better to don't risk our money on it using an exchange as wallet.

There is other alternative if he is a sailor and he can bring even smart phone he can use electrum apps it is safe than online or exchange site.. just make sure that you are always backuping private keys and seeds for future purposes if you phone is gone you can be still install your wallet to other wallet to recover your bitcoins..

it all comes down to how you are going to use those coins.

for many users around here, their earnings will go to a wallet and stay there for a long time and acts as a long term investment for instance. in this case a paper wallet or a cold storage in general is the solution.

but many others want to use their earnings, for example they trade daily with that amount or some gamble with it and waste it. for these cases you should go for a more hands on wallet like a mobile wallet or at least a web wallet but never an exchange for keeping coins.

They are the same, but you shouldn't trust any of them, even if we agree that big sites like poloniex or coinbase are honest and their owners don't intend to run away with the funds the danger of getting hacked is always there.
Any hard/paper/desktop wallet is safer than them, all you need to do is to follow some basic rules and keep your private keys well hidden.

Yes that's true, because I have tested them for so many times that I am able to leave my physical wallet to our table, not knowing that it is just my bait.

After a couple of minutes, my physical wallet gone when some of my relatives came into our house and asking us if we have food.

So after giving them food, they took my wallet also.

the danger of getting hacked is always there.
This must be the biggest problem with all online providers. We need to have the practice of withdrawing from time to time all unused funds from any online wallet/exchange. We must keep our ball within our court else regretting will be inevitable. People are preferring to use bitcoin in the way of how Paypal is doing, but not secure and will fade away the real purpose of adopting bitcoins.

To be honest, there is no online wallet that is 100% safe. Coinbase, Xapo or blockchain always can be hacked.. sorry, but this is the true.. Every few month we can hear about that next exchange was hacked. Actually, there is not many exchanges that haven't been hacked yet..

So the only safe place for you coins is your cold wallet!

Any kind of wallet has some risk, if it's on virtual world it's under risk... Doesn't matter if it's stored online, on desktop, etc...

The best way to have full safe would be have physical wallet in own our hands.

But physical wallet safety would depend only of me. On virtual world there are many things and persons involved (hackers, computer durability, scammers...)

I can let it quietly on my drawer, on a safe box without worries. But I agree with you, none of the storage methods are 100% safe. Physical wallet can be 99%.  Smiley

It does not look like Bitfinex ran away with people's money, they are in the middle of an FBI lawsuit now.

The big problems from wallet developer is secure. I think too many hacker will find the weakness of secure system from wallet developer. For best save our bitcoin I never recommended to use online wallet or exchanger wallet. Save your bitcoin in the best wallet and this is offline wallet. Use online wallet or exchanger wallet for only transactions regulary.

that's the safer way to assure your self that your btc is completely secure just let your transaction be done everytime you made the trade or if you need to exchange your btc to your local money same thing with me regarding to exchange wallet any moment hackers can get into it and our btc will be robbed.

that's the safer way to assure your self that your btc is completely secure just let your transaction be done everytime you made the trade or if you need to exchange your btc to your local money same thing with me regarding to exchange wallet any moment hackers can get into it and our btc will be robbed.
For me and other users, bitcoin is primary asset after legal money that issued from government central bank. The best to make bitcoin safe is give the full protect from hacker. The best recommendations for storing bitcoin is save to offline wallet. If you always use online wallet, we must activate 2FA.

Its not super safe and because of that you should also not store a large amount on it due to the fact its risky, you cannot even trust the exchange website these days so I think that is already saying enough.

Yes, exchanger wallets is unsafe for save our bitcoin for long time. The best way for save our bitcoin is save in more than 2 wallets, we can use offline, online and android wallets. Use exchanger wallet for trading only and never save for long time.

If  you are sailor and  dont have  too much time to go  online then  its  better to  store  up your  bitcoin  on  a hardware wallet and  bring  it  wherever you are   rather than  putting  and  leaving  it  on an  exchange wallet because  the  risk of  lossing  it  is  still there. As we all know  that exchanges  could  possibly be hacked   without  our  awareness which our bitcoins  is at risk for sure.

Wondering what is the point of using some shady wallet while you have blockchain.info?
Yes everything has its pros and cons, but they are not likely to steal your btc or be ghosted one day.

And there are only few trustworthy exchanges out there.

Warning! My negative trust is a result of unfair competitor's action! I received my reputation not for scamming anyone but for being an account seller - check it yourself!

Besides xapo, coinbase and blockchain, I also use wallet from exchanger like from yobit, poloniex and bittrex. Sometimes I can't online for longtime because my career is sailor.

Is exchanger wallets safe?
No the exchange is not safe to keep your coin. like other online wallet there is a chance that it will close and being hacked if it happens it will be big lost on your side. Remember what happen to bitfinex.

I recently had problems with blockchain.info. In my opinion the most friendly online wallet/exchange is Coinbase. They have a very simple interface, and from what I know very good security.

I think all online wallet is very risk to save bitcoin moreover big balance. We must learn about the news that happen with exchanger that hacked and all balance from users are loss. You can't online for longtime, I recommend to save to offline wallet like electrum.

Yes all of the exchangers are very risky and it depends on how their security are being built. But if you are wise enough and will upon for the past hacking incidents then you may change your belief that wallet exchangers are not even safe enough. Its fine if you will just save some of it that you can afford to lose whatever will happen. But still too good to be safe because every bit counts.

What's the point of keeping your coins in an exchanger anyways? Just get a desktop client and you'd be good. Or just use blockchain.info if you are using bitcoin or use any of its altcoin counterparts like dogechain.info. At least you have control over your own private keys.

I just don't get why people would risk such little convenience to losing their entire funds... I really don't.

You can use exchanger wallet for trading purposes only. But putting all your BTC in exchange is not really safe. I donot say it will be hacked but there a chance it will. so need to be careful with your money . I also have btc in exchange i use it for trading to buy other coin.

The point is you are trusting them and their reputation has been built for a lot of times and they have strong security. For sure there are some bitcoin people who are just letting their bitcoins sleep with an exchanger wallet. Yes, blockchain is a good way to store your bitcoins online just simply choose it rather than with exchange sites. Maybe they are lazy enough and doesn't have ample time to transfer their funds.

Its not very safe but is doable if you are not storing large amounts on it, exchange wallets are not safe but for a small time period it can be okay and it would not be bad.
In the most cases you should just transfer it as fast as possible.

For sure many of us are a bit cautious already for the past incidents with some 'trusted' exchange sites that has been hacked.

We may not know if they are really hacked or some other inside job happened. But still, if you want to trust exchange sites.

Trust at your own risk as many are saying here and we all warned them that it is a very risky thing to do.
